The Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Black) is an action-hungry camera that's rugged enough to take just about anything you want to throw at it – extreme cold (temperatures down to 14 °F), large bodies of water, and even accidental drops up to 5.0' (1.5 m). Featuring a 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm 35mm equivalent), the AW100 employs a 16 MP CMOS sensor to capture beautiful images underwater, on the ski slopes, or wherever else you'd like to punish this rugged little model.
The AW100 is underwater-rated down to 33' (10 m), so you'll be able to take it sailing, snorkeling, or even scuba-diving. Meanwhile, you'll know exactly where you are and where you're headed, thanks to the AW100's built-in GPS and electronic compass functions. If that's not enough to get your bearings, simply access the built-in map on the easy-to-read 3" LCD screen.
These functions can help tell the story of the excursion that you cataloged via high-res photos and Full HD 1080p video. Even when you're not recording, the camera's GPS can log your location and record your route. This can also be displayed on the LCD of the AW100. Likewise, the electronic compass enables the recording of the camera's orientation.
The AW100 is designed to be easy to operate with one hand while the rest of your body might be otherwise occupied. HD video recording can be triggered by the press of a single button, and the camera's innovative Action Control feature allows you to set select camera functions without even pressing a button – execution is gestural. This will let you focus on the other task at hand, even if it's just keeping your gloves on.

My first point and shoot camera. I have only owned Nikon SLR and DSLR's and never purchased a p&s for several reasons. They seem to be chipping away at the shutter lag, although it's still apparent in low light but on par or better than other p&s. The rugged rating is awesome as it usually gets shoved in a wet pocket or falls out of my hands (and main reason for purchase). I am familiar with Nikon software and menus, all work well. I wish Nikon would create a universal charger as now my bag has 3 different ones. I have not used, nor will ever use GPS or any other feature that eats battery power. Hard to comment on picture quality, it is acceptable for my use and probably as good as can be with a waterproof lens.

I was very excited about this camera, as I needed a solid small camera to use on climbing trips, on the water etc. without worrying it would break. In that respect, it is definitely successful so far, although I did not go snorkeling or really under water with it.
Quality-wise though, I can't help being a tad disappointed. The edges and especially corners of the image are extremely soft - much more so than acceptable from a camera of any size. In fact, I think I get pictures with less sharpness from this than from cameras 5 years old... I know this is not for the highest quality photography, it's not meant to replace my SLR, but I would have expected at least decent compact camera quality.
The interface is a bit weird. The easy-auto gizmo may work, but I'm having a hard time trusting it. That my just be resistance to change on my part...
Overall I'm not saying it's a bad camera, it is certainly a reasonable choice for a solid camera (something oddly fun about washing your camera in the sink after a day shooting...), but it doesn't live up to my expectations.

Nikon has done it again!! I bought this camera for a white water rafting trip and I love it. I love that it is waterproof and shatterproof. The only thing I don't like, is the battery life isn't that great, I'm guessing because of the GPS. The camera has great scene settings including panorama. And I love that I can now take pictures in the rain. Great overall buy! Great quality pics!

This is my third bad experience with Nikon products. First was D7000 after 2 or 3 months I sent it to the repair center, then after a while, another episode when I was sent camera and lens to Nikon and it appeared problem with lens. Now this one AW100 I bought it particular for my cruise vacation to take a pictures on the beach, in wet forest spots etc. NO SCUBA not even snorkeling. After some shots on the beach and in the water camera stop working screen became dark even though power switch remain in operation. Nikon came up with a good camera locking mechanism you basically cannot improper close the camera or accidentally open it under water that part is very good but seems like quality control of the electronic components is not. So as to pictures and video quality that I can judge from those few pictures and videos that I took, I would say looks as many other pictures from shoot and point cameras of mine I have Canon point and shoot and Sony NX 5 (my D7000 replacement) last one is more superior camera in all aspects. Anyway if you need waterproof point and shoot I would suggest to go along with more reputable in this aspect brands (Nikon AW 100 is first in Nikon product line which is waterproof)like Panasonic,Olympus, Canon, those brands being for a while in business of making pictures under water so you will be better off and probability of ruin your vacation photography and video will be far far less if you NOT choose Nikon AW100. I am NOT a Nikon brand basher just telling everybody my experience.Thank!

The Nikon Coolpix AW100 shows excellent high speed performance with great quality both in and out of the water. With a excellent MP sensor and incredible HD video, this camera was built for high performance. It's excellent pocket-sized structure as led it to replace my bulky SLR cameras on occasion. This camera works excellent in all weather and performs well even after being dropped. Although the zoom isn't high and there is no lens shutter, these are just minor flaws in an otherwise great camera. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a good waterproof model with high quality but wants to stick within the lower price range.

The coolpix aw100 camera is a practice one. Lightweight, small, simple to operate, is a good cost-effective. Do not expect miracles from it: your lens, despite having a good wide angle, is small and does not allow "abuse". But it works well about focus and lighting changing, main making full hd movies. And you can view photos and movies on TV with excellent image quality with HDMI connection. Shooting resources are sometimes insufficient, sometimes a bit confusing, but overall they are efficient and produce good results. Compass and GPS really work and help a lot who need to know details about picture location when reviewing it. The battery has a good life and recharge is fast. Furthermore, it comes with an adapter for filters, which can greatly help in the images final results. The 40.5mm filter is not so easy to find but you can buy a adapter ring (40.5 to 52mm, for exemple) and have a lot of options easily. Coolpíx aw100 wins many points for being water, falls and cold resistant, making it an excellent device for anyone who travels or enjoy outdoor shooting.

I bought this camera for use on fishing and dive trips as a boat camera to abuse and so far I am very happy. I would recommend a floating camera strap since it sinks fast. The pictures and video are clear, the underwater mode is okay but so far I have only used it in 10 ft on a reef and auto mode worked just fine on colors. The GPS is a fun feature but the signal is slow to pick up if its been off for more then 15 minutes, definately cool though to look at a map of everywere you took pictures on an adventure.

I've had the misfortune of leaving my camera in the car overnight in freezing temperatures. I remember it's there just when I get one of those once in a lifetime shots, and behold...it's too cold to function properly. The AW-100 is perfect for those times. I've gotten some great shots after leaving this in the car for days. Just turned it on and got the shot. Wasn't sluggish, did what it was suppose to do. You don't get the quality of a dedicated digital SLR, but for the buck...you get plenty of bang.

Bought this camera to replace my olympus Tough 8010, that also is a great all around camera but the battery life is dismal, so I went with the AW100 and could not be happier....great shots above the water line and below. The battery lasts and lasts, I take mine when I kayak offshore fishing for stripers and blues. I take it into the surf when the grand children are down (awesome shots) and I dont really worry about the sand or salt. Overall I like this camera, great choice.
