The Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange) is an action-hungry camera that's rugged enough to take just about anything you want to throw at it – extreme cold (temperatures down to 14 °F), large bodies of water, and even accidental drops up to 5.0' (1.5 m). Featuring a 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm 35mm equivalent), the AW100 employs a 16 MP CMOS sensor to capture beautiful images underwater, on the ski slopes, or wherever else you'd like to punish this rugged little model.
The AW100 is underwater-rated down to 33' (10 m), so you'll be able to take it sailing, snorkeling, or even scuba-diving. Meanwhile, you'll know exactly where you are and where you're headed, thanks to the AW100's built-in GPS and electronic compass functions. If that's not enough to get your bearings, simply access the built-in map on the easy-to-read 3" LCD screen.
These functions can help tell the story of the excursion that you cataloged via high-res photos and Full HD 1080p video. Even when you're not recording, the camera's GPS can log your location and record your route. This can also be displayed on the LCD of the AW100. Likewise, the electronic compass enables the recording of the camera's orientation.
The AW100 is designed to be easy to operate with one hand while the rest of your body might be otherwise occupied. HD video recording can be triggered by the press of a single button, and the camera's innovative Action Control feature allows you to set select camera functions without even pressing a button – execution is gestural. This will let you focus on the other task at hand, even if it's just keeping your gloves on.

We use this product on our manatee snorkeling tours 5 to 6 days a week, you can see our photos if you go to www.facebook.com/fun2dive We use the camera about 5 hours a day and I am a big Nikon fan and when I found out that the AW100 camera was coming out I had to have one. This is the first underwater camera after the Nikonos RS and the Nikonos 5 series, and I owned both series, so I was hoping this would work out well. Before the Nikon AW100, we used the Olympus TG-610 and TG-810 which did an OK job and I also tried the Go-Pro, and was really disappointed with the underwater results. But the new Nikon AW-100 Nikon has a faster shuttler speed, fast response time, easy to use buttons, good battery life and a quality print. We do not use the videos portion, so I can not comment on that part. Nor do we use the GPS feature or compass... but this is part of the camera which is OK if I was traveling, but still I do not think I would use it. I ran some prints through our Epson 10500 up to 16 x 20 and did very well for a little camera. Over all it is a nice camera, priced well, and love the locking door.

This is a point & shoot camera. Plain & simple. Don't look for too much manual control (except for exposure compensation) because it doesn't have much. I bought this because I wanted a rugged camera that I can take photos/videos on shallow waters and my hikes out in the backcountry.
Image quality is okay and is no where near DSLR quality in my opinion. I recently took some photos in high contrast situations where I would shoot indoors and there would be a bright light source in the background (ie window light, bright lamp) and the housing in front of the lens would create horrible flare and hazing. Outdoors, in even lighting it would take good pictures though. The greatest feature about the AW100 is the ability to attach filters. I don't know of any other P&S that can do this. I have a 40.5-49mm step up ring & I can use my graduated ND & polarizing filter. Under ideal lighting conditions I think this camera can take great photos. However, high contrast scenes can be a challenge. I haven't dabbled to much in the pre-programmed scene modes but I'll update when I get a chance. If you zoom in and position your subject the right way, you can get decent bokeh in the background (not great but okay). I do plan on using this camera as my main point & shoot and probably use it in tandem with my iPhone 4 for casual travel/family photos. Too bad there's no selection for color saturation. It may be buried under the pre-set settings but the default colors can use a bit of a boost. It also seems that there is a slight over exposure on my photos but I haven't pinned it down if it's a particular setting on the camera.
I also wanted this camera for the 1080p video function. Unfortunately, it doesn't have too much control over the video. I wished Nikon could have a least added a AE/AF lock on video mode. I don't like the stair stepping exposure adjustments. Autofocus on video seems kind of slow too especially when zooming in & out of your subjects. You can also hear the buttons being pushed when zooming so be prepared to hear clicking on your videos if you zoom. The zoom is one set speed so you can't zoom in/out slowly. I do like the 60 fps for slow motion. I even slowed the video footage down and extra 50% in Final Cut Express and got some great slo-mo.
Navigation is pretty easy and there's really not much options that would get you lost in the menus. Response and lag times are decent and is on par with other point & shoot cameras.
Even though it's a point & shoot camera, I believe it's capable of great photos IF you take you time and really concentrate on composition and get the right setting before hand. If you like to shoot auto everything you should be able to get decent images out of it.
If you need a rugged camera to take outdoors, I think this is probably on the top three that is currently out in the market. If you want the best image quality in a P&S camera but are not too concerned about ruggedness, then your better of buying a Canon P&S. In my opinion, the AW100 is a little bit overpriced but I still would recommend it if you need a rugged camera.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange):
Camera is small and compact. It can photograph, videograph, shoot on land, in the air or under water, is shock proof and water proof. Consequently, I carry it with me at all times so that I never miss a shot. The results of shooting with the AW 100 are in most cases as good as my Nikon D200 and Canon HF G10. This camera is much easier to carry and can capture everything when it is cumbersome to carry the D200 or G10. It is an important part of my photography/videography arsenal. I highly recommend this camera

It may de durable but it is very slow to focus and shoot. With the plethora or shooting modes it's problematic in selecting the appropriate one until you have tried them all.
Focusing in low light also slow and problematic as well
Battery life is poor as can be. About 60% of listed performance. Not averaging the 2200+ shots per charge as estimated on packaging.

I bought this camera for a snorkeling trip to Costa Rica, and I can say it did not disappoint. The camera is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I love the safety I can feel with not being worried about ruining it all the time. The only thing that was difficult getting used to was the motion controls that you can use, but I learned them soon enough.

Bought this for my husband to use when snorkeling. Would be nice to have accessories listed that would fit like lens, float, case. Not impressed with GPS system, but then probably won't use it when taking pictures. Nice size, not too small and not too large. Would be nice to have smaller wrist strap instead of the long one that would have to be removed when used in the water.

Just got this camera and I'm really happy with it. My outdoor pics were fabulous. Lots of color. High action pics were crystal clear. Indoor pics are good but won't compare to my DSLR. There were several times I wish the flash would have fired but it didn't. You can use a different mode and make it fire but I hate going thru the menu options for freak occurances that are over before you get a chance to make adjustments. Outdoor video was very good. I can't wait to try it out snorkeling in Jamaica.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange):
After some research, I purchased this camera in order to give it as a gift to my Volunteer Fire Department in memory of my Uncle.
The purpose of the camera is to be used on scene during incidents, during all weather, and during all light conditions to provide After Action Review documentation and other photography/video needs.
Currently, we are all impressed with the camera. We have settled on one main setup that balances most of our photography needs. Being that we are taking photos of many things with highly reflective safety bands, the low light capabilities were important to us. The ISO up to 3200 is great so that we may use ambient light and not saturate the photo with the reflections from our gear that would be caused by any flash.
+ It is very durable, we have used it during calls and it works fine.
+ It works very well with dramatically changing light conditions.
+ It has excellent low light capabilities.
+ Snapping a photo is mostly easy, even with gloves.
+ Fairly worry free, just click and it takes good photos under almost any circumstances.
+ Easy to setup.
+ Can almost be operated with one hand.
+ Cleanup is easy, just dunk, shake, and store.
- Going between photo/video is somewhat difficult if wearing gloves.
- Included software does not run well on our antiquated computer.
- A lanyard type strap works best for our needs rather than an over the neck strap; however, the included strap can be reset to be used lanyard style.
- Advanced controls on the back are very touchy, so we do not do anything fancy with it during an incident.
- The recording can lag a bit if you are snapping rapid fire photos, switch to video.
- Autosensors can get confused with mutliple light sources and/or people. It seems the more complex the scene, the simpler the autosensor scheme must be set.
Clearly, this camera has more capabilities than what we are using it for. However, it fits the need for us to have a lightweight, compact photo/video camera that we can use to critique ourselves and serve our community better.
I would recommend this camera as a good point, shoot, and forget unit. It does what we want it to do.

Augment on-water racing/sailing photography when the weather is nasty - windy, waves, and get banged around.
My other cameras are Nikon DSLRs, vulnerable to saltwater, rain, moisture - keep them in dry-bag/case.
Hope AW100 is good enough during 2012 season. So far, so good. Have 16 GB SDHC card . . . will get a back-up battery.

I was looking for an upgrade in a small camera, but packed with a punch. The clarity and the true vivid color in each picture compared to my other pocket camera is unmatched. The fact that it is water and dust proof makes it that much more valuable when outdoors or on vacation. You no longer have to pack your camera in a zip-lock bag while you are on rides. I absolutely love this camera!

Comments about Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange):
For simple snorkelling this camera will get some fairly good shots. It is hard to see the image in the rear monitor and when looking from above the surface to get an underwater shot the glare can make it impossible to see what the shot would be. When you are also below the surface however it does pretty well. Handy also for conditions of spray and no doubt in dusty conditions. Fits easily into a pocket.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange):
I'm not usually a fan of compact digital cameras, since the image quality often is not up to my standards, but Nikon has done a great job with this one. I wanted a waterproof camera for a trip to Hawaii in April, and decided to upgrade from a Sony TX-5 to this one so as to have GPS data for the trip. The orange colour caught my eye, but the performance has made this one a keeper. This is the most responsive compact I have ever used, and the photo quality is better than I expected for a periscope style lens. That said, it is not a DSLR for quality (not even close), but it will do very nicely for it's intended use of snapshots and a digital travel diary. The photo quality at default settings is better than average, and a real step forward from the older Sony. The camera is also responsive, quick, and a pleasure to use. As a long time Nikon user, it helps that it is laid out in a similar fashion to all their other digital cameras, making it easy to pick up and use without the manual. I don't think anyone who is not used to Nikons will have too much trouble with it either, as it is more logical than many other compact cameras I have used. All in all, a great little travel camera that goes everywhere with me, and will stand up to things many others would not. The only drawbacks for me are somewhat short battery life with the GPS enabled, and they really should print the manual - CD's are annoying to us older folks!
