I initially gave this laptop a good review but after a couple of months it developed an issue not powering up unlesss you pushed the power button multiple times. We have sent it to HP three times and it is going back for the fourth time. Very frustrating.

Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard Pavilion dm1-4050us 11.6" Notebook Computer (Charcoal Gray):
Stupidly light and still fast without giving into any of the pitfalls of a netbook. What more can you ask for?...it's even lighter than the netbook it replaced.
And the speakers are insane for stock laptop speakers.

Lightweight and convenient. A bit slow compared to my I7 desktop - but not surprising. Good graphics and sound.
Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard Pavilion dm1-4050us 11.6" Notebook Computer (Charcoal Gray):
This netbook is intended for my personal photo-safari road trips, and its small footprint, low weight and resonable price fit the bill nicely. The screen is sharp, bright and displays realistic colors. The package of features/programs works well for me. The wireless performance is adequate and the built-in videocam handles SKYPE calls easily. On the road, I can email jpegs from processed RAW images (PSE 10 was added) to family and friends and keep them informed of my whereabouts and photo attempts. The large 500GB HD was an advantage b/c it has ample room for on-the-road image storage. And the external USB CD/DVD drive offers additional storage as needed.

We bought this Notebook to replace an Atom based HP Mini that was stolen. I hate to say it, but the thieves did us a favor. The size is small, but not cramped like the Mini. The display is bright and easy on the eyes. The i3 processor makes this a compact, capable little machine.

Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard Pavilion dm1-4050us 11.6" Notebook Computer (Charcoal Gray):
Pros: Quick, good size, Keyboard size and layout
Cons: Screen viewing angles, HP bloatware
I bought this machine to replace an aging netbook whose job it was to provide me music during my workday, as well as do some light office productivity and an occasional web editing job.
The DM1-4050us was an outstanding choice. The Core i3 processor easily handles all the tasks I ask of it. I'm especially pleased at its ability to handle streaming video without any issues at all.
Some might think the 11.6" screen is too small, but I find it perfect. A 15.6" is just too much weight to carry around, but the 11.6" DM1 is the sweet spot - plenty of screen real estate but excellent portability.
The viewing angles on the screen are a disappointment, but since I don't share my screen often, I can live with it. The Beats audio is nice - really makes streaming audio crisper and more pleasant to listen to.
No complaints from me...I'm a happy camper with my DM1.

I bought this model along with the HP carying case for my wife after researching other compact laptops and determined that for size, price and performance this laptop was what would work best to replace her 14 in. Toshiba Techra. We wanted net book size but with much more performance and a full operating system. It runs MS office, map SW and surfs the Internet with good speed and great battery life. We are looking forward to using it when we travel.

Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard Pavilion dm1-4050us 11.6" Notebook Computer (Charcoal Gray):
I bought this notebook to replace my wonderful, but under-powered, HP mini 311. This makes comparisons "easy" but I will try to be objective.
This notebook is also replacing a fully-powered, Shuttle desktop.
One star was taken off purely for style. See below.
I use my Pavilion dm1 as my main computer at home. Multi-tasking is an everyday and nearly all-day affair. I am constantly downloading something while playing games, writing reports for work, surfing the internet. Almost always, there are at least two significant tasks going on at the same time. This pc handles it all gracefully. It may be at the low end of the full-powered spectrum, but it is in there.
Specific likes:
1. Keyboard. This is one of the best keyboards of any kind (notebook or not) that I have ever used. I have fairly average sized hands, not large for a man, and the keyboard fits me perfectly.
2. Touchpad. Works much better than earlier HP touchpads. Feel is good and I have quickly gotten used to the multi-gesture functionality, which means it was well-implemented.
3. Screen. Nice and bright. I don't use it often, as I connect to two external displays, but when I need it, it is clear and bright.
4. Ports. You can read the specs, but this notebook has the full selection we have come to expect from full-sized notebooks.
5. Size. I live in Japan. Everything just looks bigger in my small apartment. I really appreciate having a full-powered pc that takes up no more space than a netbook.
Specific dislikes:
1. Style. I don't like the matte, plasticky exterior or the combination of matte keyboard and shiny display bezel. Stylistically, it is not "tight". I am being picky here, it is reasonably attractive. But it could have been better.
I took one star off for style, because looks matter. Purely as a functional machine, it is a five-star device. I would buy another immediately if this one were lost or stolen.

Comments about HP / Hewlett Packard Pavilion dm1-4050us 11.6" Notebook Computer (Charcoal Gray):
I bought this pc to replace my HP Mini 311, with the Atom 270 CPU.
The CPU in this one, a near-normal core i3 that has been under-clocked for coolness, makes all the difference. Everything is very snappy. Windows 7 is also nice and has features that make it easier to use than XP (which I love).
Things I especially like:
1. Excellent keyboard. I can type as easily on this keyboard as on any I have owned. It is even as good as the ergonomic "split" keyboard I have. Key positioning is superb.
2. Enough USB ports (three).
3. HDMI and VGA so I can have two external displays.
4. Fits in my netbook's small Zero-shock bag.
5. It has MS Office Starter. Word and Excel. This is good to have.
Things I don't like:
1. Outer casing looks plasticky and cheap. The Mini 311 looks better. Also, the bezel around the display is very shiny and doesn't match the matte finish of the keyboard. Stylistically clumsy.
2. Win 7 and AVG didn't play nice together. Lots of crashes until I replaced AVG with Microsoft Security Essentials. Now it's solid.
That's it. I bit pricey for a "super-netbook" but, really, this is all the pc I need for the next three years or so. It was the smallest "full-powered" pc I could afford. I am very happy with it.
B&H shipped it promptly, to Japan, affordably and with no hassle. I appreciate that as well.
I took the one star off purely because of errors in styling. As a working machine, it is a five-star item.
