This netbook is everything I needed! I've done a lot of research and I narrowed down this is as the product I wanted. I am an avid, amature photographer and I needed a way to backup my images in the field. My requirements included under $400, large memory, lightweight and relatively small. After looking at all the gadgets and gizmo's out there~ I purchased this guy.
My first impressions on receiving the netbook: It actually didn't feel as cheap as i expected, considering what I paid for it. Initial bootup was slow but after removing bloatware and setting up the system as I saw fit, it was running smoothly. Following that I did system checks with Netflix, music, general typing and net use.
Here's a few problems i found. Netflix was initially unwatchable. The video lagged so far behind the audio after only 10 seconds (i confirmed this with multiple movies, reboots, driver updates). I had to go back into my netflix settings and scale back the video quality to medium. Now the movies play perfect! I will also admit that the screen isn't high quality either.
The next problem i found that tags both with Netflix and the music playback. The onboard sound is very faint even when turned all the way up! My cellphone plays louder than this. I normally wear headphones so it wasn't a major setback, but be warned! I took other reviewers opinion of the sound with a grain of salt but they were right.
Typing with this keyboard is different but i dont mind it. It's not my main pc and i can handle the trade to a small keyboard on the road, i'm not writing a book on it so dont mind it at all. It's not as flimsy as other reviewers made it sound (unless they pound their keyboards at home like some capitalone actor) honestly it's just fine.
General net use is perfect, no complaints. Speed is as expected. Flickr, facebook, youtube, etc. functions fine. It should... I mean it's a netbook.
After using it like it was intended, i decided to up the ante and try to make it struggle. Phase 1: Adobe Lightroom 3 and Canon's tethering software. I expected the load time on Lightroom to be slower than my PC and so it was. But the loadup was still quite fast considering what I was expecting. Images loaded right up, slight delay with some editing tools but fairly acceptable for what it is and what i'm doing. Tethering my 5D Mark II to this netbook is the bee's knees. It is amazing and I cant believe I did all my work without this PRICELESS tool. What do I mean by tethering you ask? Attaching my 5DII to my laptop with full controls for f/stop, iso, shutter speed, taking shots, changing focus, you name it and it can be done. It also saves a duplicate of the shot on my netbook alongside the copy on the CF card! Other programs out there you can buy that will automatically setup HDR bracketing, Focus stacking and more! Simply amazing. My favorite thing to do is take pictures of the milky way and take pictures of star trails~ now i can make my focusing easier and now I can compile my images in the field!
Phase 2: photoshop cs5 and a few video games (old gen). I haven't got this far yet but from what i've seen it'll be slow but with patience and understanding its limits it should do fine. Maybe once i have tested this out i will come back and edit this feedback.
Hope this helps everyone! For the price it cannot be beat. Great buy.

Tradeoffs - When I was looking into buying a netbook, I considered both 10.1" and 11.6" netbooks. The 10.1" units are tiny and extremely portable, but there is very little screen real estate and the keyboard keys are reduced in size. The small netbooks are also not very powerful and spec-out rather low. The 11.6" units have a bigger screen and full-size keys, but overall are much bigger than the 10.1" units. They are more like small laptops rather than netbooks, so you have to give up some portability benefits. The 11.6" units are more powerful, and you can get a unit like this Acer, that has lots of memory, a big disk, and a powerful enough processor and video system to support an HDMI output for HD video playback.
Performance - The performance is adequate for normal web browsing, email, word processing, etc. Web surfing and page scrolling is reasonably snappy, even on complex e-store pages. I have played DVDs and Blu-ray discs using an external optical drive without problems. In general, you can have many windows open without too much slowdown, although the "busy" icon occurs frequently but briefly. Having 4 gigs of memory is a big plus to avoid slowdowns.
Screen - I am somewhat disappointed in the screen, because of the poor color rendition and the narrow viewing angle. You can tweak the colors using the Windows 7 color calibration feature, and this helps a lot, but even so, it's not a great screen for enjoying colorful photos. The horizontal viewing angle is no problem, but the vertical viewing angle is quite narrow, and you have to position the screen carefully for best results.
Keyboard - I got the 11.6" netbook to get full-size keys, since I am a touch typist. The flat smooth keys are harder to touch-type than the typical sculptured keys on a desktop keyboard, but with practice I am getting used to the netbook keyboard. The keyboard is slightly mushy (it flexes in use) but I don't really notice it in normal typing. Already, one keytop has come loose, but I was able to press it back on, so I worry about the keyboard reliability.
The touchpad works pretty well, and there are a lot of settings to customize it to your own preferences. So far, I have been able to use the computer just fine without using an external mouse, so that's one less accessory I have to carry around.
HDMI and HD - I have used this Acer with an external Blu-Ray drive (by Buffalo, reviewed separately), and then I connected the Acer to an external HD TV via the HDMI output. This setup plays 1080i Blu-Ray movies just fine, and they look great on the HD TV. (Press Fn + F5 to cycle through the HDMI display modes.) For best results, you should also press Fn + F3 to shut down the wi-fi, otherwise network activity can cause the HD playback to briefly stutter. You can also view Blu-Ray HD movies on the Acer's screen, without using the HDMI output. In this mode, the display is very crisp and the colors are very rich, however viewing suffers a little due to the narrow vertical viewing angle, especially during dark scenes.
Misc - This Acer is very quiet; the disk is completely silent and the fan is barely audible. It doesn't seem to get hot. It's lightweight and easy to carry.
The Acer system documentation that comes on the hard drive is pitiful, not very usable for anything. It contains very brief generic netbook/laptop information, with no specific information on the specs of this particular model. It took a while just to find out what the function key icons meant, and I never did find any explanation of how you know the system is sleeping or hibernating, as opposed to shut down. Believe it or not, the manual includes such helpful information as "do not put your computer in the microwave".
The installed software is basic, without too much junk that has to be removed. The Windows 7 Home Premium software works just fine. There is an Acer utility to make bootable system reinstallation discs if you ever have to restore your system from scratch. The system can also write the reinstallation files to a flash drive, and can be configured to boot off the flash drive to reinstall the system.
The webcam, microphone, and speakers are adequate for Skype, but the speakers are weak and tinny enough that you will not enjoy playing music through the speakers. Listening through headphones works well, the music sounds great, but that's another accessory to carry.
The wi-Fi works fine, no problems observed, although the Windows 7 wi-fi management software sure is confusing.
Overall, I'm satisfied with this Acer netbook and would recommend it. I only give it 3.5 stars, though, because as a netbook, it's a collection of tradeoffs, most of which have a downside.

Comments about Acer 500GB 11.6" Aspire One 722 AO722-0418 Netbook (Expresso Black):
So far this has been a great little computer. It's lightweight and surprisingly fast. I purchased this netbook for a trip later this summer- I will be using it to download my photos each day and keep up with work and study while I'm travelling. So far I don't have any reservations about taking it on the trip. I would agree with what several other commentors (on this site and others) have said - you MUST uninstall all the extra bloatware to really get this machine running properly. It was a bit laggy upon initial boot but runs just fine with all the extra stuff gone. The battery life is about what is advertised (7 hrs) and screen resolution is fine. I also like the touchpad on this machine. It's somehow positioned so it's out of the way when you are typing. I have an HP laptop that is impossible to type on without deactivating the touchpad, so it's a relief to not be constantly fighting it on this machine. The keyboard does seem a little bit flimsy - if you are a particularly heavy-handed typer this may not be the machine for you since the keyboard feels almost... bendy? But if you are just an average typer I think it's fine. I would still take this mediocre keyboard over trying to type on our HP tablet any day of the week. Overall, I would definitely buy again!

Purchased 9 of them from B&H in February for use in LEGO Mindstorms robotics workshops that started in March. On the first day of use, 1 of the hard drives crashed (Error message: No boot device found, check cable connection).
On the 2nd day of use, another hard drive crashed....same error message.
Contacted B&H customer service who simply referred me to ACER customer service saying that ACER had "discontinued" the line. Contacted ACER customer service who confirmed the hard drive crash and sent Fedex labels so we could mail them in.
On the 4th day of use, another hard drive crashed....same error message....and then the trackpad stops working on another machine. We sent emails to management of ACER but they did not respond.
On the 6th day of use, another hard drive crashed....same error message.
So of 9 ACER netbooks purchased, 5 of them have required repair in less than a month of use. All these malfunctions have happened in the middle of the delivery of our workshops and have been a great inconvenience.

Why spend 300 on a HP netbook w/1GB of RAM when you can have this beauty for[$]?This is a no-brainer. Yes, as a netbook it still has limitations. It's not meant for serious gaming, it doesn't have an external drive (but they're not expensive). On the other hand, you can hold it with one hand and type with the other in inconvenient spaces. You can also run it for hours with its regular battery.I love this thing. I wish I'd gotten something like this years ago.

It's our first laptop so nothing to compare it to. Nonetheless, it's perfect for our needs. I should say my wife's needs since I purchased it for her. She's been wanting a laptop for a year or so now and she loves this one. As of right now no complaints to report. Sure a learning curve but that's to be expected.

I bought this netbook based mainly on the comments I read on this website since I've never had a netbook before and didn't know what to expect. I'm a regular graduate student who needs to write papers, read articles, and check email. this netbook seems to be very slow even for this. Maybe I'm comparing it to my laptop, but everytime I think what to use, I prefer to get back to my old laptop. too bad because it looks kind of nice!

Not much to look at, but plenty under the hood! I was on the fence between purchasing a tablet PC or a netbook. I opted for this. This is my 2nd Acer netbook that I've owned (after my 1st one got smashed on the floor) and so far, so good. I'm on my 3rd day of use. The 4GB of RAM helps with my photo and graphic design programs. The screen resolution is excellent. I don't care for the 'water drop' design at all. Leave the aesthetics to Apple. :) The keyboard is too bouncy. Meaning, you press the key and about four other keys surrounding it slightly sink down with it. I don't like that the casing just collects fingerprints. But those are all just aesthetics. It handles well, and comes with more than enough ports for what I need. Would I recommend it? Yes. The price was right and the muscle is a lot compared to most other netbooks out there at this size and price point.

I am a professional photojournalist and have been getting more road assignments the past couple years that require me to send photos from the field. My previous laptop was great but it was also large and heavy which made it a pain to carry in addition to all of the camera gear I need. I've been looking at netbooks for a couple of years, but most only had one, maybe 2 GB of RAM. Adobe Photoshop is a memory hog, and though it will run with only 2GB of RAM, it won't run smoothly. This computer has 4GB of RAM and Photoshop runs quite well on it.
This computer may not be enough to serve as a replacement for a high-powered home or office computer, but it's great for road-trips and easy on the should when carrying.
I gave it 5 stars, not so much as to how it compares to all other computers, but for how it compares to other netbooks.

Purchased the Acer AS1410 for a family member. loved, loved, loved it but it sold out before I could purchase one for myself...I feel I found it in the 722-0418, with a bigger hard drive & more memory.
Powerful little notebook...BIG hard drive, great graphics, adequate speed for word processing, surfing the net & reading e-books. I haven't used the gaming options yet.
This is the perfect size for travel or use anywhere in the home. Look forward to putting it through all it's paces.
Due to it's size, it feels a bit more fragile than the next size laptop, screen feels especially fragile. Keep it in a sleeve or carrying case for extra protection. Grab this one while it's available...it may sell out as quickly as it's predecessor.! Can't beat the B&H price.
