The Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (White) is a compact and easily portable digital camera with both a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens and a 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens included. The mirrorless design allows the camera to be extra-small and lightweight, while still retaining all of the best qualities of a mirrored model. Featuring a 10.1 MP CX-Format High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor and an EXPEED 3 dual image processor, this small device packs some punch. The sensor enables great photos even in low light, while the EXPEED 3 enables superior system performance, high-speed processing, advanced phase detection autofocus and high-speed data transfer rates.
The included 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens features up to 3x magnification and a silent stepping AF motor (STM). It has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. The angle of view ranges from 29° 40" to 77°. The lens's minimum focus distance is 0.66' (0.2m), and the filter size is 40.5mm. The 10-30 mm is a versatile lens for applications ranging from wide-angle to tight portrait shots, and applies 3 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality, even at the widest aperture settings. The 10-30mm zoom range enables excellent capture of fine detail, even in far-away shots. Internal Focusing / IF technology enables more compact, lightweight construction, as well as a closer focusing distance. A multi-layer lens coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level.
The included 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens (81-297mm 35mm equivalent) works great for isolating subjects from their backgrounds with clarity, and also has Internal Focusing / IF to maintain compactness of size--even when using the zoom. It also has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. Its telephoto coverage makes it great for a wide array of scene types, from sports to portraits. Enjoy superior sharpness and color correction-even at the widest aperture. Your photos will be crystal clear and sharp, even those taken from far away. Capture sweeping vistas with the wide depth of field. Nikon's Super Integrated Coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level, and also assists in the creation of superior color balance and reproduction. ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass reduces chromatic aberration to allow for superior sharpness and color correction. The lens's angle of view ranges from 8° 20" to 29° 40". The lens has a minimum focus distance of 3.3' (1.0m) and a filter size of 40.5mm.
The J1 camera has an interchangeable lens system, allowing you to select from 3 optional 1 NIKKOR lenses in addition to the included one. There's even a lens designed specifically for movie filming. Swapping lenses is quick and easy, enabling you to stay at-the-ready at all times. Aside from the 10-30 and 30-110 mm focal lengths of the included lenses, you may choose a single focal length of 10 mm or a 10-100 mm zoom.
A highly responsive autofocus and a fast shooting speed ensure that you never miss a moment. You get 10 fps continuous shooting speed in autofocus mode, so your camera won't lag behind the action. An impressive 73 point AF array gives you amazing clarity, even when capturing fast-moving subjects. A large 3.0" LCD color screen features a 460k-dot resolution and an anti-glare coating for easy viewing, even in bright sunlight.
Enjoy one-touch Full HD (1080p) movie record mode-and the ability to capture still images while recording! Add a slow-motion effect to make your imaging more dramatic. Experience the Motion Snapshot One-Touch Photo Animation Experience to bring your photos to life. This feature essentially creates a picture slideshow where there would otherwise be merely a single image. Thanks to Smart Photo Selector, the J1 chooses the best of the images you've taken, so all you have to focus on is getting the shot you want. Let the camera do the work for you while you do what you love and stay in the moment. Enjoy easy access to advanced features with a menu that is easy to follow, no matter how much photography experience you've had.

After having gotten into DSLR's and learning a lot about manual shooting and lenses and lighting and... all that stuff, I found that although I enjoyed it, I never found the time to pull the camera out with my new daughter and my wife ready to deliver our second child. I sold my Nikon D5000 and purchased this knowing that it would be a slight sensor downgrade but a HUGE usability upgrade.
I love that the camera feels kind of DSLR-ish and offers many similar featuers yet it's as easy to use and nearly as compact as a point and shoot. I'd recommend this to any Nikon DSLR users that are finding they don't have or can't take the time to play with their nice cameras.

We have a digital SLR Canon XSi and my wife wanted something much smaller. She's been wanting this camera since it was first introduced. Got it for a Mother's Day gift - she was taking pictures with it that afternoon. Included the SanDisk 8gb Extremem HD memory card. These + extended warranty = Great combination and a happy mother!!

I heard about this camera when it was first released. You can believe everything you hear…about this camera. It seem that this camera was made to function better than people's eyesight. The pics are so crisp and detailed its amazing!! No complaints whatsoever.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (White):
I have stepped up from a compact to buy J1 as my wife wanted better portraits & video of herself and our your children. I believe Nikon have targeted this camera towards people like me and they have hit the nail perfectly on the head. I love the simplicity of the controls and will probably rarely dig into the settings to change detailed settings.
The 4 shooting modes are great. The auto scene selector seems to work a treat and the camera takes amazingly clear and bright shots in low light. So far, we have had no need to use the flash inside even in the late evening with no lights on. Skin tones and other colour appears very natural. You have to try a slow motion video of kids on a trampoline to appreciate the genius behind that feature. My 12 year old son also started making short slow motion martial arts movies. You do need good light for the slow motion video. HD video is relatively smooth and clear even in low light situations. The smart photo selector works well for family portraits or groups at parties. The motion snapshot is probably our least used feature, but it I can see that it could be fun and useful when capturing children playing.
The J1 seems very well built. We love the look (white). It was heavier in hand or around my neck than anticipated. Battery could be better...we only got 2 days out of it after some heavy photo and video usage. Overall, I love it...and so do my wife and kids. Professionals or enthusiasts looking for more control via easy access dials...this camera is obviously not for you! Why bother even complaining...just don't be surprised if the results from the J1 are often better than your DSLR.

In art college I took a few classes in photography. Then I had a really good film camera with interchangeable lenses. Since the digital age I have mainly dabbled with quality Carl Zeiss lensed point and shoots.
This was my first "nice" camera purchase. No it's not like my husband's professional Nikon D-series but for me it's perfect. I am amazed at the low-light quality and the ease in using the camera. My husband was surprised at the quality imagery it produces.
I also bought a leather camera body to protect the white plastic body. The craftsmanship and optional accessories are terrific.
I have a little trouble when the zoom lenses is on keeping the camera steady. I think I just need to get use to it.
I also use this for product shots at work and it's is terrific.

I'm not a professional photographer, but I do enjoy a good camera. I can take this camera pretty much anywhere without it being a hassle an it takes great pictures for my purposes. The slow motion video feature is fun, but I find the quality of it not that great. Still playing around with the camera so I'm not sure of all the features yet, but having lots of fun

Before this, I had the Nikon D90, which is a stellar piece of equipment, but difficult to use on-the-go. I like that Nikon J1 doesn't have to suffer in quality in order to be compact in size. Also, being able to change lenses makes for a higher quality camera and picture.

I am a semi-professional photographer. I bought this camera for casual use because of it's size and it's interchangeable lenses. It gets tiring carrying around my DSLR all the time. I love the look and feel of this camera and the movie modes and continuous shooting are wonderful. I have yet to download the images into my computer but they look really good on the screen.

I have owned many SLR cameras and I was excited to find that this little Nikon packs a similar punch when it comes to flexibility and control over image adjustment. I only wish the f stop and shutter adjusting could be done quicker- my only complaint is that they have to be edited by going in to the menu settings to do so. Still a great small camera with tons of flexibility though! And I LOVE the slow motion video setting!
