To be clear up front, this is not a DSLR replacement. As long as you understand that, you will be blown away by this 'point and shoot'. Full 12 bit NEF's, nice sharp lenses, fast startup. It has a lot of DSLR-like features in a very compact body. It's a bit more menu driven than I would like, but it wasn't necessarily designed for a DSLR shooter either. The menus are easily accessible. Get the FT-1 adaptor and you suddenly have a wide range of lenses to use (G lenses give you AF, D lenses don't) with a 2.7 crop factor. That gives me excellent reach on my 70-300 ((189-810 equivalent!)

This is the camera I had hoped the P7000 would be. Build quality is much better than the P7000, feels very sturdy. Get the whole system!

I bought into the whole concept and system. It's highlights are well represented in other reviews. A few lowlights to be aware of. It would be so nice if you could use the RAW files without having to purchase Nikon software and possible a new computer that can handle the software requirements. You definitely notice the compression in the JPEG files. I'm surprised there is no auto bracketing. And finally the most annoying feature is that you cannot get rid of the ridiculous jingle that is attached to every motion snapshot.

I´m an amateur photograph. I had until now point and shoot cameras for traveling, family pictures.
I´m using the Nikon 1 V1 in the same way with much better quality. The lenses are great.

Takes fantastic pictures, turns on almost instantly. Focus is super fast, viewfinder is beautiful, with all the info you want. Small sensor = small lenses (not like Sony Compacts, where the lenses are the size of the lenses for my D7000!). Don't be fooled; it takes great photos, better than many cameras with larger sensors, even at high ISO - fortunately Nikon optimized for quality, not megapixel count. There are two shortcomings: the hot shoe cover is easily lost (but not critical), and the mode dial on the right side is easy to bump into video mode by accident if you're wearing gloves or putting it into a pocket.

This camera is a little gem, firstly, its an equivalent Super 16mm video format camera creating very nice 1080 HD quality, but it also works as a totally silent stills camera pushing out 10mp resolution files in RAW or JPG without a sound with a focusing system that would match or better many DSLR's today, the dedicated lenses are small enough, crisp, well made and quiet to focus with as well.

The camera is well built and is a size that is not too big or too small to use, therefore a bigger more powerful battery than you typically get in a compact can be accommodated into the camera and the system doesn't need to rely on massive in-camera processing/corrections for the sake of making the camera typically smaller (obvious trend in this market if you look at other similar models).

The built in EVF is not distracting in real use - I normally use optical viewfinder designed cameras, it's also still very comfortable to work with over longer periods, not at all distracting as I first thought.

The system will benefit from having some fast lens choices and the ability to disable the camera preview which annoyingly reviews images after the shot, these I'm sure are being addressed, but overall don't take away from the real benefits of this camera for me.

An added bonus to this camera is that you can even attach your other F-mount lenses to it, pushing it's potential as a long lens shooter.

I can see this working very well for my on-set stuff - I'm not saying it's perfect yet, but it is the start of a new genre of camera, the silent fast high quality pocket compact, easily carrying 3 or 4 of these around primed up each with some fast lenses used for my handheld stuff and even rigging quick remote functioning V1's around too - this could just give you the edge for better coverage, angles, options like never before.

This camera is for someone who sees the possibilities in a system, digital advantages and new areas of creativity, it's definately not for someone who is fixated with "a good picture must have good bokeh" mentality or harkening over a camera that mimics film. I think while the bokeh crowd are looking at their "bokehlicious" shot and retro leather-look camera designs, there will be a lot of shooters out there, creating, covering better content from these little gems.

This is not my only camera - I also shoot using FX or above in terms of sensor sizes, but these V1's have found a place in my kit bag and brings back the "spirit of photography" in a fresh way. I can see it working alongside the D4 in video with its pixel matching capabilities and certain jobs where the D4 just would be unnecessary or bulky in certain assignments,

With the fee restructuring for editorial assignments on a downward trend, these cameras would make far better sense for editorial assignments in the future, they are light, discrete and cheap - important to running a profitable biz.
