The Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer is a printer for the working professional photographer. Targeted towards users of DSLR cameras like the Canon EOS 60D, 7D and 1D, the PRO-1 is a welcome addition to Canon's existing printer line. It accepts media from 4.0 x 6.0" to 13 x 19" in size. Roll media is not accepted.
The new print head features 12,288 nozzles, improving upon the 7,680 on the previous model, the PRO 9500 Mk II. This head offers an expanded color gamut and faster print speeds than were previously possible. The inks are housed on the side of the head and delivered via a tubular system. Placement on the side allows the ink tanks to be larger, and at 36 ml, they can hold 157% more ink than the 14 ml tanks of their predecessors, the PRO 9500 and 9500 Mk II.
The PIXMA PRO-1 boasts 12 pigment-based inks / colors from the LUCIA family in 12 channels, including 5 monochrome inks for expanding the color gamut in dark areas: Matte Black, Photo Black, Dark Gray, Gray and Light Gray. In addition to these monochrome colors, the printer offers Cyan, Photo Cyan, Magenta, Photo Magenta, Yellow, Red and the special Chroma Optimizer. This last one provides a clear coat that enhances the uniform glossiness of the paper and also broadens the color gamut. The optimizer enhances black density for truer, richer blacks, as well. This ink system provides smooth gradations, suppressed graininess and an anti-bronzing effect for increased clarity and color fidelity. Enjoy professional-quality grayscale and color prints. There's no swapping of black ink cartridges required, saving time and ink, since you don't need to manually switch cartridges--a lengthy process which often results in ink loss--or wait for the printer to automatically switch between cartridges.
The super-quiet PRO-1 also boasts the capacity for direct CD and DVD printing. ICC profiles are available to ensure that contrast range and color saturation look the same across different paper types. These profiles will provide color-managed workflows and help to ensure that your prints look like the images on your camera's monitor. With ICC's, there's no need to manually adjust channels in Photoshop--the printer and its drivers do the work for you. Canon's ICC profiles load with the included driver. Other manufacturer's profiles, including Moab, ILFORD and Hahnemuhle, are available by downloading the required drivers on the manufacturer's websites.
The PIXMA PRO-1 features 10/100 Ethernet connectivity, a USB 2.0 port, and a PictBridge port that allows you to print directly from your compatible camera.

I am an advanced amateur photographer, my previous printer is HP9180 (still in use), I purchased the Pixma Pro 1 mainly for BW photography. I typically use the printer 3 to 4 times a week, working a couple of hours each time. Currently using Lightroom 4 beta
My first impressions of the printer are generally very good as far as printing results are concerned, but I have mixed feelings about the rest and hope to resolve the remaining difficulties. Installing the printer was very easy according to included instructions.
Print quality is superb; although I did not do any profiling, using the available profiles for Hahnemuhle and Ilford paper produced prints where I could notice a slight improvement over the HP9180.
On the negative side: I do not see why FA paper between 0.2 and 0.3 mm cannot be fed through the real tray. I tried a couple of them and it all went well, but could this damage the printer? The manual feed is reserved to limited sizes of pre-cut sheets.
A more serious concern I have is for ink consumption. I understand that about 1/3 of the ink tanks go into filling the printhead as the printer is installed. However, the printer used over 1/2 of the remaining ink in less than a week of testing. Total printed area about 4 or 5 13X19 sheets. I did turn on and off the printer several times, is this the reason for excess ink consumption? I now stopped testing as ink is not available in stock. I do not think this ink consumption is normal. Maybe Canon can explain or give advice on the matter.

i use this product every day .. and every day i print around 30 11x17 . i use this one for Black and white and fine art printing most of the time .. What's wrong with it? .. the cost per print is very hi.somebody can explain why if i print only black and white i already change the complete set of inks.... twice !!! do some maths [$]printer+$350 inkset + $350 inkset ..i know it have to clean the heads but it just waste a Lot of ink... a Lot of ink ....a LOT of ink ..Other problem is the paper feed mechanism .. it just doesn't take the paper .. i use fine art papers as i stated before and i usually have problems with other printers not feeding that type of papers but not out of the box .. my canon pro 9500 develop this problem after 6 months and 4 thousand prints it for sure prints very nice, quite and it also looks good and professional on the desk. But plz dont spend that kind of money on a printer that have so many problems !!i also add a picture as a proofp.d. somebody else feels my pain ?

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I use this for photo prints and graphic design prints and it handles both very nicely once the files are tweaked some. Lately, however, I've had the network connection dropping out either between prints or, in some cases, during prints. I'm going to contact Canon about it because it's too new to get any advice off the web.

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I purchased this printer mainly for printing my own DVD/Blu-Ray Discs, which it does very well! My biggest complaint is that I have hardly used this printer at all, and it's going through ink like there is no tomorrow! Is there a problem here, Canon? Maybe I've got it set up wrong, but it sure uses the ink, and I don't know where it's going!
Love the printer, but I don't love buying all of the ink it takes to feed it.

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I bought my Pixma Pro-1 printer from B&H.
The printer is easy to set up; works great with Protoshop CS5 on Windows 7 and prints beautifully. Once it has gone through it's startup dance, the Pro-1 prints quite fast.
Getting the best results requires some experimentation or outside info. Check George Schaub's review of the Pro-1 in the March issue of Shutterbug. This helped me print much better on Canon Matte paper and select some non-Canon papers for printing.
I replaced an Epson 3800 with the Pro-1 rather than the Epson 4900, because I expected better black and white prints (expectations met); it's smaller, and replacement ink cartridges cost less. Also, I rarely make prints wider than 13 inches.
Lower replacement ink cartridge prices doesn't mean the relative cost of Canon ink is less than Espon ink. You get a whole lot more Epson 4900 ink for $100 (250ml) than Canon Pro-1 ink for $36 (14ml), but you don't have to shell out $100 every time you have to replace a cartridge.
In addition to Canon's Matte paper, I have come to appreciate the company's Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, Pro Platinum, Photo Paper Semi-Gloss, as well as Museo's Silver Rag and Moab's Slickrock Metalic Pearl and Entrada Natural Rag.

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I purchased this printer as part of a new digital darkroom setup and I couldn't be happier. Color print quality is outstanding. And I am extremely pleased with the black and white prints.
I have had no problem finding the ICC profiles for this printer and papers I want to use.
I don't really have a handle yet the cost of ownership in regards to ink costs. However it is great to have the 12 ink cartridges and to not have to change out cartridges based upon color type and print medium as that process always wasted ink during the change-out process.
But be forewarned this thing is a beast and certainly stretches the definition of "desktop" printer.

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
This printer produces the most amazing prints of the pixels on the screen. It is not easy to setup as the Easy-Photo Print Pro doesn't get installed by default and that is pretty much required in PS.
And -- With a ColorMunki Photo to calibrate your monitors and the output from the printer, what is on the screen is what appears on the printer.
Be careful not to think that the prints are too dark. Be assured that your monitor settings have them too bright. And wait for the prints to dry. Sometimes 24 hrs later you can see more detail and color in a photo than when originally printed.
This is a true PRO level printer, and can be deceptively easy to setup and print with. Know that adding color calibration through the entire process will only generate better, more accurate prints.

I've upgraded from the original Pixma 9500 to the new Pixma Pro-1. Didn't go the Pixma Pro 9500 Mark II route, so you can say I've waited for the next generation of Canon professional printers. i'm totally impressed with the quality and speed of the printer. I've reprinted some very tough compositions on the new Pro-1 and found significant and subtle differences from the 9500. The first review i've ever wrote...proud to say that the new Pixma Pro-1 was worth the wait...I have no regrets. Footprint is large though but my wife has learned to live with it...funny how these adjustment happen.

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I spent months researching printers to augment my new photo business. I went to shows and read reviews in all the photo mags as well as online. Then the Pixma Pro-1 was released with a production delay that did not change my mind after having seen the demos. B&H had a waiting list and when my email came I ordered with two day shipping.
My report is this:
Set up was easy and simple. Each step was clear and straight forward. I felt like a fighter pilot inserting the ink sets as each have an indicator light at the top to show when they are completly inserted.
After two test prints for calabration, I printed out my first pictures which offered complete vindication for the wait. I love the fact that if I load the wrong paper size the printer knows and passes it through with a wrong paper size screen note! The quality is stunning. There is no demarcation between colors that I used to see in some comercial prints I ordered, some of which could have a coppery sheen (anti bronzing). These inks and the coating process show nothing other than smooth transistions.
I took my first few prints to my photo mentors and they were also taken aback by the quality. My only problem would be that I now need to start calibrating my two screens as I can see where my prints differ from the screens.
It is to soon for me to report on ink usage or reliablity. Look for my update on down the road. I am one happy camper!

Comments about Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Photo Printer:
I am a photo enthusiast that likes high end equipment, and this printer certainly is a wonderful machine! It is very large and heavy (79.5 pounds),so use 2 people to lift and set into place. Make sure you have ample space and a sturdy table to place it on. I had no trouble setting it up, and the automatic head alignment process took about 20 minutes or so to complete. You will notice that the ink levels all drop somewhat after head alignment, but after printing several photos--1 8x10, and two 4X6--I didn't notice any real decrease in the ink levels. Using the software that came with the printer, my first prints came out beautifully--exactly as they appeared on my monitor, and I did absolutely no monitor calibration whatsoever. Way cool! Since I've only just begun to use this printer, there is not much more to say. I will add that this is the quietest printer that I have ever used and I am very impressed with the build quality.

This printer was worth waiting for as it was delayed in shipping after the release. I bought it as my first high quality printer for output of my phototgraphy hobby. I am impressed by the simple setup and first prints pulled. It even reminds me when I have loaded the wrong size paper for the selected size! The colors are amazing and let me know that I need to calibrate my screen. I am a happy camper!
