i tried to build a similar gaming system from a website that sells wares quite possibly made by aliens. It came out a lot more expensive and still did not have all the features i got with this laptop. I have reccomended it to a lot of friends

Comments about ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-DH73-3D 17.3" Notebook Computer:
I bought this PC primarily to play games and enjoy multimedia, secondarily to have a decent Windows 7 "laptop" that I could use for anything I need Windows for. I'm pleased to say that this massive, hulking portable exceeded my expectations for both.
While the size and the weight of this machine teeter on the brink of the word "portable" I do lug it around in its specially sized backpack. It's easy to set up and break down as needed. It ships with a very nice gaming quality mouse.
I'm able to play a wide range of video games on high settings without incident and the 17" display is more than adequate. The built-in audio's not bad and it has a built-in cam and mic that work fine. If I need more space, I can output the 1080p display easily to my HD-TV. However, videos -- Netflix, youtube, etc. -- look great, like it's a 17" HD-TV itself.
I'd give it that fifth star in the rating if it didn't come preloaded with tons of bloatware that I had to spend hours and hours removing, reinstalling, reconfiguring, etc. And while the construction itself is relatively sturdy and not unattractive, there are too many other laptops that are more solid to say that this is a five-star construction.
I also want to give an enthusiastic thumbs up to B&H for quick turnaround and excellent customer service (and a very good price too).

I am 60 years old and have been in the computer hardware and software development for 30 years. I am certainly a power user, I have 4 laptops I use regularly now. Dell, Toshiba and IBM, they are all poorly build and more poorly supported. From day one, right out of the box my ASUS has been a dream come true. It works, its fast, i runs cool and quiet. You will never regret getting one.

Comments about ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-DH73-3D 17.3" Notebook Computer:
This is a great desktop replacement. If you want a portable laptop, this ain't it, it's a monster, which eats through a full battery charge very quickly. The screen is great. It has oodles of RAM and can handle pretty much anything you throw at it gamewise (maybe not on ultra detail and native res but still really good).
The keyboard isn't so great, the layout and reliability of presses could be better for the standard W-A-S-D game layout where you need to hold down ctrl/shift/c etc.
And for some bizarre reason the HD came divided into 4 separate partitions, instead of 2 (1 per drive). This is kind of pointless (eg I have more photos than would fit into one of those), fixing this basically involved reinstalling (recovering) the OS, which took a loooong time.
One other minor design flaw is that the power socket is on the right, near where you want to hold the mouse (assuming you're right-handed), so you have to make sure the power cable doesn't find its way into the mouse movement zone, eg by coiling it behind something. If this socket was on the left or back it would be better. And you'll need it plugged in most of the time as the battery doesn't last long (especially when gaming).
The above issues push me down to 4 stars instead of 5. But overall I'm still happy with it as a replacement for my old desktop tower -- the issues have workarounds. I just wish the keyboard was a bit better.

I purchased this to use a a video editing/rendering machine, gaming, and entertainment center while on the road. I love ASUS quality, I have built 2 home pc's based on ASUS mobo's, the quality/performance of those has led me to purchase two ASUS laptopps, a Core i3 machine for my wife, and this Core i7 monster. This thing renders DVD/Blu Ray videos much faster than my AMD Phenom 965 quad core based home PC without breaking a sweat. Brilliant display, good layout.
It is heavy, but that is expected for the hardware inside.
I am still playing with the 3D capability. The demos look great, but the only movie I have tried did not work as 3D (Imax Hubble Blu Ray).

Comments about ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-DH73-3D 17.3" Notebook Computer:
I recently lost everything in a fire and wanted a powerful computer to handle Photoshop, music editing, and gaming instead of the multiple computers I was using. That's exactly what I got. I was considering a 17" MacBook Pro, but quickly abandoned that idea. The MacBook Pro was more expensive, had less memory, smaller and slower hard drives, and no Blu Ray. Even the lesser Asus models smoked the MacBook on specs and price, but I went with this model because of the features.
This laptop is HUGE and pretty heavy, which is no problem for me.
It has two 750GB hard drives that are basically partitioned in half (the main drive was partitioned into 3 sections for some reason). I didn't realize this until after I had loaded my Poser runtimes onto the C drive and quickly ran out of space. Had I realized that was the case, I probably would have taken other measures before installing a bunch of software.
The computer runs cool because of the huge vents on the back of the computer. My HP 17" laptop was constantly overheating and shutting down because of the poorly designed vents.
I also love the look and feel of this computer. It looks like a stealth bomber and has a rubberized texture which makes it feel very durable. The mat screen is nice on this model and is very sturdy.
I've read complaints that the keyboard takes a bit of getting used to. I haven't had any problems with it except that the delete key needs to be pressed in the center or it sometimes doesn't respond. Because the computer is so large, the keyboard is pretty spacious.
I haven't had much of a chance to test the battery life, but that's honestly not why I bought this. I really wanted a portable desktop, so I'm planning on plugging it in wherever I go. So long as I can get a few hours of charge, I'm fine.
Graphics programs like Photoshop and Poser run great, and Skyrim looks beautiful. You must use the w a s d keys or the arrow keys instead of the number pad. That's not really a problem for me because I'm right handed. If I were to use the number keys and the mouse, I'd be too far to the right of the screen to play comfortably. Having said that, I'll probably get a wired 360 game controller.
The included backpack is nice, though it could be a bit deeper. It will hold the computer nicely, though a bit tight on the corners, but the other pockets aren't very deep for accessories.
The included USB mouse is a nice accessory.
