The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera & G VARIO 14-42mm Lens Kit (Black) provides you with a remarkable duo. You'll be the proud owner of a stellar Micro Four Thirds camera and an impressive 14-42mm zoom lens, a great overall lens for most shooting situations. Other highlights of the lens include silent auto focus and exposure control for video recording, MEGA O.I.S., Contrast AF system support, and more.
The GX1 embodies the hallmarks of a Micro Four Thirds camera - a compact body (thanks to its mirror-less design), stellar resolution with the 16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor, and the aforementioned multiple lens compatibility with LUMIX G and Leica DG lenses. Additionally, the Venus Engine provides for fast processing of files, noise reduction, and smooth operation of the camera's many modes. The GX1 also boasts a sleek design with easy to operate dials and buttons. Other design considerations include the 3.0" touch enabled LCD, the built-in flash, and the right-side grip.
The shooting functions of the GX1 are centered around the ultra high-speed, ultra-precise autofocus options. They allow you to take accurate, in-focus photos, without having to manually focus, with an emphasis on motion photography. This is evidenced with the 0.09 second Light Speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by syncing the lens and the sensor at 120 frames per second. High-precision Contrast AF grants high accuracy, even when shooting at small F value, because focusing is controlled by the image sensor. Additionally, you can use Full-area Focusing with Touch AF, which allows you to set focus on any point in the field of view using the touch screen LCD. Other AF features include Pinpoint AF options, Touch AF in video recording, a flexible AF/MF mode button on the camera, and high-speed consecutive shooting.
Like its predecessors in the Micro Four Thirds genre, the GX1 also captures high def video. Boasting 1920 x 1080 HD video in the AVCHD (MPEG4/H.264) format, the camera produces movies that look great on HDTVs, HD monitors, and the like. Within the video features the camera can do a number of useful, fun, and creative things. One such example is its ability to capture 11.5Mp stills from video. Others include high quality sound with the Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Touch AF for video recording, multiple creative controls and photo style options - including miniature effect, and Intelligent Auto Mode, which takes the guesswork out of capturing video. Of course, the in-camera editing options and the included software allow for manipulation, sharing, and more.
Numerous other features give you a creative edge when shooting with the GX1. These in-camera features and functions help you take normal snapshots and turn them into unique works of art! The aforementioned Creative Control mode works with still photos as well as video. Enjoy the options within this feature, including Expressive, for a pop art style, Retro, for the appearance of a tarnished photo, Sepia, for an antique look, and Toy Effect, which creates the same type of vignetting produced by a toy camera. Other options are available with this feature too. Additional functions of the camera include Touch Defocus Control, for artful focusing, and Photo Style, for manually choosing from 6 color types, among others.
Flow of the Dust Reduction System:1. Power off2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera & G VARIO 14-42mm Lens Kit (Black):
After buying increasingly more expensive point-and-shoots, I was frustrated by the quality of indoor low-light shots without a flash and decided to spend the money for a Micro Four Thirds. After using it for a weekend, I am very impressed. The quality of pictures is far beyond the best point-and-shoots I have had, both indoors and out. The pictures with the Vario zoom are excellent, but for indoor portrait-type pictures, the pancake 20 mm f/1.7 lens is even better. So far I have only used it like a point-and-shoot, with the "Intelligent Auto" setting, so I can't comment on the more advanced features. However, I can say that even after spending only 10 minutes to scan the manual, it is possible to take some really nice pictures with this camera. Using it in the "Intelligent Auto" mode, it is fast and as simple to use as a point-and-shoot. I was hesitant to spend this much on a camera, but I am glad I did. I would probably recommend the power zoom version if you will be shooting a lot of video, because the manual zoom is sticky enough to be a little jerky, especially when zooming out.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera & G VARIO 14-42mm Lens Kit (Black):
This is a fun little camera. Takes great quality pics. For its size it fits well enough in hand. Material/quality feels fantastic.
I battled over the lens. I'd rather the more expensive, more compact lens for this form factor. This lens is a bit too bulky (although its still a good lens). I'll probably add a prime lens at some point.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera & G VARIO 14-42mm Lens Kit (Black):
Finally a 4/3's camera i can count on. I spent considerable time comparing to the Sony Nex 7 and picked the GX-1. Reasons:
Better resolving power on this 16MP sensor than the 24MP on the Nex 7
Quality of the build excellent
Grip is one of the best in the ILC camera categories
Great combination of buttons and Panasonics touch screen features ( im a big ipad user)
Better selection of lens options to choose from
About $300 less than the Nex 7 which immediately allowed me to buy another lens (45-200)
Although the Nex 7 has a tilt lcd, I find the optional EVF a better option with its 90 degree swivel ( and is 100% field of view)

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera & G VARIO 14-42mm Lens Kit (Black):
Could not ask for a better ILC, Great combo of dials and touch screen. Excellent build. Several hundred dollars less than the Sony NEX7 and still better resolving power from its smaller sensor than the Sony. I added the EVF which is a plus, it gives me the tilt and angle for shooting video and when lighting conditions are too bright for there LCD. If you want features this camera is loaded with them. Also Panasonic has a broader range of lens for their cameras. The zoom is perfect and compact for the focal length. I chose to not get the power zoom version. For video that would be fine but I shoot mostly photos and come from the old school, I like to control my zoom manually. Will be adding to this kit, the 45-200 and probably the super wide or fish eye.
