Bursting at the seams with features and functions, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver) wants to take what you think you know about Micro Four Thirds shooting, and turn it on its ear. The GX1 camera body boasts a number of built-in capabilities, not to mention compatibility with numerous lenses, including a 3D interchangeable lens. Additionally, in-camera editing and various other modes for producing professional-looking pictures, enhance the face value of this remarkable little machine.
The GX1 embodies the hallmarks of a Micro Four Thirds camera - a compact body (thanks to its mirror-less design), stellar resolution with the 16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor, and the aforementioned multiple lens compatibility with LUMIX G and Leica DG lenses. Additionally, the Venus Engine provides for fast processing of files, noise reduction, and smooth operation of the camera's many modes. The GX1 also boasts a sleek design with easy to operate dials and buttons. Other design considerations include the 3.0" touch enabled LCD, the built-in flash, and the right-side grip.
The shooting functions of the GX1 are centered around the ultra high-speed, ultra-precise autofocus options. They allow you to take accurate, in-focus photos, without having to manually focus, with an emphasis on motion photography. This is evidenced with the 0.09 second Light Speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by syncing the lens and the sensor at 120 frames per second. High-precision Contrast AF grants high accuracy, even when shooting at small F value, because focusing is controlled by the image sensor. Additionally, you can use Full-area Focusing with Touch AF, which allows you to set focus on any point in the field of view using the touch screen LCD. Other AF features include Pinpoint AF options, Touch AF in video recording, a flexible AF/MF mode button on the camera, and high-speed consecutive shooting.
Like its predecessors in the Micro Four Thirds genre, the GX1 also captures high def video. Boasting 1920 x 1080 HD video in the AVCHD (MPEG4/H.264) format, the camera produces movies that look great on HDTVs, HD monitors, and the like. Within the video features the camera can do a number of useful, fun, and creative things. One such example is its ability to capture 11.5Mp stills from video. Others include high quality sound with the Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Touch AF for video recording, multiple creative controls and photo style options - including miniature effect, and Intelligent Auto Mode, which takes the guesswork out of capturing video. Of course, the in-camera editing options and the included software allow for manipulation, sharing, and more.
Numerous other features give you a creative edge when shooting with the GX1. These in-camera features and functions help you take normal snapshots and turn them into unique works of art! The aforementioned Creative Control mode works with still photos as well as video. Enjoy the options within this feature, including Expressive, for a pop art style, Retro, for the appearance of a tarnished photo, Sepia, for an antique look, and Toy Effect, which creates the same type of vignetting produced by a toy camera. Other options are available with this feature too. Additional functions of the camera include Touch Defocus Control, for artful focusing, and Photo Style, for manually choosing from 6 color types, among others.
Flow of the Dust Reduction System:1. Power off2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image

I've used a Panasonic Lumix GF-1 for a couple of years quite happily, but found its low-light/ISO capability rather limiting for my principal interest of capturing family members and events spontaneously in a variety of circumstances, without the need for tripods, flashes, etc.
The GX-1 so far has proven to be a very nice upgrade, with usable ISO up to 1600/2000 and even 3200 at a pinch, and similar customisation available via the external buttons. I do miss the drive mode switch on the GF-1, but I'm pretty quickly coming to grips with the four way button/touchscreen option.
The camera is unobtrusive enough to take anywhere, and with either the 14-42X power zoom, or 20 mm prime lens, attached fits into a small leather belt pouch. Alternatively, a small Domke F-5XB bag easily carries camera plus power zoom (with LVF-2 viewfinder attached if necessary), 20mm and 9-18mm lenses, plus accessories like spare battery, SD cards etc. That's pretty good photo quality and versatility in a very light travelling arrangement.
What would make it better? A built-in EVF (although the GX-1 LCD screen seems a bit better in sunlight than the GF-1 screen). But I figure that will be a feature on my next replacement in about 2 years time!

This is my fourth m4/3 camera in 2 years ,after waited for 2 years for my previous GF1 ,[also bought two G3 ,one for my nefew and one for my girlfriend].
The Gx 1 use the same 16MP G3 sensor, little bit better noise on HI ISO 3200-6400 than G3, but color I prefer G3 better than GX1at the same setting.
one day i tried 3 of them to make comparison,[GF1-G3-GX1],.and i was disappointed with the result from this camera,..why,..?
In a GOOD LIGHT condition GF1 beat them[G3-GX1] on CRISPY AND SHARPNESS IMAGE,.I used 5 lenses 14-45,.7-14,.45 oly,.and both 25 mm F1.4 4/3 version+ m4/3.
Both G3 &GX1 have better clean ISO than the OUTSTANDING GF1,.but for Dynamic Range ,.I don't see any differences,..in fact sometimes GF 1 has better HIGHLIGHT & SHADOW DETAIL,.
,..the Most disappointing is THE UN-NATURAL AWB from GX1,.is really bothering me and it makes me want to re-sale my GX1 on internet..
the AF ,.GX1 s faster than GF1 of course,.
overall GX1 is offering you a good quality camera for a beginner,..but for some one who want an UP-GRADE ,.is not WORTH IT ALL,..FORGET IT,..
Just hope Panasonic makes a better camera as A PHOTOGRAPHY TOOL rather than a computer toy with a lens

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
Used to dabble in photography 20+ yrs ago but have been using Lumix point and shoots for years now because my 35mm and all the lenses ended up left at home. The GX-1 is a great tool to get back into real photography. It let's you do it all yourself, but easily displays what settings need to be changed to get a good shot and a single button press will make the change for you. You quickly learn how different lenses perform under different lighting and exposure conditions. iA+ is a great way to experiment. I also like the custom menus to quickly access options you are experimenting with. So far, all praise, no complaints.

Bought as a substitute for my Lumix GF-1. Surprisingly, it's significantly lighter , more resistant and a nice upgrade to more serious photography.

Plan to use it as a travel camera.
Smaller size, faster focusing.
Has touch screen and button interface--too early to tell how they'll work together.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
The higher iso rating of the gx1 is one of the two best upgrades from the gf1, the other being the added MP. The only thing I miss about the gf1 is that more of it's settings were accessible through the physical controls. My last critique is I wish the lumix series had image stabilization built into the body. not really a problem till you shoot video with an olympus or leica lens.
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase. I look forward to seeing how the micro four thirds format evolves.

This is a great camera: classic design, small scale but with the punch of a big DSLR. Perhaps the best/unique thing about the camera is the built-in flash. It is articulating so that you can point the flash upward to create a bounce flash. I don't know why other camera makers haven't done this. To my knowledge, Lumix is the only one.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
I previously owned the GF1 when it came out and loved that camera. Unfortunately, its successors didn't quite offer the customizability of the original. This GX1 is truly the successor to the GF1. The image quality and auto focus speed has improved quite a bit. The touch screen shutter release is a great feature as well. It makes a perfect everyday walk around camera due to the fact it's so compact. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking at a m4/3 camera, who doesn't necessarily need a EVF.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
A good compact and lightweight camera capable of producing very good results. Lots of lenses will fit it, and more all the time. All controls are where you expect them. Fast autofocus. Great for hikes and casual shooting. Very well put together, much better than a tank. Coupled with the 20mm 1.7 Lumix it becomes a compact camera whose image quality rivals my Canon DSLRs. Highly recommended.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
This camera is a nice compliment to my D300S. This is my vacation and walk around camera, and it is great with the 20mm f1.7. The camera has a nice, customizable control layout and the menu system is easy to navigate. The touch screen focusing is very good especially when you need to pick a subject carefully when shooting wide open. The IQ seems to be on par with my D300S but I've only taken a couple of hundred shots with it. It doesn't have the frame rate and AF speed as the Nikon, but the camera is very good for still shots.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):
The best new feature is the touch screen. You compose the image and then focus just about anywhere in the frame just by touching that area. You can have the camera fire automatically as soon as it achieves focus, or you can just pick an autofocus area with the touch screen then focus and fire with the shutter release. No need to focus and recompose. Fewer shots get away.
Of course, the camera can autofocus the usual way by picking an object on its own somewhere in the frame, but touch focusing gets the right object every time without using the menu or dials to pick an autofocus area if the camera picks the wrong one.
Compared to the GF1, the GX1 is a bit smaller, feels lighter, and focuses much faster. It has 2 customizable Fn buttons on the back that really reduce menu hunting. For example, you can set one to do flash compensation. No more hunting for the flash compensation menu while the subject gets away.
The new grip is a big improvement over the GF1, it feels more secure in your hand, though I prefer the heft and size of the slightly bigger GF1.
If they had only managed to include a built-in eye level viewfinder similar to Sony's or Fuji's, even if it meant a little more bulk and cost! I think that's what many enthusiasts really want, and the other brands that have them become much more attractive. I have the detachable finder for the GF1, but for several reasons it just didn't get used much, so I'll skip the finder for the GX1.

As a former GF-1 owner (both bodies now sold) I have been waiting two years for this upgrade. The speed difference in the auto focus alone is forth the price of admission. As a street shooter this is a huge factor.
My 45mm works so much better on the GX-1 it's like night and day as the focus is fast and snappy. I like the slightly smaller size too, and the construction is still rock solid. I have played with all the other manufacturers entries into M4/3 and thereabouts and for me the GX-1has the best software and image quality.

I am still on the fence with this camera. I have been using it for about a week, and I like the build and quality of the body very much. feels real good in the hands. also nice size. what I am not sure that I like is the image quality. do not see much difference between raw and jpeg files. Still need to do some more shooting so I can check out some large prints. so far I have only printed up to 5x7. all in all, I like the gx1,and will probably keep it. I bought the body only (silver) and it is a good looking body. Also got the lumix 14-45mm. seems like a decent lens. I am buying the 20mm 1.7 pancake tomorrow because I need a faster lens, but I really like the 14-45 a lot, good for outdoor photos. I normally don't write camera reviews, but as I am writing this review there are no others on b&h website for this camera. So what the heck.
