It was fast enough to get a crisp shot of sunset handheld. It also was able to keep focus on my speedy granddaughter in continuous mode in low light. I shot with my Nikon D700. The distortion is corrected in LR3 with one click, but sometimes I leave it because I like the effect. Overall I am very happy with it. It is small and light. I can see it being a staple in my bag.

I had a Sigma 15 to 30mm 3.5 which was a big, heavy lens that always got “Wow, look at that lens” type of responses. Not the type of attention I wanted walking in the park or while doing cityscape work at night.
Safety concerns aside there really are a number of other advantages to short, lightweight lens when you're running around festivals and events all day and night.
After much research on the 20mm 2.8 lens the finale outcome seemed mixed to me with most of the reviews leaning towards the “nice but buy something else”. I got one anyway for 3 main reasons:
1)I wanted small and lightweight – equal to or faster than 2.8 lens.
2)I needed an ultra wide 20mm ( somewhat wide 30mm on my camera)
3)I wanted to stay well below $1000 since I no longer work for a studio and I do this for fun and the occasional computer graphic work.
Here's what I've found about this lens on my D300:
There is a little light fall off at 2.8 but not enough to mean anything to me.
It does seem to be a little soft but in looking at the images I'm noticing some back focusing.
At 2.8 the center of the image is the best as the more you move to the edge the softer you'll get.
I got better than I thought hand held shots at 2.8 and 1/30 to 1/60.
When the camera is held level barrel distortion is not as noticeable as I was lead to believe although it is there. If you plan on using this for professional interior/architectural work you will need some software to help remove what little bowing is there IMO.
All in all I think it is a very good lens for the money when you look at what you get which is a small, well made, fast, bright lens, with very good color and contrast.
If you can live with or I should say learn to work with the “quirky” parts, it's a good lens.
It's not a professional lens but I'm not sure it was ever made to be a digital pro lens.

This is an old school wide. Slow focusing, a little soft at the corners, a little distortion but tack sharp and absolutely gorgeous bokeh. It is a great walk-around lens or low-profile, close-quarters option. I've taken a lot of great pictures with this lens...

This little ogre stays on my D80 90% of the time. I recently purchased a used D70 for my 85mm lens to minimize dust getting on my sensor. Wonderful lens. Functional in pretty much all settings. Great for architecture, landscapes, group shots and weddings. I am more than pleased with it and I must say it's a fabulous value. But then I'm a wide angle kinda guy. You need this lens in your bag. You won't be disappointed. I have nothing but praise for this gem. Nothing but praise!

Purchased for my son because he didn't own an super wide. Put this on my camera for about 8 shots before I gave it to him. Great lens, If you have a focus screw drive Nikon grab this little honey. f2.8 is great on a wide and focus is spot on and super fast.

I prefer primes at wide and standard angle and this is a strong, economical entry below 35mm. Sharp enough at f/2.8 and completely ready to rock at f/4. The build is solid and while I've only had the lens a week I can say it's performed well in both cold and rain. Light enough and easy to control.
On the downside, the AF can be a little slow. Manual focusers will have no issues.

I have a bit problem with this lens when using with flash for some angle with some glaring. The most part of this lens has been solid and very good with landscape, interior and group of people shot.

As a travel person, i believe that carrying too many lens and gears decreases the guilty of the trip or vacation. Although i do love to shoot photos catching the moments of happiness, the lesson from last trip to Miami, traveling with heavy gears only make you feel tired. No fun at all. That's why i recommend this lens as the best Nikon travel company. It's light and wide. The focus speed is fast as well. F2.8 is also a good atrraction to have it. No matter you are using Dx or FX cameras, it performs what a good DSLR should have. The only drawback for this is the sharpness needs to be improved a bit. However, as i said, its the best travel lens i ever had. Having a trip is definitely more important than shooting a lot good quality of photos but the trip uncomfortable.

Bought this lens in 1992. Back then its resolution was higher than any slide film that I could buy (may still be true today).
3 stars only because I am very disappointed with the aperture blades getting sticky over time. Nikon has "serviced" this 3 times and their charges have doubled my true cost of ownership.

I stepped up to a Nikon D3s in spring time and I find the 24-70 f2.8 heavy and big with it. Since I already had a 50 1.4G I was looking to get a wide andle lightweight prime so I went with the 20mm. No regrets at all, amazing how wide thing lens goes with a Full Frame body. Back from a trip in NYC and this lens is a must for travelling and cathing everything !

I'm a professional architecture photographer and bought this lens to make my life easier to shot interiors. It´s awesome. The little distortion is easy to correct using the specific profile in a post-processing software.

Comments about Nikon Super Wide Angle AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:
I sold my (awesome) 14-24mm lens and replaced it with this lens because it is so much easier to carry and handle. Its light-weight, takes up little room in my camera bag. It focuses fast on my D700 and is plenty sharp enough. It also takes filters.
It does suffer from vignetting below f4 and a little complex distortion but this is easily corrected in Adobe Lightroom (ACR) using the built-in lens correction feature.

Extends my all purpose 28-300 to cover wider angles . For DX format the 14-24 zoom would be perfect, although costing more than twice as much as the prime 20mm.

Comments about Nikon Super Wide Angle AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:
This lens is great. i have used it on a D7000 and a F100 35mm. though on some cameras it lacks the wide angle ability it gives a great crystal clear look. on my f100 the wide angle look is amazing. everything is sharp and you do not get the huge distortion like you would with a fish eye. all in all this a great lens especially as a person who loves the look and feel of classic old 35mm film cameras.
