The BarFly 400D Fixture follows in Kino Flo's long tradition of lightweight, low-profile lighting fixtures that offer flexibility, superior control features and unmatched accuracy.
The 400D features a 100 - 240V AC built-in ballast that allows you to use it anywhere in the world, as well as 5 - 100% dimming for the fixture's four 55W (not included) lamps. For maximum control and minimum color shift dimming can be combined with each of the 4 lamp's power control switches. Thanks to superior heat management design both the lamps and the ballast enjoy a long lifetime while reproducing color at an impressive 95 CRI when used with Kino's True Match lamps. Extremely low physical heat also means that you can squeeze the 4.5" deep fixture into places where a hot light can't go without fear of injuring the talent. And the 400D isn't an energy vampire like most hot lights, either. The fixture is brighter than a 1,000W tungsten soft light while drawing only 2 amps of power. The 400D comes with a 90° louver (grid) to add directionality and control spill light and a filter frame for light balancing and diffusion.

- Built-in Ballast
- The onboard ballast's unique design provides high output, flicker-free, dead quiet operation. The built-in universal power supply has an auto-sensing voltage regulator. It can be plugged into voltage ranging from 100 - 240V AC, so it can be used anywhere in the world.
- Dimming
- The built-in ballast also features onboard dimming control. Lamps can dim from 100 to 5%. However, it is recommended that the dimmer be used to adjust exposure levels within one f-stop. If dimmed beyond one f/stop, the color may drift towards the magenta spectrum. In addition to dimming, individual lamp switches can be used to adjust light levels. The combination of dimming and lamp switching gives maximum light control without color shift.
- Included Accessories
- The BarFly includes a 90° Honeycomb Louver. The Kino Flo specially designed metal foil Honeycomb Louver controls and focuses the light which narrows the light spread with minimal light loss. It is also available in 60° and 45°. The Gel Frame and Louver are held in place with accessory channels.
- Mounting
- The BarFly's center mount design allows unrestricted fixture orientation. The most recommended mount for the BarFly is the MTP-BL41 (mount with baby receiver). The lollipop has a 5/8" baby receiver which mounts directly onto a light stand. A safety loop provides an attachment point for a safety chain if the fixture is hung from a grid. The mount can also be removed so that the fixture can be hand-held or hidden in a space too small to place a stand-mounting fixture.
- Energy Efficiency
- The BarFly operates high output yet uses only 1/10th as much power to produce the same amount of soft light as incandescents. The BarFly 400D is brighter than a 1,000W tungsten softlight drawing only 2 amps of power. This is especially important when shooting on location and power availability is an issue.
- All-in-one Design
- The BarFly's metal alloy, all-in-one compact design is lightweight and incorporates a built-in dimming ballast with onboard dimming control and individual lamp switching. A remote dimmer accessory (DIM-5) can also be used when the fixture is hung out of reach. With universal input voltage from 100 - 240V AC, the BarFly can be used anywhere in the world. The BarFly comes with a built-in reflector, removable gel frame, and honeycomb louver and uses a removable center mount, sold separately.
- Long Lamp Life
- Lamp life of a compact fluorescent for the television and motion picture industry is determined more by its lumen maintenance than by its actual burn time. All fluorescent lamps display a lumen depreciation curve. This means that over time the light output gradually drops and lowers in color temperature. All fluorescent lamps require some "burn-in" time before they operate at their rated Kelvin temperature and brightness. For dimming products, the lamps perform best after 100 hours of operation.
- True Match Color Correct Lamps (Optional)
- True Match lamps are specially formulated to correspond to the spectral distribution curves of film and video cameras as well as look correct to the eye. They are designed to match the colors from quartz units or daylight sources such as HMI's. This gives the operator the option of mixing quartz hard light sources with fluorescent soft sources. Most lighting designers want the ability to use both qualities of light to enhance the set.
- Heat Management Design

In order to maintain a stable color temperature stability and best color rendering, the lamp requires:
- A cool spot at the tip of the lamp.
- Vertical orientation where the base of the lamp is above the lamp tip.
The BarFly design addresses these requirements:
- The lamps are properly spaced apart to maximize light output and minimize heat buildup.
- The reflector is vented in the back to increase airflow.
- The fixture is well ventilated at the lamp tips to minimize heat.
- The power cord is oriented in such a manner that the lamp tips will naturally be in the down position when operating fixture.
- Center Mount
- The BarFly uses a removable "twist-on" center mount with a 5/8" baby receiver. The universal mount has been a success in the 4Bank, Double and Single series and the Vista Single. The locking pin mechanism snaps into place with a simple twist. The center mount design enables unrestricted orientation allowing the beam to be angled in many directions. It's the same effect as rotating a barndoor on a Fresnel.

- Energy Savings Calculations
- With the push for reducing fossil fuel consumption, TV studios are looking at cooler more efficient lighting systems, like Kino Flo to reduce the costs and save energy. Part of this process involves generating energy values to determine savings. One of the most important values is Btu/kWh.

Any light generates a percentage of usable light and the rest in heat. For example, a standard incandescent light bulb converts only 11 percent of its electrical input into visible light, while the rest is dissipated directly as heat. There are energy costs involved in cooling the studio environment. The measure of Btu/kWh is a means of calculating the thermal loads related to operating lighting.
