The K-01 Digital Camera With 40mm Lens (Yellow) from Pentax joins the march of the mirrorless cameras with this advanced 16MP camera with a large APS-C-sized CMOS sensor. In a very compact body with a high-resolution (920K dots) 3" LCD, Pentax has provided a wide range of advanced features. The included 40mm lens (35mm equivalent of 61mm) is a wonderful all-around lens, with a f/2.8 maximum aperture and nine aperture blades; this lens is ideal for shooting in low light and achieving shallow depth-of-field for a wide variety of photographic purposes. This low-profile lens is only 0.36" long!
Full control is possible using the PASM modes, with a full automatic function available. The ISO range of 100 to 25,600 and a sensor-shift image stabilization system virtually eliminate blurry, shaky pictures forever. Full HD 1080p video at 30 fps is at your fingertips. The large APS-C sensor gives you superb resolution using JPG or RAW files, and creative filters, auto modes, and finishing options cater to your imaginative impulses. Shutter speeds from 30 seconds up to 1/4000 gives you all the exposure options you need, and you can shoot action at up to 6 fps-you'll never need to miss a photo opportunity waiting for your camera to catch up with you.
A built-in pop-up flash and a hotshoe expand your lighting possibilities. Advanced functions are built-in: a focus peaking mode that provides fast and accurate manual focusing for critical focus applications, and in-camera HDR that combines multiple bracketed user-specified exposures into a single, perfectly blended still image. The K-01 is compatible with Pentax K-mount lenses.

As the happy owner of a K20D and lenses for it, the K-01 is a perfect fit. It updates my DSLR in several vital ways (ISO sensitivity, peak focusing) and several fun ways (HDR, art filters) at a modest price. The display can be adjusted to work admirably in the brightest sun--and for those who have taken all their pics with a camera pressed to the eye--like me--it is a revelation to see a new perspective when arms are extended in various directions, particularly DOWN. The 40mm kit lens is the 40mm LTD slimmed down and bargain priced. Macro is MUCH easier with the K-01--if you have not seen peak focusing let me assure you it is a revelation for those of us who can't get the focus quite right on a ground glass. Image quality is on par with the K-5--uses the same sensor. HDR becomes fun rather than a hassle, and can be done hand-held in bright light. Wish it had a remote socket, but the 2-second timer does the job. And it is QUIET! Looks enough like a toy to get into a lot of museums that take a dislike to the K20D. I have tried all my lenses (10-17, 16-45, 18-55WR, 50mm 1.4, Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro, 55-300, 500 mirror)and they all work nicely. Long end of the 18-55 is sluggish, but it spins the 55-300 with authority right to 300mm. The K20D manages long lenses and dim light better than the K-01...and that is why I will keep it. The K-01 was not supposed to replace my DSLR--just update it and provide more picture taking opportunities. The Bumble Bee does this admirably. Oh, and i forgot--HD video too!

I find the K-01 to be a useful camera in all types of photographic situations.The fresh new styling is both a beauty to behold and to use. The quality of the images even in low light situations is breath takingly life-like. The 40mm XS lens is a marvel in size and performance. The controls are well laid out and the menus and the degree of customization available are truly top-notch. I think the best thing about this mirrorless (as opposed to all others)is that it accomodates all K-mount lenses without the need for a bulky expensive adapter.
