Touted as a provider of AV entertainment for the new age, Yamaha's AVENTAGE series takes this job very seriously. The AVENTAGE line represents a dramatic, inspired leap forward in audio/video component design. These receivers bring studio-grade sound and sophisticated video enhancement to your home with unparalleled attention to detail in design, engineering and fabrication. Yamaha has rethought every electrical path, part, piece and every material to maximize performance. These details at first glance might not seem to affect the quality of sight, sound and control -- but when brought together in an AVENTAGE component, produce a work of visual and acoustic art.
As a member of this highly esteemed line, the RX-A820BL A/V Receiver packs in several features that allow for exceptional audio and video reproduction to enhance your movies, music and games. It features A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) with a fifth foot in the center of the unit to dampen vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from your speakers.
Of course, the 7.2-channel RX-820 has all of the features you would expect from an A/V receiver in its class. It boasts eight assignable HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs, which carry 3D video, Deep Color, x.v. Color and allow for an Audio Return Channel. They can also upscale analog video to 4K/full HD 1080p for crisp, clear imaging from any source input. With built-in decoding for several high definition audio formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, you can enjoy true immersion in your entertainment.
This receiver also offers network functionality and support for AirPlay so that you can stream music wirelessly from your iPod touch/iPhone/iPad or Mac/PC. If you download the AV Controller App from the iTunes App Store or Google Play you can control power on/off, volume, input and DSP mode selection and more from your iPhone or Android phone. You can also operate various functions via the built-in web browser control. Another way it allows for exceptional audio is the Compressed Music Enhancer, which restores clarity to music files from sources like an iPod or CD player.
Finally, the on-screen advanced GUI (graphical user interface) allows for seamless, intuitive operation of your new RX-820. Yamaha's latest GUI has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable Status Bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures. An added convenience is the four SCENE buttons. All in all the RX-820 offers a solid design, network functionality and high-grade A/V processing that will allow it to power your home theater for years to come. Simply add speakers, a Blu-ray disc or DVD player and TV and your setup will be complete.

- The Anti-Resonance Technology Wedge is a 5th foot in the center of the unit which dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers
- 4K Pass-Through and Upscaling
- The HDMI input/output supports 4K video image pass-through. It can also perform 4K upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats
- Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing
- In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges, which causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally
- HDMI With 3D and Audio Return Channel
- This receiver is able to handle 3D data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable
- Network Functions
- A variety of network functions allow you to access more sources and enhance operation of the RX-A720. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller App (from iTunes App Store or Google Play) lets you control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phone. - YPAO R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) Sound Optimization
- YPAO R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds
- Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
- Enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This allows for a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is pushed toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the lower subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced, enhanced bass sound

- When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should
- Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment
- Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening
- HD Audio With CINEMA DSP and Virtual Presence Speaker
- CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speaker
- Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
- Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. You won't need to adjust the level of volume as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you don't want to disturb others
- Green Features
- Yamaha's ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20%. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu. Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours. Additionally, this receiver has a low power draw in standby mode -- 0.1 watt in IR standby mode, 3 watts in HDMI Standby Through mode, and 2 watts in Network Standby mode
- Intelligent Amp Assign
- This feature automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers, depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 7.1-channel system when zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the main zone. When zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in zone 2 and the main zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two front presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, the situation is reversed -- this way you don't have to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the speaker

The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on.
