Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Lee Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .45 (1.5 stops), .6 (2 stops), .75 (2.5 stops), .9 (3 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.

Lee graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.

Lee graduated resin filters are 4 x 6" (100 x 150mm) x 2mm thick. The 6" length allows for adjustment of the filter within the holder.

Neutral Density factors:

ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)

ND.45 (exposure adjustment = 1.5 stops)

ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)

ND.75 (exposure adjustment = 2.5 stops)

ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)

Comments about LEE Filters 4x6" Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Resin Filter - Hard Edge:

I've used Cokin, Hitech and Singh-Ray grad NDs extensively. None of them hold a candle to these Lee filters. Lee grads are the most neutral filters on the market, the size is perfect, great construction and excellent transition - not too sharp, not too soft.

Comments about LEE Filters 4x6" Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Resin Filter - Hard Edge:

I started out with Cokin P series with Lee Filters and upgraded to the complete Lee System. For wide angle shots you really need the wider filters. The .3 grad takes away one stop and is best for when the light is low. I've gotten some great shots with these filters and my photography has improved. You wonder why they are so expensive? They are hand made and the slightest imperfection, they are thrown out.

Lee filters are a good investment.

Comments about LEE Filters 4x6" Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Resin Filter - Hard Edge:

Does what it is supposed to do. Scratches easily, so you have to be careful. Noticed some issues with small scratches, straight out of the packaging, on the product I received. Could be a fluke, but I also purchased the soft edge filter and had the same issue. Not the highest quality available, but you get what you pay for. Still works for what it is intended, but I have to stay mindful of stray light that may leak through the scratches in the neutral density coating.
