Canon Close-up Lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 500D has two achromatic elements (the 250D lens also) to correct chromatic aberrations. It does not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element. The 500D is optimized for lenses of 70-300mm.
Note! For use with most EF lenses and PowerShot cameras. PowerShot will require Conversion Lens Adapter which is specific to each camera model

I do a lot of macro photography, particularly insects, and this lens combined with my 55-250mm EFS lens can make a quarter sized object fill the viewfinder. I wish I knew exactly what magnification ratios I'm getting, and what the minimum and maximum focus distance is. I know that this changes depending on the focal length, and that it can be calculated, but perhaps some kind of table of focal length, distance from subject and magnification ratio?
Anyhow, the lens is great. I notice no loss of quality in the color, light transmission, sharpness, or bokeh, from the original lens. In fact, the bokeh is improved, probably because the depth of field is so much smaller.
And the depth of field does get very small at high focal lengths, so it can be difficult to use if you want really close up shots, but under most circumstances, I find 150mm focal length (with an APS-C sensor more like 225mm) is the maximum if I want to have a comfortable depth of field at f/8.
Also, in case your worried, the autofocus on my camera was not affected at all.
The one bad thing about the lens is that, while the mount is firm, it is very difficult to find the threads. This can be an enormous hassle in the field. I definitely have a much easier time attaching my polarizing filter to the lens than I do the close-up lens.

Experimented inside, and followed the brief instructions on the sheet, but could not get it to focus on anything. Would be nice to have better instructions on how to use.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
An excellent and very reasonably-priced way of doing macro photography, with high image quality. The low weight and bulk are also a plus. You do (of course) lose infinity focus, and you also need to get the proper working distance to be able to focus correctly. A dedicated macro lens would be easier to work with and have higher image quality, but for those of us who can't justify a macro lens, it's a very good alternative.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
This is by far the best way to get a start with close-up photography. The quality of the lens is outstanding. It produces clear crisp close-up images. Keep in mind, this is for close-up photography, items in the distance will not focus. Also, be sure to check that this will work on the lens you want to use this on. I bought a separate lens specifically for this as I wanted a dedicated close-up lens. The weight will pull you telephoto lenses so be sure you have and use a lock on your lens.

I use this product to take Macro Pictures
It makes the picture sharp and crisp. An affordable way to take Macro pictures, but also works great on a macro lens.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
I have had so much fun with this lens. I'm still pretty new to photography so many of my pictures are not as good as I would like them to be, but some of the best have come with this lens. I use it with both my kit lenses 18-55mm and 55-250mm and get good sharp photos from each. Right now I don't want to shoot any thing but close-ups. Fun-for-the-money, this has been the best deal yet.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
The 500D close-up lens provides a great opportunity for macro/close-up photography at a reasonable price. While it appears to be a filter it is really a lens with excellent optical glass offering incredible sharpness. I use it in combination with my Canon 75-300mm IS lens. It has some heft to it but nothing compared to carrying an extra lens around. Works well with auto-focus but should be used on manual focus to get the most out of this lens. Very well built--a must for anyone who enjoys getting really close to their subject.

First off, this is not a substitute to a macro lens' capability of a 1:1 or 1:2 shot. It will get you a closer, fuller image without sacrificing crispness of the shot. And while it doesn't really give you the ability to fill a frame of a small insect with details the way a macro lens can, it does give you the ability to get a good, very macro-like shot when coupled with a telephoto lens. I always carry it with me even though I also have a Sigma 50mm macro so I don't have to change lenses when a shot only requires less than life-size image. I like it that it's a bit on the heavy side. For the prize, this is a winner. And oh, I actually used it with my macro lens and got me bigger-than-life-size images.

Using this with a 300mm zoom and the close up capability is fantastic. My 60mm macro doesn't fit current camera but this is an affordable way of getting some great macro shots! This is one of my favorite additions!

I use it with the Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS Autofocus lens taking flowers, insects, etc. hand-held on my Canon 50D. No problems at all using autofocus and IS. I can control my depth of field by adjusting the focal length. No complaints. It was recommended to me by a friend.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
A great way to take close-ups if you don't own a macro lens. Allows great versatility if you want to carry only one lens. Sharpness compares very favorably with that obtained with other macros. Continuous focus makes it much easier to use that extension tubes which require you to readjust the focus each time you change the focal length.

Pretty good value for the money. I use it on my EF 70-300mm. It looses some sharpness at the tele end. Focusing as close as almost a feet is possible. Manual focusing gives the best results although auto focusing work pretty well.

I use it with the 70-300 usm is lens for macro and also with the 100mm f2 for closeup. I also stack it on the 250D closeup lens with the 100 f2. In all configurations I get good resolution and with the 500D alone the corners are even pretty good. My camera is the Canon 20D.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
It can be attached to most of my lenses but was intended for my Canon 70-300 zoom. Focal lengths of over 150mm will lose some sharpness but are still usable. Image Stabilization functions perfectly and auto-focus will work too but don't expect miracles. Best to use manual focus at this level of magnification. Working distance seems to be about about 2 feet or less with the 70-300 zoom.

In January, 09 I just bought the Canon XSI, which I love, and with it I wanted to take those lovely close-up pictures of flowers, etc. that I see people take. Since I couldn't afford the micro-lens at this time, I bought this close-up lens & attached it to my 75-300mm glass. I'm still getting used to it but so far I am satisfied with the results of my picture taking. It certainly fits into my camera case w/o adding the extra weight. I will eventually get a micro-lens, but in the meantime, for the money, this works well.

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
I bought the 500D close up lens because I wanted more macro capability without springing for a macro lens. So far it has been used for some pictures of trilliums and blue bells. Portability is a plus, I wanted to take some shots farther away and just put the lens in my pocket until ready for it again. No worry about dust on the sensor changing lenses back and forth either. Focus distance was difficult at first but that will get better with practice.

I work as a wildlife biologist, and I use this close up lens to zoom in on insects, especially butterflies. It works amazingly well, and most people using macro lenses are very impressed. I use it attached to a Panasonic FZ-30 (19x optical zoom at 3mp), and I can zoom in real well to get great shots of endangered species.[@]

Comments about Canon 58mm 500D Close-up Lens:
After reading the glowing reports on this lens I decided it was a "must have" addition to my camera bag for my Fujifilm Finepix S9100. It has a 58mm front filter mount, so no adapters are necessary.
The S9100 has macro and a "super macro" setting. The "super macro" is rather silly, since the working distance falls to fractions of an inch in the extreme. What the 500D bought me was usable working distance. You can't photograph any living thing if you have to get so close you frighten it (or worse yet squash it with your lens). The 500D allows me to work at a reasonable distance with absolutely no visible degradation to the image quality.
One of the reasons I use the S9100 rather than an entry level DSLR is to travel light. The 500D meets my needs for a close up adapter that is barely thicker than my filters, yet expands my imaging possibilities greatly.
It's cheap, it works, and produces great quality. No downsides.

I use this lens attachment on a Canon 75-300mm telephoto lens in order to shoot macro photography. The results have been great, especially considering the price! My only complaint is that there is a limited depth-of field. If you want to get into macro photography but don't want to spend an arm and a leg on another lens, start here. You can kill two birds with one stone by getting a telephoto lens and this attachment.
