Canon Close-up lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 250D and 500D have two achromatic elements to correct chromatic aberrations. They do not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element, making it more affordable.
The 250D is suited for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 30 to 135mm. The 500D and 500 are geared for lenses with a focal length anywhere from 70 to 300mm.

I use this lenses in front of a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8G and a Nikon 70-200mm VR f2.8G. I bought it on a suggestion from an instructor in a workshop and had not used it until the Micro Nikon 105mm f2.8G rolled from my bag into surface water at a nearby Auqatic Garden - which survived well, with no reported problems from Nikon.
I am very pleased with the result. It is as sharp as the 105mm (before & after)and can get within 6-7 inches using the zoom on the 24-70mm but get a little larger angle of view than the 105. On the 70-200mm the closest is about 16 inches but the field of view is narrower and but still amazingly clear. It is always in the bag and I sometimes leave the 105mm behind if I am not absolutely sure I will use it. It comes in a nice sturdy clear plastic case. One con - be sure to just barely tighten it on the lens of choice because it is quite hard to remove after especially if used with a C-PL.

I've gotten some decent images, but this by no means replaces a good macro lens as it focuses over a pretty narrow range of distances from the object of interest. I will *not* be trading in my AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED which is absolutely superb.

Perfect for vacations. It's easy to use and an affordable way to carry a "macro" without carrying that extra lens.

A good product for quick and dirty macro. Easy to slip into a photo bag and always have with you for macro opportunities without needing to carry a macro lens (cheaper than a macro lens too). Image quality is good, though better results can be had with a dedicated macro setup.

This is a great lens to carry around for closeups without carrying a macro lens. Less weight for extended trips. Less expensive if you cannot afford a macro lens.

I use this product when traveling with an already overloaded camera bag. While it's not the same as a true macro lens it provides most of the benefits at a minimal weight and cost. Quality is outstanding (even using it with my Nikon lenses).

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
Very well built clear dual optic close up lens. It's heavy, but robust in a good way. Cuts the focal distance a little over 50%. Focusing can be a little difficult with handheld shoots or while shooting moving subject unless the f-spot is quite tight. Autofocus is variable depending on the lens it is attached to.

I decided to purchase this lens after attending a macro photography workshop. If you own the Nikon or Canon 70-200mm lens the 500D will provide you with excellent results. For the price point, the 500D is an awesome macro photography tool.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
I attached it to my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens for the close-up shot. The focus distance was reduced almost 50% so that I was able to be very close to the subject for the macro shot. The filter only takes very little space and much cheaper than the regular macro lens. Good for travel.

Although this accessory isn't small or lightweight in comparison to cheaper diopter sets, it is much better made and superior optically, and so is a convenient and credible substitute for a macro lens in my travel kit.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
I shoot nature photography - mainly with the canon 28-300L. Because of the weight of my existing equipment and the hiking that is involved with what I like to shoot (waterfalls, deer, flowers, frogs and etc.)I chose to buy the 500 closeup lens instead of carrying another macro lens . The main reason I purchased this addition was that it cuts the 2.5' focal distance in about half. I can shoot flowers, frogs & etc. set on 300mm at about a foot from the subject.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
Although I have only had this close-up lens for a couple of weeks, I highly recommend it as a substitute for the higher priced Macro lens. I used it on my Canon 24mm-105mm L lens with my 7D body and once I got the correct distance for the subject with AF it has given me numerous tack sharp images.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
I had read several reviews of this lens but was still not really sure what to expect. After looking everywhere, B&H had the best deal, so I bought it and received it very quickly, even over a holiday. First impressions are that this is a well made, high grade piece of glass, which is what I have come to expect from Canon. I can tell (and feel) quality when I see it, so I was not disappointed here.I was most interested in trying this with my 100-400 IS and 70-200 f2.8 lenses. So far I have only had on my 100-400 and was surprised at how much the min focus distance dropped. This is similar to using my 100mm 1:1 macro in that the depth of field is extremely shallow, so I am experimenting with different aperture settings to see if I can increase the DoF more.Overall, this is a well made lens that does exactly what I wanted it to for the [$] I paid. It is heavy, and will definitely add weight to your longer lenses. The instruction manual is just a folded piece of spec paper, but there is little instruction needed for this lens. The concept is simple, and most of the other reviews here are accurate in my opinion.

This is a really useful item to have in the kit when working with the Canon 24-70 or 70-200 zoom lenses and you need to do close-up work. It avoids having to carry another lens.

I use the 100-400L zoom for wildlife photos but if I'm out with just that lens and want to shoot something closer...this is the easiest solution. I am pleased with the quality. It is about a 2 diopter lens.
Although I have the 12mm extension tube...that actually decreases magnification with the 100-400 lens. Another factor is when it is blowing and nasty out I do not want to remove my lens from the camera body...this is very easy to use and carry.

Comments about Canon 77mm 500D Close-up Lens:
While not quite as sharp as a dedicated macro, this lens works well with the Canon 70-200mm f4L telephoto using a 67mm to 77mm step-up ring. Magnification is from ~0.14 to ~0.64 with a working distance of 1 to 1.7 feet (~30 cm to ~50 cm). Note that the Canon documentation does not show this combination - they are apparently not aware that 67-77mm step-up rings exist.

I recently upgraded to a Nikon D300S with a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and was looking to add a quality macro/micro lens but found my budget did not allow for such a purchase this year. After reading many articles and talking to a few people the Canon 500D close-up lens quickly made it's way to the top of my quality and affordable list(sorry Nikon). After using it for my micro/macro sessions; the Canon 500D close-up lens met my expectation right out of the box. It produces top quality images and is very easy to set up and use. Nice 9" focus length.
