Sony's VCT-U14 is probably the second most important piece of equipment in your camera bag - second only to the camera itself. The VCT-U14 allows the full-size, shoulder mount professional camera or camcorder to be attached to a tripod's wedge-plate. The Sony plate has a quick release mechanism that allows for rapid mount or dismounting of the camera from the tripod.

If you have a camera that requires this type of Sony mounting plate, then you don't really have many options to choose from. There is a more expensive version called the VCT-14 that appears to provide the same functionality but has a shorter 90-day warranty. I have no regrets with the VCT-U14 other than it is as heavy as a brick and does add considerable weight. The weight is especially noticeable if you have a lightweight tripod. But I suppose the weight is due to the vast amount of metal used throughout the plate, which contributes to durability.
Because this plate is rather long, it gives me a greater forward-backward range to balance my camera on my tripod head.
I also intend to use this plate on my Jimmy Jib for accepting any standard ENG camera.
If you have a smaller camcorder with a standard 1/4" mounting thread, then I recommend that you look at the Genus GAP Adapter Plate. The Genus GAP mounts to the bottom of any camera with a 1/4" thread and allows you to mount to this VCT-U14 quick release plate. It provides a very secure and convenient quick-release mounting option. If you own several tripods and cameras, it's nice to have this common quick-release plate so you can interchangeably use any camera on any tripod you own.

We purchased this for our Panasonic cameras. The Panasonic product SHAN TM700 costs more then double.

Comments about Sony VCT-U14 Quick-Release Tripod Adapter:
I really like being able to go from tripod to Steadicam and vise versa so this unit is handy. However, there is a little bit of play when using a smaller camera like an EX1. Front to back is very solid, it's the side to side that was some play. I used to use one of these with a larger DVCAM rig, and there was almost no wiggle room. Very solid. Not the case with smaller cameras. If you need a totally solid mount, mount your camera directly to the dovetail that came with your tripod. Again, it's handy for moving to/from different platforms.

Once again B&H comes through. When my original 15 year old tripod plate gave it up, B&H had whay I needed in stock and was able to get replacement quickly. Didn't lose any work!!

This is a must have if you own the Sony Camcorder shoulder support. This does not come with good instructions but can be figured out very easily.
I would buy this again.

Its pretty good. But, like all of these, after a while, the little red thing breaks off. Which is to be expected. It seems like they all do that. I would recommend this for sure.

Although some parts of this mount are plastic it still feels like it is cast from solid steel. Works smoothly and is well finished.

This Quick Release Plate is a Sony Standard. I do production work all the time and these are long lasting & rugged. I have had this one about a month, but I have others in the studio that are years old and still as good as new.
