The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt Capture & Playback is an external capture and playback device that you can use table-top or 1RU rack-mounted. Featuring advanced versions of top quality connections, QuickTime and DPX codec compatibility, and compressed and uncompressed transfer capacity, UltraStudio 4K works direct with the widest range of video equipment and editing software and is one of the highest-performing capture and playback devices ever made.
It captures from your camera at a maximum of 2K resolution, but can play back at up to 4K, meaning that any 4K footage you may have on your computer from another input source, you can output for monitoring in full 4K on a separate display. 4K is handled by both the SDI and HDMI outputs, with the SDI processing it in 4:2:2 and with only two BNC cables as opposed to the common four. (The SDI ports are Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI.)
Among many features and qualities, you'll find up, down, and cross conversion, a built-in SD Keyer, and support for professional quality audio.

It additionally has high-precision audio that includes 2 channels of AES/EBU in and out with a sample rate converter on the input and output as well as 2 channels of XLR professional analog audio in and out. You can work with the widest range of equipment, such as HDCAM, HD-D5, HDCAM SR, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, HD receivers, HDV cameras, televisions, mixers and more. With built in Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI, you can capture and playback 4:4:4 video when used with decks such as Sony HDCAM SR, or view real time playback of 2K film resolution at 24 fps with Blackmagic Design's HDLink Pro.

Connect all your I/O devices with 3 Gb/s SDI, HDMI, and analog video in and out, as well as 16 channel SDI audio, genlock and tri-level sync, and serial deck control. The Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI connections easily handle 4:4:4 video, 1080p60 frame rates and dual stream 3D stereoscopic capture and playback. Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI allows a new video standard for handling 4:2:2 4K playback for monitoring. Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI processes 4K with only 2 BNC cables, instead of the 4 BNC cables required in the past.
QuickTime and DirectShow Software Drivers
UltraStudio 4K works with the widest range of video software because of DirectShow and QuickTime compatibility. QuickTime and DirectShow are frameworks within Mac OS X and Windows operating systems that let application software capture and playback via hardware cards. Once a card is QuickTime or DirectShow compatible, then it's also compatible with hundreds of software utilities, ranging from large editing software to small custom utilities. Unlike expensive prebuilt systems, with QuickTime and DirectShow compatibility you have the freedom to configure your system exactly the way you want!

In addition to a clear LCD screen that lets you see at all times the video you're outputting, UltraStudio 4K features a comprehensive set of video, audio and control connections as well as convenient power and software update ports.
Video Input Buttons
Quickly select your video input between SDI, HDMI and analog video. Buttons are illuminated with a clear white light when selected.
Audio Input Buttons
You can select SDI video with embed for SDI audio. Audio input is independent from video for flexibility.
Built-In Power Supply
International power supply is built-in so you don't need expensive power supplies. Works from 110 to 240V.
RS-422 Control
If you're connecting to broadcast decks then the RS-422 control allows frame accurate capture and playback and batch capture.
Thunderbolt
Incredible Thunderbolt connection at 10 Gb/s to your computer. You can even use the new long 30 meter Thunderbolt cables.
USB
For adding software updates or when things go wrong the built in USB port lets you update software and add new features.
HDMI Input and Output
When connecting to televisions, set top boxes, projectors, computers and even gaming consoles you can use the built-in HDMI.
Reference Input
Reference supports both Black Burst and HD Tri-Sync for when you're connecting to large systems or production switchers.
NTSC/PAL Input
When capturing from older composite equipment you can use the composite input.
Component Input and Output
High quality analog component inputs and outputs are included that switch between HD and SD.
SD/HD/3G-SDI
Dual Link 3 GB/s SDI input with loop output and Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI outputs are included. Switches between SD, HD, 2K and 4K.
AES/EBU Inputs and Outputs
Television industry standard unbalanced AES/EBU input and output also connects to SPDIF equipment.
Stereo In
HiFi input allows you to capture from consumer products such as gaming consoles and set top boxes.
Timecode Input and Output
Capture timecode with your clips from RP-188 HD-SDI or use the timecode input for software that supports this feature.
Audio Inputs and Outputs
Balanced XLR analog audio inputs and outputs are included for connecting to professional analog audio equipment.
