The ultra-fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes this lens a great choice for low-light photography, and when shot wide open, is capable of exceptionally shallow depth of field.

The speed of a lens describes its maximum aperture. The larger the aperture, the more light it lets in and, therefore, the faster the lens. At f/1.8 this lens's speed opens up new opportunities for low-light and high-speed shooting.
