I bought a Wein HS flash slave. Beware! They do not work with hotshot flashes (I tried Nikon SB-600 and SB-800). The reason is that they expect the level of light from studio strobes. The small amount output by hotshot flashes is not enough to trigger them.

Alas, this works perfectly. I have successfully shot three four light studio setups with this item. Finally! It is perfectly sensitive to the level of light from typical hotshoe mount accessory flashes like my Nikons. Note, it picks up manual (single pulse) flashes (which is fine, that's what I wanted for studio setup). It has very wide angle of reception. I had it contorted around for my hair light and it was 100% reliable (always fired). Note I was shooting in a close, low ceiling room and my main flashes which were triggering it were inside umbrellas about 6 feet away. It worked first time every time (again, manual flash mode on my trigger flashes, no TTL pre-flashes). The flash attached to it was also on manual.

Also good...tightens well with hotshoe (I use a hotshoe umbrella adapter). It is the product I have been looking for to trigger my SB-600 manually since it cannot be triggered any other way manually (can only be triggered by TTL pre-flashes and has no sync port).

These are great, when they work, but I have had a lot of trouble getting them to fire consistantly in my studio lighting setup. I'm considering trying another brand/type of slave for my speedlights.

This is inexpenxive, but seemingly reliable in limited, early use.
I could not get this to fire a Nikon SB900 (although I haven't yet researched this issue), but it worked well enough on an SB800 and Mecablitz44.

Good quality slave for use to trigger other flashes. Not suitable for pre-flash type units.

Robust construction and provides good fit. Semi-opaque casing allows omni-directional light detection. Works reliably.

I bought this unit to use with a canon 550ez flash I had. It doesn't work with the canon flashes. The sensor blocks the flash from fitting. The unit works with an additonal flash I have that is not a canon. I wanted something that I could trigger an additional flash to light a background or use as a hair light. I will be buying another 580EX as soon as I can afford it.

This small rugged little device frees you from coiled PC wires and the limits they put on flash placement. It reliably fires an off-camera flash under most indoor conditions, and from 50 feet or more outdoors! The bottom line is a HUGE increase in possible lighting options. It gives you the means to use a simple 3 light modeling set-up.

The other posts make no mention of this adapter being able to fire one strobe via the hot shoe itself and another through a standard sync cord connection. I find this very useful when placing a background light behind a seated subject which would be out of the path of an optical sensor.

I know everyone was saying it does not work with Canon flashes and it's probaly true for the newer speedlites that have adjustable settings, but I used the shoe with an old Canon speedlite 200E that came with my old rebel, and it worked perfect. The pick-up worked great even for back lighting, and the trigger is instant. I am very pleased.

I just received, mine today, the first thing I did was to put an old Speedlite 200E, from my old 35mm rebel eos on it and test fired with my 40D built in and a 580exII, slave worked every time, about 2-3 sec, the time it takes the 200E to recharge. The flash was right on, no lag time. It works well with older non adjustable canon flashes.

THIS IS AN EXCELENT PRODUCT, PRICED WELL AND WORKS PERFECTLY. AFTER MOUNTING IT ON THE MOUNT AND UMBRELLA I BOUGHT FROM B & H, I TRIED THE SLAVE OUT AT MANY DIFFERENT ANGELS AND LOCATIONS FROM MY CAMERA STROBE AND IT FIRED EVERY TIME. I ALSO TRIED IT WITH THE SLAVE BEHIND THE UMBRILLA, USING THE UMBRILLA AS A DEFUSSER AND WAS 10 FEET AWAY AND THE SLAVE STILL FIRED PERFECTLY. IT IS A GREAT PRODUCT AND PRICED AT A VERY GOOD PRICE. [...]ONE FURTHER THOUGHT ON THE TRIPOD MOUNT, IT IS A GREAT PRODUCT AS IT IS REVERSIBLE DEPENDING ON HOW YOUR GOING TO MOUNT IT AND YOUR UMBRILLA ON YOUR TRIPOD, AND IT ALSO HAS A REVERSABLE BUSHING WITH TWO SIZES OF THREADED MOUNT BUSHING MAKING IT EASY TO MOUNT ON MY EXISTING TRIPOD. I AM VERY SATIFIED AND WOULD RECOMMEND B&H TO ANYONE. GREAT JOB B&H.

Comments about Morris Popular Shoe Slave Adapter:

I have two old flashes that have been sitting in the closet for years. I've been reading up on "taking the flash off the camera". I thought I'd give these flashes new life and purchase the Popular Shoe Slave Adapter.

First off, it's small, the size of a matchbook. It definitely has all it's electronics inside a see through plastic type case. The shoe mount for the flash is metal though.

I tried my Canon 430 EZ flash that I've had since 1997. Unfortunately, on Canon flashes they have a front lip (where the Infrared window is located) that comes down, where it blocks the shoe adapter from fitting correctly. That was a bummer.

Then I tried my oldest flash, a Sunpak 266D that I've had since 1993. The Popular Slave fits nicely with this flash.

I placed the flash 10 feet off to the side (indoors), fired the built in on-camera flash from my Rebel XTi, and the slave flash fired in unison. From the digital image playback, I can see the slave flash is firing correctly and in time with my built in on-camera flash.

I am elated that I can bring back to life one of my old flashes again.

*I have not tried it outdoors yet*

Note: Be sure to disable any pre-flash features, which would cause the slave to fire prematurely. Not recommended with Canon Flashes, due to physical design of flash units unable to fit this particular shoe slave adapter. (I also have a Canon 430 EX and a Canon 580 EX, and they both have the same design feature as the 430 EZ)

I bought two of these to use with my Canon 430EX Speedlights, not realizing at the time that Canon Speedlights lock up after one flash when used with triggers like these. Do not buy these for Canons.

However, determined to use off-camera flash, and having the need of two smaller easily moveable lights in studio, I purchased two Vivitar 285HV's. Presto. These work great in the studio. I have yet to try them outside. Very reliable so far.

Having two very light battery powered light sources is great. If you have ever shot 6-month-old babies before, you know what I'm talking about. They move faster than anything and keeping them lit can sometimes be a challenge. These allow me to modify lighting very quickly as the stands with the Vivitars are not tied to anything, and are very light.

They have been very reliable, though they are all plastic but for the shoe and I do not like to take them on and off for fear they may break. The mounting is plastic and kind of cheap.

But at this price they are great.

Comments about Morris Popular Shoe Slave Adapter:
