The B+W 39mm #16 Yellow-Orange (040) MRC Filter is a basic contrast filter, primarily for use with black and white film. This orange filter noticeably darkens skies, helps to cut through haze, and improves overall contrast. When compared to the yellow #8 filter, the #16 creates a greater separation between clouds and sky and further lightens yellows and reds within the scene.
The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.
B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Comments about B+W 39mm #16 Yellow-Orange (040) MRC Filter:
I have pared down all of my B&W contrast filters to include just this one; a happy median between the yellow (often not dramatic enough) and the red (often too dramatic or causes a loss of resolution). B+W MRC are widely considered the best filters available, so that's good enough for me.

Comments about B+W 39mm #16 Yellow-Orange (040) MRC Filter:
I use this with my 35mm Summicron and it really makes the clouds pop from the blue sky. I have used red in the past, but I thought it cranked up the contrast too much and destroyed shadow detail. Be sure to use it in on a mostly sunny day, with few clouds. I found that using it with a sky with a lot of clouds gave an uneven effect. I also try to avoid using it with Tri-X, since Tri-X already has a lot of contrast.

I purchased this item to use with my Leica lenses for black and white photography. It's strong enough to cut through haze and add enough contrast without being overly dramatic.
