I've been shooting for 40 years in several formats-- Mamiyas, Rolleis, Monolta, Nikon -- and this is a terrific lens for the money.I bought this lens simply because I did not have a fast prime lens in my stable; it it did not disappoint. Shortly after I acquired the lens I was shooting an evening indoor event with moving subjects and I did not want to annoy them with a strobe. This lens performed beautifully. Sharp as a tack at around F2.0 - 2.5 and 1/80 or 1/100 second. Of course, my depth of field was minimal, but was helped by the fact to the fact I was about 15 to 20 feet away. If I were any closer depth of field would have become a bit of a problem. The lens focused extremely fast on both my D70 and F100 and did not "hunt" even in the less than ideal available light. It's very light and easy to use.I wish it had a nine bladed iris rather than 7, but the out of focus areas still look pretty good. Here are a couple of good review online:[@]

I usually shy away from primes, but the small size and large aperture made this one appealing since I shoot at crowded club events. After a few weeks of use, I find that the lens is very sharp stopped down to F/2.8, but at 1.4 images are very soft. Focus is accurate and fast, a definite plus, but that's where all the good ends. I'm disappointed with the build quality as the lens just feels too plastic. It just doesn't compare to any of the newer nikkor primes, such as the 60mm AF-S or the 85mm PC-E. Also, the bokeh is a bit harsh due to the 7 bladed design. The lens is prone to CA and flaring, so you have to be careful when shooting in certain conditions. Overall, I'm not too impressed, but the small size and speed of this lens makes it useful for club shoots. Nikon seriously needs to update some of there primes and this lens would be a good start.

Very pleased with this lens. THe depth of field is fantastic. Only thing I would change is the option for manual/automatic focus. This lens is strictly auto focus.

This lens is very sharp. It should be in everyones camera bag. We get use these days to zoom lens but putting this lens back in the camera becomes a new excersise in composition! I make a point now to use it more. I love it in my m43 camera with the proper adapter for night shooting or low light.

I have been a medium format shooter for years and my lenses have all been German. Because of my work and experience, I have very high standards. All in all, I found that this lens performed very well under a variety of situations. Something that I am not used to as a medium format shooter is shooting at 1.4 and this has proved to be really enjoyable in those low light environments. I would say this lens is worth the investment...

Used this lens for the first time at a family gathering. Lots of shots in all kinds of light and situations with excellent results. Did think it was a bit slow on focus, but am also shooting lots of sporting events with another lens, so am used to that timing. Excellent lens!

I purchased this lens for portraits particularly for wedding portraiture. It is lightweight and a good build quality. The sample that I received was not sharp until f/2. I also own a 50mm 1.8D that was noticeably sharper than this lens at 1.8 and is a much better deal at $200 less.

I am no pro, big hobbyist.
I started the hobby with a zoom lens, and I upgraded one zoom lens after another until I hit the prime lens and bammmm! super nice bokeh, fast, cheap, light and i just fell in love. I love taking pictures of family using primes.
Ok this 50mm 1.4D, fastest lens for the money (vs 85mm, 35mm). Small, easy on the neck, quite ok plastic built, super sharp at 2.8, great in low light. With this I never have to worry about there's not enough bokeh, or the light is bad, just shoot. Want things sharp with bokeh, go to f/2.8. Want super sharp, go to f/4. Want to play with creamy, go to f/1.4. Love it love it.
The only sad thing is, it wont work with my wife's cute d5000. So she has to stick to her 35mm 1.8G. But hey! AF-S means 1 more part to break down right? Images are probably similar to 50mm 1.8D, but the 1.8 is made of even flimsier plastic. I might try the 50mm 1.4G for a bit more money later on, but for now, this is awesome. The colors are great. Portraits are lovely. If you cant justify the small speed difference, the 50 1.8 is great too.

Have been using the zoom lens that my D90 came with and needed something better for family photos that does not take as long to focus. This is the lens for it, although you do not get the close up shots the quality of picture is there with this lens. Definitely recommend it if you want quality color, definition, and total picture!

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
I utilize this fantastic piece of glass for every kind of situation I come across; weddings, portraits, natural light, studio work, street photography and video. It's fantastic at sunset when shoot portraits.
Pros: Very sharp wide open, allowing for excellent close ups and a razor thin depth of field. It's focusing is faster than the newer G lens because it uses the in-camera focus gear. When focusing manually the rubber grip allows for easy, smooth, precise focusing. Shot at f/1.4 the bokeh is gorgeous, as the background completely disappears into a nice, aesthetically pleasing blur. Naturally it's perfect for lowlight photography. A small profile allows inconspicuous shooting on the street or in candid situations.
Neutral: I love the lens flair given off when shot into the sun, but some people might not care for it.
Cons: It doesn't work on cameras without the internal focusing gear. And that's the only con I can come up with.

I'm using this for shallow-DOF photos of flowers, pets, and people. It creates beautiful bokeh. It's a great lens for these uses. After using a 18-200mm zoom, this lens is light. Auto-focus is quick.
If you shoot out in bright light, you may want to consider an ND or polarizing filter to go with this. I have had to close down my aperture a little on a few shots where I really wanted shallow DOF, because there was just too much light.
