The ATH-D40fs stereo headphones from Audio-Technica provide pro-quality audio in a lightweight and comfortable design. The headphones feature 40mm neodymium drivers with copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils to produce a bass-enhanced frequency response that's ideal for mixing and monitoring low frequency sound sources. High-quality components give the headphones very high SPL capabilities.

The closed-back design and around-ear cushions provide a snug and comfortable fit that also blocks out unwanted environmental noise. The earcups also have a swivel mechanism for convenient single-ear monitoring. The padded, adjustable headband provides a secure fit that will keep you listening for hours. The single-sided OFC cable has built-in strain relief and is 11' long to provide plenty of slack. The standard 1/4" stereo plug lets you connect to virtually any professional audio device. These headphones are also field-serviceable, letting you easily replace the drivers, cable, and ear cushions when needed.

I've used these in my professional recording studio for years because they provide accurate sound while taming feedback when recording vocals. The closed design works well with talent that want their headphones loud when recording voice-overs. We used to use AKG KM240's for their clarity and comfort, but had constant feedback problems. Also, the talent love the comfort of these. When recording audio books, which require long hours over several days, no one complains with these.

A plus is the sound quality of these. We use them for sound checks, and occasionally mix with them. While not on par with upper end pro headphones for fidelity, they can certainly be used for reference because of their flat response.

One weak part of these are the swivels for each cup. They often break if they are rough-housed or dropped. The other weakness is the leather/plastic ear cushions. After about 7 or 8 years they will start to flake and come apart. But hey, it's time for new headphones by then anyway if these get a workout like they do in a pro studio.

These are one of the staples of pro studios everywhere because of the price to performance ratio. You should consider these as well.

Whole thing is plastic and fake leather. Hard to keep on head, as they are slippery. Don't like the adjustment on ear cups/head band - it doesn't "click" when you adjust the size, just slides...doesn't stay on my head well. Didn't come with 1/8" adapter which I think is cheap.

These are great sounding headphones but if you are a guy who shaves your head, you'd want to look at another model. The stubble on my head would tear/shread the earpads

As a 41 year broadcast professional, not only are these the best sounding, most comfortable headphones I've ever owned, BUT, the price is OUTSTANDING. I priced a set locally thru a supplier that works closely with our radio cluster in Dallas, thinking I could save money. WRONG.......the exact same set was $30.00 MORE !!B & H ROCKS !

I bought these to have top-notch headphones that won't bleed through out to my mic when I'm podcasting as is the case with my AKG-701s I previously had. Very happy with them.

I bought these a few years ago because so many different people in the pro audio world had recommended them. Before this I had used Sony 7506 and AKG 201s. The ATH-D40fs are just as good of a quality reference headphone monitor as those costing three times as much. They have a big + full sound, and you can use them during tracking and mixing of new music. They're also great DJ'ing headphones because the cups swivel and they take a real beating and never break. The only problem with them is that the jack is a full 1/4" rather than an 1/8" miniplug with an adapter. It's nice that you're getting the full 1/4" unadpated sound, but having to fish around for a clunky 1/4" to 1/8" adapter when you want to plug them into a consumer device is a pain. But, they're such nice headphones at such an amazingly cheap price that I gave them a 5 star review anyhow!

I have used these particular headphones for approximately a decade.Comfortably padded and they fit my normal head size well, I've worn them for many hours at a time. They handle high volumes well (metal) with little distortion and if you somehow manage to blow out the voice coils or cut the cord it's all easily replaced unlike other headphones in this price range.Great quality on the cord, not one of those tiny little flimsy things (like Sennheiser has) that break easy, I've run it over many times with my desk chair while editing and it has yet to break. (I like the heavy cords on the BeyerDynamic phones too)The only possible con is that if you are used to Ipod type featherweight headphones these will seem a bit heavy until you get used to the difference.Professional quality and durability, these aren't lightweight junk that will wear out easily and they are priced far cheaper now than when I started using them.At [$] bucks they are a bargain.
