The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens is a wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens that features Nikon ED glass, aspherical lens elements and SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for enhanced performance. With a focal length range of 18-135mm, the lens is suitable for a wide variety of shooting situations; from sports, action and portraits to wide-angle landscapes. The picture angle is equivalent to a 27-202.5mm lens in the 35mm format.
The optical design features one ED glass element and two hybrid aspherical lens elements to assure high-resolution, high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion. The compact SWM built into the lens offers the smooth and quiet autofocus performance that users have come to expect from Nikon lenses.
Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Please see here for a list of compatible models.

I bought this lens based in large part on the testing and conclusions in this review: [@] write and shoot for a small town weekly newspaper. Most pictures I take are candids -- a lot of faces-n-places, some accidents and the occasional sports or beauty shot. Having one lens that can fulfill ninety percent of my needs, and leave no guessing about sharpness, edge-to-edge consistency and dependable perrformance is a plus. Add the light weight, low price and perfect match to my D40 and the 18-135mm is hard to beat. This lens shoots wide enough, long enough and fast enough for nearly situation our style of story coverage demands.Caveats? Yes. It is slow and, as a result, autofocus -- indoors and at night -- isn't lickety-split. It has no Vibration Reduction (VR) which means I won't be getting rid of my mono or tri pod any time soon. On the up side, no lens creep, it is quiet, feels durable enough for the day-to-day and produces clean, sharp, color-accurate shots. For what it's worth, I compared this lens side-by-side and shot-for-shot with 18-200mm zooms from Tamron and Sigma. The obvious image softness, distortion throughout the zoom range and uneven build quality in both aftermarket lenses left me wondering exactly what I would be spending my money on. Convenience? Yes, both the Sigma and Tamron offer an extra 65mm of reach, but both were soft and distorted at 18-28mm and above 125mm.Granted, the 18-135 doesn't have the cache' of Nikons 18-200, but it tests better and is a heckuva lot cheaper.

Great lens but...
This lens came with Nikon D40 kit Nikon D40 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA w/18-135mm - NID4018135 that I bought right here in B&H on 7/9/08 (10 months ago).
This lens came with Nikon D40 kit Nikon D40 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA w/18-135mm - NID4018135 that I bought right here in B&H on 7/9/08 (10 months ago).
I love the D40 and the lens' incredible range (from very wide angle to a decent tele in a relatively compact package. I used it all around, all over the place, came in great on vacations because I stopped carrying other lenses and cameras. It was such a versatile combo, I would find that even though I had packed other cameras and lenses the only one unpacked and used was the D40 and this lens.
However, a couple of months ago it started taking longer to focus and other times the photos were sharp, but not quite as sharp as they could be.
One day it started AF hunting to the point it just stopped focusing. It hunts for a long while until it gives up. I could use it in manual mode but it is hard to focus this lens manually in low lighting or close quarters. My other cameras/lenses have easier to focus screens that make it obvious when it is focused.
I thought I was the only having this problem until I logged in earlier today. I checked the D40 kits looking for reviews but found none with this lens. When I searched the full name/part number found that B&H has the kit listed as "discontinued". (cut and paste the kit part number and see for yourself).
The lens will be on its way to Nikon now for repair so no quick resolution to my problem. Yes I have other Nikon lenses but none will work AF with the D40. So I will probably pick up another lens for the D40 since the other reviews make it clear this is not an isolated occurrence.
I give it 3 stars because it was such a good asset when it did work.

A great lens for the money. I read Rockwell's website review and he kinda turned his nose down on this lens and recommened more expensive ones. He must have more money than he knows what to do with. For my money...this was a great bargin. Its fast and sharp, pictures look great. It does have a little lens creep if you point the camera straight down, but nothing I can't deal with. A great deal from B&H...I'm goon keep my eye out for more reconditioned lenses from them!

Not the best lens out there but so much better than the $99 kit lens shipped with most cameras.

Comments about Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S DX Lens:
This lens is great beacuse it covers a broad range from 18 to 135mm. This is unsuual in a lens that also goes this wide.
I'm even considering getting rid of my old 18-200 zoom and getting a longer lens since I now have over half of the distance covered with a lens at 25 percent of the cost with what so far appears to be very good quality.
I also got a great price on this lens since it was a refurbished lens.
It's weaknesses may be that it is not a new VR lens, but I'm using an older D200 body and have been shooting for many yaers and the VR was not that important.
The other possible weakness is that it is a 3.5 to 5.6 lens and so won't be as good under as low of a light situation. But again, most zoom lenses, even the new ones are 3.5s.
I would very much recommend this lens for general putpose shooting both indoors and out.

I was concerned with all the white box offerings on the web, especially with the prices being asked. When I saw B&H offering refurb units at even lower prices, I jumped right on it. The lense looks and operates just as you would expect a new one to look and operate and it was delivered overnight without asking for overnight. Will continue to buy from B&H and recommend you do too.

I would buy this product again. It is light and compact. Worked great for an all around lens. It is a little slow on cloudy days for action shots, but for anything else you are good to go.

I purchased this lens to replace the stock lenses that came with my Nikon in a kit. I am really loving it so far, it fits almost all of my shooting needs. So much, in fact, that I am considering selling one or both of my other lenses to put money towards upgrading the body of the camera next. I wasn't worried about buying a refurbished lens from B&H. It saved me money and it's just like new. I can't wait to use it on an upcoming vacation and after that, a wedding! Very happy customer. Thanks!

You will not need another lens, except for extreme wide angles and very long distance telephoto work, or in very low light situations. It is well made but the lens will sometimes extend or creep when facing down, due to gravity. If you are aware of this you can control it. When using the camera's pop-up flash you cannot shoot wider than 35mm as the lens body and hood blocks part of the flash and makes a black shadow at the bottom of each frame. Removing the hood helps. Sometimes the autofocus "hunts" but generally it is very good. You can always switch to Manual focus mode. The lens is sharp and clear. I have been happy with it for over two years. I just bought a 2nd 18-135mm, this time to give my son for his Nikon on his birthday.

My old 18-135mm lens broke and I knew I could rely on B&H for a quality, used lens...and that is exactly what I got!

Bought the D80 kit and this lens failed right out of the box, all my other Nikon lenses work fine (35-70 2.8, 70-300 4-4.6, 300 4.0, 105 2.8, 16 2.8) so it's not really and issue but a quick search of this internet reviles that a lot of people have AF problems, while my seems to be the lens contacts not connect with the body contacts just inside the lens mount.

The optics are pretty good but I love the versatality that this focal length gives you. I can shoot basketball full court and get great action at the far end... I would love to have a wider lens but for now this works great.

Looking at the choices for a D60 for my wife, the kit lense 18-55 was too short for what I knew my wife wanted, the 18-200 was too heavy and would blow the budget (besides I have one already if she want's to use it). The 18-135 was just the right size.
My wife is very happy with it, and the pictures she is taking are quite a bit better than what she gets with a point and shoot.

This lens came with my Nikon D80(when they were still being made) and this was a great deal. This is the Swiss army knife of all lenses. It gives great constant output. I use this lens when im not sure what im going to be shooting and i always get great results with it. The 18mm is great for landscapes and general photo taking. The zoom up to 135mm gives you alot of freedom to "crop" easily and zoom in on wildlife or anything else your taking pictures of. This lens is amust have!

This is a great lens for when I'm walking about a lot and changing lenses isn't convenient; e.g., walking around NYC or, as last weekend, on a trip to Cape Cod with seven other people. Also when the weather is such that changing lenses is risky, such as a windy day on the Cape Cod dunes!

I use the product with my Nikon D300, and I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy the lens. I have a polarizer going as well to help me get some higher quality images and needless to say, it does the job to a "t." Nikon's glass has always been held in high regard in my book, and as always, this lens comes through with flying colors, literally.
