The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX APO Macro HSM telephoto zoom lens has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 which remains constant throughout the zoom range, improved optical performance, macro capabilities, and is optimized for digital SLR cameras. It also features super multi-layer coating, which reduces flare and ghosting.
This Macro lens has improved macro capability, with a minimum focusing distance of 39.4" (100cm) and maximum magnification of 1:3.5. All zooming and focus movement is achieved internally, allowing for a constant length and great resistance to dust and moisture. It comes rendered in a hard coated, baked black EX crinkle finish.
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability for Sigma, Canon, and Nikon mount lenses.
This lens can also be used with the 1.4x EX or 2.0x EX APO Tele Converters (optional), becoming a 98-280mm f/4 autofocus telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm f/5.6 autofocus telephoto zoom lens respectively.

This lens is fantastic.
I have used a Sony 70-200G. It is a better lens, yes. But it is not so much better that I would buy it over this lens ($1000 US extra). I could have two of this lens and still have change.
It hunts a bit in really low light but then so did the sony (may be my camera or just a common thing with low light and 70-200 lenses).
The only slight downside is that the excellent tripod collar (twist the nut to loosen, pull the nut to release - best collar ever!) can make it a little awkward to use the zoom ring if you leave it attached for hand-held use.

I gave this 3 stars because i'm HOPING the copy i got was just a bad one. I received my lens (which I've been waiting for for about 9 months or so) and it focused slower than any other lens i own, and hunted in low light where my 70-210mm f/4 lens does not. Sigma seems to have a record of putting out a lot of bad lenses with it's good lenses. I've had the problem of getting a "bad copy" of a lens before when i bought my 10-20 as well, and have heard many people say "make sure you get a good copy of (insert lens name)" B&H has been more than helpful with this process and sent me a prepaid shipping label , but Sigma seems to be lacking a bit in the quality control department. So when you get the lens, if something doesnt seem right, chances are it isnt. Oh , and one last thing. Sigma left out the usual red bump to show you where to line the lens up with the camera, and replaced it with a very small (harder to find) white dot. Pinch lens cap is SO much nicer than the other Sigma lenses i've used.

I am using this lens on my Sony A55 and A100. The autofocus is extremely fast and silent. The images produced are beautiful with excellent bokeh. The only drawback is the weight, but for this type of lens the weight is typical.

I have the Sony a550 and this lens is much better than the Minolta 80-200. Faster focus and silent.
The problem is the zoom ring is blocked by the mount so zooming is difficult. So excellent for image quality but pain in the rear to use.

I use this lens to photograph my son playing football. I love the clarity of the pictures and speed of the shutter. I've taken some great action shots. The only con I've encountered is the heaviness of the lens. BUT, I must say that the great pics I have taken over ride the fact that it is heavy. I've used the pics I've taken to make slide shows and also developed pics. My friends can't believe I'm the one taking the great pictures! I'm very proud of my purchase.

easy enough to use. I have been taking photos of my kids football and soccer games. Both in daylight and twilight with a Sony A300. As an amateur in the field I am very happy with the results and would buy another lens of this make and also from B&H.

I waited for months for this lens and I am not disappointed. It is the largest lens in my collection (which takes a little getting used to) but it does what what I ask it to do. It is a little soft at 2.8 but is great at 4. So far I have used it for everything from flowers to portraits to soccer and it works well.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Sony Alpha:
When I first got the lens the thing I noticed most was the weight. Good thing I am a big guy. After shooting about 200 shots I thought the HSM was going out on me. What I discovered, after I felt like an idiot, is that if your battery goes below about half power it will focus slow or won't focus at all. Very minor issue as far as I am concerned. I just wasn't thinking.
Now for the good stuff, this was my go to lens for the Army's Best Ranger Competition this year. Through difficult lighting, fast action, and everything else thrown in, the Sigma handled it all. Now if only my camera could keep up. Right after the comp I went into the studio to test it out and I am beyond happy with the photos that it has produced. I can't see paying $1000 to $2000 more for the Sony, Nikon, or Canon name if you want a 70-200 f2.8. I have friends with those respective lens and you can't tell the difference in quality of the prints and I like the baked on finish as well. You would not be dissappointed with this one.
Oh, one more thing, I thought the focus out of the box was slow, well that's because the HSM is so quite that you don't realize the lens is focusing!

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Sony Alpha:
I bought this lens because I wanted to get better pictures of my kids playing basketball and doing gymnastics. Being unable to use a flash at these events, my pictures had been so dark and grainy. Now with this lens, my pictures have been dramatically improved! Having the f2.8 throughout the range allows the pictures to be light without noise. It focuses super quick. As long as I am aiming it correctly, it does not hunt for what to focus on. My pictures are sharp with no blur. The only negative that I have found, is that the weight does give your arms a work out! But for these quality results, I will take the work out. I have only played around with the macro, but that seems to be amazing as well. Great lens and well worth the money.
