Feeltune Rhizome Groove Production Hardware

Share

The Rhizome is an innovative groove production workstation that lets you create and perform music with 102 hands-on hardware controls, four large integrated color displays and a custom software workflow. The Rhizome SXE has an integrated computer running Windows 7, a quad core Intel i5 processor and a built-in 8 x 8 sound card with a wealth of connectivity ports. It’s a unique stand-alone, music-making environment in which you can compose and perform without an external computer. The Rhizome LE doesn’t have an integrated computer, but it features the same hardware controls, displays and Rhizome OS2 software. The LE operates in conjunction with an external Mac or Windows PC, and has the same overall functionality as the SXE.

Dedicated groove production hardware is all about giving you hands-on control. The less you need to touch the computer and mouse, the better. This is why the Rhizome is outfitted with four large color displays and covered with hardware buttons and knobs. 16 velocity sensitive illuminated pads are among the hardware controls, and a provided Sequencer mode enables you to improvise step sequences. You can load and create new samples with the press of a few buttons, and you can time-stretch samples in real time. The Rhizome SXE offers a self-contained workflow that can keep you away from computer monitors, trackpads and mice; however, if you desire more manual control, the SXE can support these peripherals.

There are five modes on the Rhizome: Mixer, Sequencer, Sampler, Song and Live Performance. Buttons on the top left side of the machine let you easily change between them. When you switch to a new mode, all of the controls and displays change to reflect the selected mode. You can create projects with 64 patterns, and each of those patterns can contain up to 64 MIDI sequences. You can use EQ, Compressor and “Stereolizer” effects in any track, bus or auxiliary, and you can insert six virtual effects. The sounds that the Rhizome manipulates are generated by your third party VST instruments and effects. Since the Rhizome LE is Mac compatible, it’s also compatible with AU plug-ins. The Rhizome and OS2 software let you create, mix and perform music, without the need for a host DAW program. Completed tracks can be exported and used in DAW software. You can also load two separate projects on the Rhizome and mix them DJ-style.

Feeltune is a French manufacturer that was founded by electronic musicians who desired a complete all-in-one composition and performance tool. The two Rhizome models are the result of years of research, and both offer an unrivaled hands-on workflow. While the Rhizome is by no means ultra-compact and lightweight, it’s still a completely portable solution that will cover the majority of your needs for making music in the studio and live on stage.
