The New Tascam iM2 Gives iPhones/iPads Studio-Quality Mics
The new Tascam iM2 is a compact and convenient accessory that dramatically improves the quality of the microphones for recording into an Apple iPad, iPhone, or a 4th generation iPod touch. The iM2 plugs into your Apple iOS device of choice and outfits it with a pair of stereo condenser microphones that can be swiveled over 180 degrees (so they’re pointing at the sound source). It’s compatible with any audio recording app, and it’s active when shooting video, too. The iM2 essentially transforms the connected Apple gadget into a formidable portable digital recorder with a built-in video camera.
The improvement in sound quality isn’t just due to the iM2’s upgraded stereo microphones. It attaches to the 30-pin digital port on your Apple iOS device, which enables the iM2 to provide higher-quality microphone preamps and analog to digital converters. This gives you cleaner-sounding audio and also enables the iM2 to operate without batteries. A switch lets you turn on a limiter, which discourages clipping, and a dial is provided to adjust the input level.
A mini USB port is built into the iM2, which makes it possible to charge the connected Apple device. You can connect the iM2 to a computer for power, or use the separately available Tascam PS-P515U power adapter. This is a nice feature for those who need to record for great lengths of time, because it guarantees that the battery won’t die during a session.
