Ableton Announces the Push 2 USB Software Controller

Berlin-based music software developer Ableton has just announced the Push 2, a redesigned USB hardware controller for use with the company's Live 9.5 DAW software, which is a free update for all Live 9 users. The company is also inviting owners of the original Push to take part in a trade-in program that offers up to 30% off of the Push 2. The returned Push units will be refurbished and given to music education projects for young people, along with copies of Live, all for free.

Like the original Push, the new version allows for tactile, hands-on creation of everything from melody and harmony to beats and song arrangement using its 64 velocity- and pressure-sensitive trigger pads. Unlike the original Push, which was produced in partnership with Akai, the Push 2 has been designed and engineered entirely by Ableton, and delivers a new level of playability that puts even more elements of song creation at your fingertips.

The Push 2 features a new, large multicolor display that adapts to what you’re working on, keeping you in the creative flow. Library navigation, sample waveforms, effects parameters, and mixer levels are instantly visible on the display, and are tweakable via the eight touch-sensitive encoders. The sixty-four velocity- and pressure-sensitive trigger pads can be used for anything from playing notes and chords to triggering drum sounds, sequencing patterns, and adjusting the length of loops in real time.

The new Push also has fast and flexible sampling workflows for easy slicing of samples and assigning them across the pads for playing back single hits, and for time-stretching samples. Create looping instruments on the fly, chop-up drum kits from breaks, or play longer rhythmic samples back in tempo, all without taking your hands off the Push 2. The trigger pads have also been carefully redesigned for a more musical and expressive feel. Softer, smoother, and more responsive, they provide an enhanced playing experience for creating beats and melodies.

The Push 2 is compatible with Mac and Windows, and ships with a copy of Live 9 Intro.
