When the Zoom Q3 was announced last year, it was the world's first high-resolution portable digital recorder with high quality, built-in stereo microphones and an integrated video camera. A software update was recently announced that adds a camera-setting option that makes it easier to capture a good-looking picture in bright environments. Check out this post for more information about the Q3, and a link to the new update.
If you're unfamiliar with the Q3, it's an incredibly easy device to use. You simply power it up, press a single button and you're recording. It has two modes: Video mode (in which it records high-resolution audio with video), and Audio mode (in which it just acts as a portable audio recorder). You can transfer your recordings easily to a computer with a built-in USB 2.0 connector that slides out of the Q3 for a convenient connection.
Bad-sounding audio is one of the most common problems in video production. That's why the Zoom Q3 is equipped with the same microphone elements found in the popular Zoom H4n. When your audience can clearly hear what's going on in the picture, your videos will make a much greater impact. The Q3 is ideal for making videos for YouTube, shooting family vacations, business presentations and recording music.
I'm always impressed when a manufacturer releases a software update for a product that adds new features, free of charge. When you update the software on your Zoom Q3, you will have a new "Scene Select" option. It enables you to change the setting in which the video camera records from "Auto" to "Concert Lighting." The Auto option automatically adjusts the camera to compensate for lighting changes. The Concert Lighting option will adjust the camera to capture better looking images in brightly lit environments.
