iZotope Announces RX 4 Audio Restoration Software

There are times when unforeseen circumstances prevent the pristine recording of audio, particularly in the area of audio for picture. The RX series software from iZotope has long been considered a staple within the audio and video post-processing community for repairing such issues, a unique product that uses “photo-style editing” graphics to pinpoint audio problems. The latest incarnation, just announced, firmly solidifies its usefulness with several new enhancements.

RX 4 comes in two flavors, RX 4 and RX 4 Advanced. Both are available as stand-alone products, or as plug-ins available in all the standard plug-in formats, for both Mac and Windows computers. Both feature the company’s Spectral Repair that uses precision drawing tools such as a brush and magic wand, a Dialogue De-noiser along with the usual tools for dealing with random noises, clicks, hums, and buzzes. Additional features include high-quality re-sampling and dithering, batch processing, and more.

The advanced version is aimed more at the professional user, with features such as EQ Match and Ambience Match that quickly identify the sonic properties of a source, and then apply the result to other clips. Matching ambience along with the ability to remove room tone allows the user to provide a uniform audio background, as well as create long sections of constant ambient noise to insert under inconsistent dialogue recordings.

Continuing the support for professional workflows, RX 4 Advanced features a loudness module that processes whole program mixes or segments to comply with international industry standards, the ability to export an edit log, metadata display, time and pitch adjustment, and many more indispensible tools for post production. Since several modules are available only in the stand-alone version, RX Connect (available in both editions) provides a seamless interchange between the stand-alone version and a user’s DAW.
