NAMM 2015: Nord Electro 5 Keyboard Brings New Features
At this year’s NAMM show, Nord is introducing a new line of its Electro-series stage pianos. Expanded memory, the ability to split and layer, and a live focused program section enable these emulations of classical electro-mechanical and acoustic instruments to be even more player friendly. The Nord Electro 5D 61- and 73-key versions sport a semi-weighted keybed utilizing organ-type keys with rounded "waterfall" tips, perfect for rapid organ and synthesizer licks, but also suited for playing piano sounds. The Nord Electro 5 HP 73-key keyboard features weighted hammer-action piano keys, obviously geared more toward playing piano sounds, but equally adaptable for the organ sounds.
A further delineation of these two variants is the appearance of physical drawbars on the “Waterfall”-equipped units, along with a mount for adding an optional half-moon switch for rotary speaker control. However, all three models deliver the same piano, organ, and sample synthesizer sections. The piano section now has 1GB of sample memory and includes sympathetic string resonance, while the organ section features an additional principal pipe organ mode, as well as the tone wheel and rotary speaker simulation of a vintage Hammond 122 unit from the company’s C2D Combo Organ. A sample synthesizer section provides 256MB of memory for the Nord sample library with additional controls for attack, decay/release, and dynamics.
Other across-the-board features include a stereo effects section with real-time controls, a set-list feature, and organizational function for facilitating live performances and rearranging the order of programs and samples without affecting any programs or set lists that use them. A monitor input allows for connecting an MP3 or CD player to play along with, rehearsing to or jamming with previously recorded music without the need of an external sound system, with the signal being monitored through the headphone output. Additional control pedal support from other manufacturers has also been enhanced.
