The New Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR

Can you create a rebel or are they just born that way? Obviously, Canon believes they are created and has brought forth its fastest, most sophisticated Rebel to date: the EOS Rebel T4i DSLR. Digital Rebels have always been great Canon cameras for any level of photographer, but this latest model brings with it speed, high-resolution quality and… more speed.

Equipped with an 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor, with the same new technologies found in high-end professional cameras, the Rebel T4i produces large, lush images with exceptional clarity and tonal range. These high-resolution images retain their clarity when cropped for details or enlarged into spectacular prints and 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion with 16,384 colors per channel ensures that details and color subtleties, in water for example, are preserved and recorded. For this model, Canon has included an extended ISO range of 100-12800, expandable to 25600(H), which will improve fast action capability and allow for low-light shooting opportunities never before possible.

The T4i also features Full HD Movie recording with the same ease and speed of its still photo capture. Capable of shooting in a number of recording sizes and with manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features, this camera offers professional video quality with simple control. As speed is the calling card of this Rebel, its Video functions are no exception. The fantastic new Movie Servo AF allows continuous autofocus tracking of moving subjects while recording video. This is a game-changer: no more cutting to refocus, or accepting blurred images when someone moves within the frame. All your videos can have sharp images throughout and the built-in stereo microphone means the audio quality will match that of the image. A wind-filter feature cuts down on noise when shooting outside, and recording levels can be controlled automatically or manually. If your recording needs call for the use of an external microphone, a 3.5mm input microphone jack is included as well.

Accompanying the new Rebel into the arena are two lenses, as part of two separate camera kits. The first is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom lens, a go-to lens for all your day-to-day needs, but the second is a wonderful new 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM Autofocus Lens designed with videographers in mind. The essential features of the STM are its continuous autofocus system and Dynamic Image Stabilization; both features are ideal for shooting HD video. This lens is a wonderful, multi-purpose lens with a long focal range (28.8-216mm in 35mm format) that can be used for almost all of your shooting needs, but has been designed with attributes to make it ideal for HD video work.

With the new 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM Autofocus Lens, Canon has refined its optical Image Stabilization system within the STM to deliver four equivalent stops of shake correction throughout the zoom range.  And while maintaining its compact size, it can now offer a maximum magnification of 0.28x at the telephoto end. Autofocus speed has increased due to an Inner focusing system, a high-speed CPU and an improved AF algorithm. It also added a zoom ring lock to prevent the lens from accidentally extending.

But what really marks this lens as a breakthrough is how it’s designed to work with the Rebel T4i to shoot HD Video. Specifically, the lens syncs with the T4i’s Movie Servo AF feature to provide a smooth, quiet and continuous autofocus when shooting movies. The camera re-focuses while you shoot, and the smooth transitions and quiet operation mean no erratic fades and jumps when subjects move, and no whirling sounds of the autofocus cutting into your recorded sound or dialogue. For those who desire a DSLR to shoot high-quality video and still have photo capabilities, this is the camera and lens system for you. The continuous auto focus operates thanks to a new six-group zoom system and the utilization of a stepping motor and focus mechanism. Taking DSLR movie capture one step further, Canon has introduced Dynamic IS (Image Stabilization) to this STM lens. This feature only functions in Movie Shooting Mode but uses a wide image stabilization correction range to ensure steady, shake-free video, even when walking while shooting.

At the heart of the T4i’s excellent image quality and high-speed functions is the powerful DIGIC 5 Image Processor. From the 9-point cross-type Auto Focus system to the expanded ISO range and the continuous shooting of up to 5 frames per second, the DIGIC 5 processor puts fast action capture and low-light capability into the hands of any photographer.

To further enhance the all-important auto focus on the T41i, Canon has adopted two systems, which in combination have markedly improved the AF’s speed and handling and will eliminate that horrible feeling of seeing the action pass by as your camera rolls and hunts for its focus. A 9-point all cross-type AF system (including a high-precision dual-cross f/2.8 center point) will quickly lock in on what you are shooting and retain that focus and a new Hybrid CMOS AF System increases autofocus speed and accuracy when shooting both photos and video in Live View. This is a hybrid system because it incorporates both phase and contrast detection AF technologies and is a CMOS system due to the pixels on the sensor that can assist in predicting a subject’s location and therefore track and focus faster.

As mentioned earlier, image processing improvements have increased the Rebel’s continuous shooting speed to 5 frames per second, so between its lightning-quick autofocus and rapid click, click, click, you will not miss the action, whether it is your daughter’s first goal or that simple turn of a smile that captures your son’s true beauty. Memory card compatibility has also expanded to include the Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) memory cards and Eye-Fi SD cards, which contain a Wi-Fi transmitter and internal antenna for wireless uploading of images directly from your camera.

An additional component new to the Rebel series is its Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II. This rear screen, tiltable, rotatable LCD brings a level of ease and speed to what is arguably the most important part of your shooting experience: composing and playing back your images. The Vari-angle design will also allow for faster overall shooting as you flip out the screen and twist it to any position that is most comfortable for getting your shot. No more maneuvering the camera out of the glare or squinting to see your composition. It’s wonderful for shooting in a less conspicuous manner too—quick as your hand can move, get the genuine smiles the first time, no need to ask everyone to pose again. This large, bright display is also built with the same touch-sensitive technologies of the latest smart phones. It delivers intuitive touch-panel operation that can be used for zooming or changing images as well as navigating menu and control settings. A new construction between its resin-coated cover and the liquid crystal display reduces reflections and glare, and its Clear View coating minimizes smudges and fingerprints, allowing you to enjoy the details of your images on its 1.04 million-dot screen.

It’s a good time to reiterate that the EOS Rebel T4i DSLR is available in two distinct kits, one with a lens that, while great for still photography, has been refined and specifically designed to shoot video. The first kit matches the Rebel T4i DSLR with the classic Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Autofocus lens. This is the standard, good-for-everything lens that was designed specifically for the Rebel’s APS-C sensor. Its focal length is equivalent to 28-90mm in 35mm format which means you can go from wide-angle to telephoto in just a quick turn of the ring.  It features Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer technology which compensates for camera shake to give you crisp, blur-free images every time.

Of course, the T4i is compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses, but this Rebel has been created with a partner in mind: the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Autofocus lens. Assuming Canon has corrected the most worrisome problems inherent in the Rebel line (which would bother a person interested in making videos more than they would me, since I an into stills), this camera would seem to be competitive with some of the mirrorless versions.  Having a real optical viewer is a plus!

On the other hand, I find myself wondering whether Canon, which originated the "mirrorless" camera, then dropped it, could resume the technology and produce a well-built manual-focus SLR for those of us who use one with ease (and really don't need autofocus to do what we want).  Such a camera could, I would imagine, have a full-sized sensor in a relatively small body.  It would be a boon to serious photographers and would challenge Leica directly.

I'd definitely be interested, since I am still using my F1n as my main camera because of its size and the quality of its lenses.

I'd be interested to hear how this new Rebel compares to the EOS 60D given the comparable pricing.

The T4i gives the 60D a run for it's money. Both have 18MP APS-C sensors, Vari-Angle LCD's, can accept all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and have virtually the same 5 FPS rate. The 60D has a pentaprism viewfinder which is brighter than the T4i pentamirror, a better battery life, and a faster max shutter speed of 1/8000 vs the T4i's 1/4000. However, the T4i has the later Digic 5 processor, higher ISO of 25,600, in camera HDR, continuous video auto focus, and probably the best of all, a capacitive soft touch, pinch to zoom, LCD. Many camera functions can now be accessed much more quickly and intuitively. A tough call!

Will the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens be compatible with the Canon Rebel T3i. All I want to know is will the auto focus work with the T3i in video shooting mode??

Yes, the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is compatible with the T3i; however you will not have the benefit of the STM. Also, it will not add the ability to autofocus when shooting video.

It looks our oversight.  Thanks for picking up on this. The Canon EOS 650D T4i has a stereo 1/8", 3.5mm external microphone input port for audio while shooting video.

I have the New Canon Speedlite 600 EX-RT and I would like clairification Will this camera transmit a signal to my new flash to fire when the flash is off the camera ?

I could be misreading the specs because it sounds like the camera has the transmitter built in ?

I really, really want to know: Is this camera compatible with the Canon 600EX flash, and if so, can it be used wirelessly (especially radio-wise) off-camera? Please let us know. Thanks in advance for your response.

On any Canon camera, including the T4i, you will need the ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter or another 600EX-RT on your camera in order to wirelessly fire a Speedlite 600EX-RT.  No camera's have the transmitter built in.

I'm interested in the real-time HDMI output of this camera. Do you guys know if it does 720p when an external or onboard reference monitor is plugged in?

The T4i has three video recording sizes, 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720 and 640 x 480. It will display each of  these sizes on the LCD and the external display at the same time even while recording.

Do you mean it will output HD signal via HDMI while recording, as well as keep the LCD running as well?  Do you know if it has a clean HDMI output (no characters on the screen)?  Are you positive it's outputting 1920x1080 HD while recording?  Thanks. 

It is our understanidng from Canon USA that is can do these things. However, until we can get one in our hands 100% confirmation will have to wait.  We just got in it stock and so we hope to know soon.

It would have been nice to hear more about the creative filters that the article very briefly mentions. Are they exceptional or just the average rubbish most camera companies include in their cameras? I'm patiently waiting for some camera company out there to create a real digital camera that allows a lot of image manipulation filters in camera like the amazing Hipstamatic camera. Something even more variable with high quality components and sensors that allow the photographer a range of interesting possibilities in the field. The idea of in camera film type, grain, effects, and creative lens aberrations along with user memory and ability to share it all with other users via the net is the basis for a true digital camera. Where is it? I use my Hipstamatic way more than any of my higher res cameras due to its amazing ability to create transcendence. This should not be something exclusive to a low quality phone camera.

I'd always advise against using any in-camera image manipulation. Heck just converting raw to Jpeg is more than I can stomach. The reason you don't see more of this type image manipulation features is they are basically crap. They are more suited for camera phones as a quick and fun way to share snap shots. To do image manipulation with these size image files you really are better off with a post processing application... I'm pretty sure the calculations would absolutely crush the poor processor in your camera.  I recomend Adobe LightRoom. It can make bad pictures tolerable and good pictures great. 

Canon's menus are simply horrible: The camera has lots of buttons to adjust exposure, ISO, flash.. But unfortunately almost all functions are locked if you aren't in manual mode.

For example, if you are in portait mode and simply want to adjust exposure, forget it!

On other situations, if you want to disable flash auto firing, forget it!

If it can't focus properly or if the conditions are not all correct, it simply doesn't take the picture, if it was The Moment, you lost it.

No in-camera HDR, no in camera panoramic, no nothing. Simply same firmware they have been using over the last decade. 

I'm guessing this Rebel will have the same interface which is unfortunate. For this reason alone I'd opt for one of the D models. I pretty much decided to shot entirely in manual mode years ago... Give me easy acces to change the shutter and aperture easily while looking through the lens and I'm a happy camper. It almost seems as if the controls on the Rebels have been artificially dumbed down. It's really noticable when I go from my 5D to a Rebel- yuck! Pity. I do like the reposition able view finder. I do a lot of low level wide shots and this would allow me to better control the focus. This might be a handy 2nd body if the video and focusing work well 

The write up waxes endlessly about how great the cam is for video... and then mentions zip about audio control.

Two basic questions every photographer/videographer using these dSLRs for video wants to know:

1. IS THERE A HEADPHONE JACK?

2. Is there an external microphone jack? (Another poster asked this Q and you answered it).

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel T4i DSLR camera does not have a headphone output connection; however, it does have a microphone input connection.

Canon is permitting us to accept pre-orders on the camera, but theres no sense of how long it could take to fulfill your order should you place your order today. I am sorry that we have no specific information provided to us from Canon as to how long it may take to fulfill. 

I know that I am repeating a couple of questions here but I still can not find the answer on the specs list from B&H or Canon...

Hello,

The Rebel T4i can record video in 16:9 aspect ratio at 1920x1080 full HD.

The EF-S18 135mm  f / 3.5-5.6 is STM Lens is a great all purpose lens. The 40mm f/2.8 will only benifit you if you need a lens for low light shooting or need the very small size for carrying around with you.

There is no battery consumption rating for video capture so I would bring plenty of spares as Live View operation uses alot of power. At Full HD a 16gb card will hold 48 minutes of video.

The Rebel T4i is compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.  While Canon does not list a restriction, any currently available memory card should work.

There is an external mic jack but no headphone.

The T4i is currently not available with no expected delivery date.

I can find no mention in the specs of the 3x Crop Mode that was available in the T3i and made it a super DSLR for long range wildlife recording.  Has it in fact been dropped from the T4i.

No, the T4i does not include a digital zoom like the T3i.

about accessories like the battery grip i have to wait till they bring a exact one for this camera or its compatible with the t3i one?

You do not have to wait. The same grip that works for the T3i, the Canon BG-E8 Battery Grip, also works wih the T4i.

I am moving up from a G11, which is my first digital.  I was an avid film photographer and print my own at home.  I mostly take pictures of my grandchildren and landscapes.  So far I have not taken video, but I might want to in the future.  Would the T4i be a good choice or should I stick with what I was looking at --the Canon 60D.  If the T4i is best choice, which of the two lenses makes the most sense for me.  I assume the pancake lense is not needed by me based on comments I have read so far.

Well quality wise I'd say get the 60D, but I'm very biast when it comes to Rebels. Lense wise go for a wide angle for your landscape and the basic 18-55 or a 50 f/1.8 prime lense for the photos of your grand children.

The T4i is obviously the newer camera and thus has the latest thinking and technology. In the basic items, they mostly share the same attributes such as sensor size, Vari Angle LCD’s,  all Canon EF and EF-s lenses and can do virtually the same 5 FPS rate. The 60D has a faster shutter speed of 1/8000 vs. the T4i’s 1/4000, better battery life and perhaps most important to a long time photographer, it has a pentaprism viewfinder which is brighter than the T4i’s pentamirror.  However the T4i has the latest Digic 5 processor, and higher ISO of 25,600, in-camera HDR, continuous video auto focus with the two new STM lenses and the really cool capacitive pinch to zoom LCD.

If you are doing only photo, the 60D. If you do more video, the T4i.

Thanks for the write-up. One thing not discussed is whether you can now shoot stills silently in live mode composing via the viewscreen, like a mirrorless.
(The current rebels must flip the mirror down and up, making a terribly loud clatter. Too noisy for classic music halls.)

Until we receive a demo model to do a test run with its not really possible for us to say.  Its still has a mirror in it like the other Rebels, so my best determination is that it will still make some noise, how much so is the quetion.  Keep a look out for any future reviews we do on the camera for an update.

My understanding is the T3i and T2i thrashed the mirror around because the focus/metering system required it. With the new phase/contrast focus system implemented for the video mode, in theory the mirror could be locked up and the Rebel could then yield a superior mirrorless (and quite quiet) still shooting experiernce.

How many continuous minutes can this T4i shoot video with say a 32 gig or a 64 gig card, like for a 

school event ?

The Canon T4i video clip length goes up to 29 Min 59 Seconds. With a 32GB card you will get 66 minutes of full HD at 1920 x 1080.

So, the T4i does NOT have the 12-minute limitation anymore where it stops for a second or two at 12 minutes and then keeps on recording video?

Whereas some other DSLR's have a 12 minute limit and some have a 20 minutes limit the T4I's limit is just under 30 minutes of record time before it needs to turn off momentarily.

I am considering trading in my T2i for a new T4i primarily because I want to be able to take more still photos in the "continuous" or "burst" mode (shooting action wildlife).  My T2i is rated at 3.6fps and the T4i is rated at 5fps.  5fps is probably fast enough.  I am more concerned about how many shots I can take continuously before the camera must stop to let the buffer write enough data to the memory card to create room for new photos.  In other words, I need a longer "burst", not necessarily a faster one.  I am currently using a SanDisk Extreme card that is rated at a "write speed" of about 30Mb/s.  I want to know whether I will get "longer bursts" with the T4i if I buy the SanDisk Extreme Pro (rated at about 90Mb/s).  Would the faster SD card let the camera's buffer clear more quickly so that it can take more shots before it must stop to let the memory card catch up?  I think that what I am asking is:  (i) what is the "write speed" of the buffer in the DIGIC 5 processor (writing RAW format, not JPEG), (ii) is the throughput speed of data from the CMOS sensor through the buffer to the memory card greater than 30Mb/s (so that it can take advantage of the higher memory card speed), and (iii) how many RAW (approx 18MB RAW images) could the camera write to a 90Mb/s Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB card before the camera had to stop taking photos to let the memory card catch up with the buffer?
