Share

Canon has announced four new additions to their PowerShot digital camera lineup.  In addition to updated features, three of these four cameras, including the PowerShot G16, are now providing a built-in Wi-Fi connection for easy image sharing. Also, a new EF-S mount lens has been introduced.

Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera

Featuring a 12.1MP High Sensitivity CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 6 image processor, the Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera's combination of a 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and new image processor increases its performance capability compared with that of its predecessor, the G15.  Specifically, autofocus speeds and burst-shooting rates are increased, and low-noise performance in low-light situations has improved. Full-resolution burst shooting is 12.2 fps for the first six shots, and then settles into a still very fast 9.3 fps for up to 522 shots. ISO sensitivity ranges up to 12800 and to further help in low-light situations, Intelligent Image Stabilization offers six distinct modes to provide blur-free imaging in a variety of situations including panning, macro and tripod shooting modes.

As mentioned, the G16 provides built-in Wi-Fi which allows you to wirelessly transfer your images to your computer or portable device wirelessly via the free Canon CameraWindow app and directly to social networking sites through CANON iMAGE GATEWAY. The Wi-Fi setup is easy as no WEP key input is needed, and managing your transfer preferences only requires a web browser and a wireless network!

The G16’s lens offers a 5x optical zoom with the 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 28-140mm. This provides a versatile set of focal lengths for wide-angle and telephoto shooting. The maximum aperture on this lens is f/1.8 at the wide-angle end and f/2.8 at the telephoto end. This provides the option of fast shutter speeds in low light as well shallow-depth-of-field imaging for pleasing portraiture.

The new DIGIG 6 processor also enables improved video capability. Full HD 1080p capture is supported in the MP4 format and 60 fps shooting provides smooth, life-like imaging. Additionally, Fine Movie Detail Processing reduces noise and improves the quality of videos recorded at 30 fps. A dedicated button has you recording video in an instant and a built-in stereo microphone offers top-notch audio. Also, an HDMI output means you can connect directly to your HD TV for convenient viewing.

For both the advanced shooter and the hobbyist, the G16 is an ideal camera. It provides multi-aspect RAW capture to shoot uncompressed in several image ratios and is compatible with a range of EOS system accessories including Canon Speedlites. Customizable manual focus peaking allows for precise manual focus and the pro-style front dial can be set to control numerous shooting parameters. Also, new artistic sub-modes such as Art bold and Art Vivid offer new opportunities for creative enhancement of your photos and videos, and a new star shooting modes enable easy photo and video capture of the night sky.

A 3.0 LCD provides clear image composition and playback and an optical viewfinder is available for stable eye-level viewing. Both a hot shoe and a built-in flash are aboard the G16, which advances forward in the beloved line of PowerShot G-series digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot SX510 HS Digital Camera

The PowerShot SX510 HS Digital Camera still provides the same long-zoom capability and bridge camera form factor as its predecessor, the SX500 IS, but it has updated its sensor, provided Wi-Fi capability, and added a host of feature improvements.

The SX510 HS houses a 12.1MP High Sensitivity CMOS sensor with the DIGIC 4 image processor for improved low-light performance and the new High Speed AF increases focus speeds. Zoom Framing Assist automatically zooms in or out while tracking your subject and helps keep it in focus. This is a particularly helpful feature on the SX510 HS as this camera’s big deal is its powerful zoom lens which is a 30x optical zoom with the 35mm focal length equivalent of 24-720mm. This supplies you with a complete range of focal lengths from true wide-angle to super telephoto and with Zoom Framing Assist, Optical Image Stabilization and six-mode Intelligent IS, you are given the tools to use this powerful lens to capture crisp, blur-free shots throughout the zoom range. The SX510 HS also features a built-in pop-up flash.

Improving on the SX500, full HD 1080p video capture is now supported by the SX510 HS and HDMI output allows for easy playback on your HDTV. A 3.0 LCD with a screen resolution of 461k dots provides image composition and playback and Smart AUTO mode selects the best camera settings based on 32 predefined shooting situations. Like the above PowerShots, the SX510 HS also has built-in Wi-Fi for easy wireless image transfer to computer or smart device via the Canon CameraWindow app, and to social networking sites via CANON iMAGE GATEWAY.

Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Digital Camera

Finally, the PowerShot SX170 IS Digital Camera has been introduced as the follow-up to the SX160. It has a 16MP CCD sensor and the DIGIC 4 image processor. A 16x optical zoom lens with its 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-448mm provides coverage for a range of wide-angle and telephoto shooting situations. Optical Image Stabilization reduces the effects of camera shake for clear photos when shooting in dim light or using the telephoto end of the 16x zoom lens. High Speed AF has improved focus speeds on the SX170 IS and Intelligent IS automatically chooses from six different modes to optimize image stabilization.

Video capture is supported by the SX170 IS at 720p HD with a dedicated button as well as zoom capability during shooting. Stereo sound is recorded, too. A large 3.0 LCD provides composition and playback viewing. Assistive features such as Smart AUTO with 32 predefined shooting situations are ideal for the beginner to capture pro-like shots. And new to the SX170 IS is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which not only allows for less waste and longer shooting times, but results in a more ergonomic design and more comfortable grip. The SX170 IS Digital Camera is available in a black or red finish.

Canon 55-250mm IS STM lens

The new EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens updates the current EF-S 55-250mm lens with the addition of the STM (Stepping Motor) AF system, which provides fast, smooth and silent autofocus. This is an important feature when shooting in sound-sensitive environments and especially when shooting video. The lens itself is a powerful telephoto zoom in a compact and lightweight form. Its 35mm equivalent focal-length range is 88-400mm which will bring distant subjects close and compress depth in your frame. It provides 3.5 stops of correction with its image stabilization system and a minimum focus distance of 2.8'. An improved AF algorithm, high-speed CPU, and rear focusing system increase autofocus speeds, and full-time manual focus permits precise manual focus even in autofocus mode. The front lens section does not rotate while focusing permitting the precise use of polarizing filters. One UD lens element reduces chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and enhanced lens coatings minimize flare and ghosting.

While I wasn't exactly "excited" about the "new" 55-250 STM (as it seems to be following Canon's trend to just give a slight update on their entry-level DSLR products rather than properly upgrading them, pretty much like the T5i over the T4i and the STM version of the 18-55 kit lens), I thought I COULD be interested in this lens and maybe even buy it with the 70D if it really works that great - video autofocus wise.

Sure, the fact that it has a inner focusing system is kind of a good step up, but that is kind of expected since they're installing a STM motor inside. But what REALLY bothered me is that: A) THEY COULD have made it a bit faster (didn't need to be 2.8 but 3.5 would be enough); and B) PLASTIC MOUNT??? REALLY? That's just plain stupid. The 40mm 2.8 STM "pancake" is a ridiculously SMALL PRIME that sells for U$150 - U$200 (MSRP) and it has a metal mount. I just bought a 75-300 USM on BH for U$170 (U$235 MSRP), a pretty dated and low-end lens (doesn't have IS or inner focusing) and that one has a metal mount too. Those two alone are good examples that cost shouldn't be a real problem or even an excuse (and honestly, on a large scale production, these costs are really almost irrelevant).

Since the 70D is the ONLY Canon DSLR so far that apparently has a TRUE, real-world usable video continuous autofocus (the T4i/T5i were bitter disappointments over such a big promise), IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE that this "new" 55-250 would be so cheap in build quality. The xxD series are mid-level cameras, unlike the Rebel series, and the 60D have been extensively used for "pro" quality video production... and you're giving this guys a "exciting" "new" lens with cheap plastic mount? If it's intended to be a crappy "kit" lens, I think it might be ok for that reason, but they could have done it better and made it a serious alternative to people who want to shoot video and are actually thinking about buying that lens alone.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised though. To "update" the T4i with basically a mode dial that can keep spinning was an awful joke, but it annoys me how they brag about their "new" stuff like it's something really innovative. I just hope that the 70D will live up to the hype.

Canon really changed things with their amazing DSLR video back in 2009, but it seems they thought that was enough and got lazy. They'll eventually be swollen by other companies offerings if they keep it like that. It's a shame and I'm really sad by the way they're doing things nowadays. They basically created the HDSLR video market (and changed the game for low-budget video production), but they'll be crushed by the competition if they don't game up seriously in the near future.
