WPPI 2014: The Biggest Wedding Filmmaking Event of the Year

Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) has added a series of seminars, dedicated to the craft of wedding videography, to their annual Conference and Expo in Las Vegas, taking place from February 27 to March 6. The new series is a collaborative effort involving WPPI Director of Education and Membership Jason Groupp and top industry cinematographers, such as Vincent Laforet. “Each year we’ve seen an increase in wedding and event filmmakers joining our conference,” explains Groupp. “WPPI: Filmmaking is a program specifically designed for wedding and event filmmakers.”

Sony FDR-AX100 4K Handycam

Sony has announced two new Handycam camcorders, each with 1” image sensors at CES 2014. A veritable show stopper, the FDR-AX100 is capable of recording 4K Ultra HD video at 30 frames per second and Full HD 1080p at up to 60 fps. The second camera, the HDR-CX900 has a practically identical design and feature set, sans the 4K recording mode. Both cameras represent a significant step forward for Sony’s consumer level camcorders.

The Robotic, Unreal Cinematography of the Film “Gravity”

Gravity opens with a 13-minute, uninterrupted shot that introduces the audience to three astronauts outside a space shuttle. Starting wide, the camera pushes toward Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) as she attempts to make routine repairs, when suddenly debris from an exploded Russian satellite hurls toward them, destroying their space shuttle. Stone, still tethered to the doomed spacecraft, unhooks herself and is sent flying away into the vastness of space with limited oxygen and limited options. This all happens without any cuts.
