Have you ever looked into a surveillance camera and wondered who was watching you? Well, even if you haven't, you should know that the camera mounted to the ceiling may well be a dummy. In fact, we carry loads of dummy surveillance cameras designed to deter would-be intruders by giving the feeling that they are being watched. This is a great item for mom-and-pop stores on a budget, families with concerns about trespassers, schools with concerns about delinquent behavior, and more.

Who Knew is an ongoing weekly series featuring some of the items that you wouldn't typically find in your average camera store. But then again, we're not your typical camera store.

In the world of filmmakers and videographers, there is a prolonged myth that bigger is better. The truth is, it all depends on the specific assignment. However, in capturing candid and real-life events, a clunky shoulder-mounted camera often inhibits the ability for even the best camera operator to obtain unobstructed realism. Packed with all the settings and controls an experienced shooter would require, the JVC GY-HM100U is a deceptively small camcorder that provides the operator with a professional level of image control, as well as the freedom of invisibility. This makes it perfectly suited to many videographers and documentarians.

When I buy a brand-new camera, I tend to treat it like my baby. I’ll coddle it, wipe it down when a fleck of dust lands on it, and I’ll handle it as gently as I would a vial of nitroglycerin. After a few weeks, though, I’ll ease up a bit, but I’ll never feel completely comfortable diving into the dirt with my expensive gear while chasing the perfect shot.

Tips and Solutions

Though inexpensive flash memory camcorders have been snapped up by consumers in droves in recent years, even casual users recognize their severe limitations. Typically, these devices offer a lackluster lens, provide only digital zoom, and perform poorly in dim light or an unsteady hand. Manual controls, touch screens, and GPS simply aren't included in the equipment. All this helps explain why cameras that record to tape or hard disks continue to be preferred by home video enthusiasts.
