PhotoPlus 2013

Highlights from PhotoPlus 2013

The PDN PhotoPlus Expo took place in New York City, and B&H was everywhere. We were exhibitors at the show (booth #455), and we posted a storm of show updates on B&H Insights, Twitter and Instagram. There was a bunch of compelling new products on display at the show, so we've rounded up the most interesting highlights in this post.

PhotoPlus 2013: Spinlight 360 Flash Accessory System

After LED panels, I felt that I should move back to still photo and on-camera flash units. The Spinlight 360 was an intriguing new piece of gear. They were giving a demonstration, and I couldn't tell you how quickly they moved through all the different options. First it was a clear dome, then a filter, followed by a snoot. It was fast, and held to the flash head really well. It also spins 360º for using half domes and similar items however you would like. Need some more control over an on-camera flash? Spinlight 360 may work for you.

PhotoPlus 2013: Professional LED Lights from Rotolight

The Rotolight booth is bright! They have a bunch of round LED panels set up, and a couple mounted on DSLRs. Within the past year they have won multiple awards, and they feature WiFi control for up to 512 different panels—quite impressive if you ask me! The lights have super-accurate color that’s good enough to be used on Captain Phillips. And for the DSLR filmmaker, a great small LED panel with some LEE filters and a microphone should be extremely useful. One mount for two important items.

PhotoPlus 2013: Peak Design's Camera Holster System

After using Kickstarter to fund the original Capture camera holster system, Peak Design is out with version 2 and a variety of new accessories. This slick new design features a clip that you attach to your belt or another strap, which allows you to quickly snap your camera in and out. The Capture and Capture Pro models can carry your large camera system with ease. And they are compatible with Arca-Swiss and Manfrotto tripods, if you pick certain models.

PhotoPlus 2013: Mobile Drives from G-Tech

G-Technology displayed their new G-Drive Slim and Mobile portable hard drives. Both drives offer 1TB capacity and 7200rpm. The Slim connects via USB 3.0 and the Mobile has USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 ports.

PhotoPlus 2013: Manfrotto 190XPRO3 Tripod and Pro Bags

The 190XPRO3 has aluminum construction, and extends to 53". The tripod features a Quick Power Lock design that quickly locks the legs into place at four different angles. There's an easy-lock thread designed for sturdy support for flip arms, and a horizontal column that's designed for heavier gear and rotates a full 360º. The tripod is easy to carry with motorcycle-style grips.

PhotoPlus 2013: New Straps and Great Bags from Lowepro & Joby

The Lowepro & Joby booth showed off their new Pro Sling and Convertible Neck Straps. Along with a great collection of bags, they have moved into more ways to carry and secure your camera.

PhotoPlus 2013: Lexar Workflow Card Reader

Lexar showed the Workflow Reader, a modular card reader that accommodates any combination of CF, SD/SDHC/SDXC, and QXD cards simultaneously via removable bays. The device attaches via USB 3.0, and can transfer in batches without sacrificing speed. It's also powered by its USB connection, and can fit into most gadget bags.

PhotoPlus 2013: Stylish Bags from Ona and Epiphanie

If you want something reminiscent of a handbag, be sure to find Ona and Epiphanie. These very stylish bags are designed to look like something you would have anywhere, and not tell everyone you are carrying thousands of dollars in photo gear.
