Why and When to Use a Stereo Mic on a Camera

A typical human being sees the world through two eyes, smells the world through two nostrils, and hears the world through two ears. Why we only have one mouth is a mystery, but it likely has something to do with noise pollution. Since we hear the world through two separate ears, recording audio in stereo for video work seems like a natural choice, but it isn’t always the best choice. Even so, there are many situations where using a stereo mic on a camera yields really nice results. In this article I’ll tell you about the times when you should use a stereo mic on a video camera, and make it clear when you should use a different kind of microphone. Plus I’ll share some mission critical tips for getting good sound when shooting outdoors.

Sennheiser Awards B&H as Dealer of the Year

Our customers have always been Sennheiser fanatics. Their Evolution Series wireless systems and wired microphones have maintained a well deserved popularity. Even when I walk around the B&H executive offices, I always see lots of our employees wearing Sennheiser's HD-280 Pro headphones (because they sound so nice and really block out noise). So it goes without saying that B&H is indeed proud to be named Sennheiser's Dealer of the Year in their professional audio business category.

The Sound is KLEER

Over the last few years here at B&H, I've done my fair share of hands-on headphone reviews. However, I haven't really spent much time looking at the wireless options that are available. To be honest, I've never really had a great experience with various wireless headphones in the past. Recently, I took 3 offerings from Sennheiser for a spin and let me just say, I may be a wireless convert from here on out.

Testing Out the New Sennheiser/Adidas Sports Headphones

In January of 2009, I made the token New Year's resolution to start exercising regularly. I kicked things off in late May. Instead of signing up for a gym membership, I bought a high-tech pair of sneakers and forced myself to run. It can be very difficult to motivate yourself to work out, but with a properly designed set of sports headphones, exercising opens up a unique and immersive musical experience.

The Adventures of Audio Post for Film

Part One

Early in 2008, a friend sent me an email with a link to a YouTube video. The video was a preview of a movie he was producing/directing called "Overnite Shift". I was immediately intrigued by the excellent look of this no-budget movie, and something about the characters piqued my interest. I did however have reservations concerning the audio, which to my ears was problematic. On getting in touch with him, he informed me that most of the film had already been shot, but that he was having issues with the sound person delivering on his commitments. The director and I had previously worked together, so he asked me if I wanted to become involved in the project.

The Sweet Sounds of HD - Recording Great Sounding Audio with the Canon EOS 5D MkII

The EOS 5D Mark II, one of the latest offerings from Canon, is the world's first dSLR camera to offer Full HD video recording capability. But what if you want to capture great sounding audio to accompany your great looking video? The 5D MkII records stunning video clips at a 1080p resolution with a frame rate of 30fps, but the audio is recorded with a tiny built-in mono microphone. Thankfully the camera also includes a stereo 3.5mm microphone input that will enable you to capture much better audio than that offered by the built-in mic. Shooting video on the MkII is very easy.
