Unveiled: Nikon's New D750 DSLR, 20mm f/1.8 Lens, and SB-500 AF Speedlight

Nikon has really pulled out the stops with their new D750 DSLR Camera. This full-frame shooter, with a 24.3MP sensor, built-in Wi-Fi, and prime features from the D4S and D810, heads an impressive list of new gear just announced by Nikon. In addition to the D750 and an accompanying camera/lens kit, Nikon has released a battery grip for the D750, a new Speedlight, a 20mm f/1.8G for FX format, and a 52mm Close-Up Conversion lens.

While the look and feel of the D750 bring to mind their compact DSLRs, its feature set is on par with the larger Nikon cameras and its pedigree will put it in a rarified spot as both a high performance still—and impressive HD video—camera. Its newly designed FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor provide sharp, low-noise imaging throughout its ISO range of 100 to 12800, which is expandable up to 512000. Performance speeds are also noteworthy, including a 6.5 fps continuous shooting speed, which outpaces all other current Nikon DSLRs except the flagship D4/D4S. Also, it uses the same autofocus and metering technology as the D4S and the D810; Nikon's powerful 51-point AF system with 15 cross-type sensors and 3D Color Matrix Metering III with a 91,000-pixel RGB sensor. Additionally, autofocus sensitivity reaches a new -3 EV benchmark for accurate AF in low light.

Full HD video is supported with professional capabilities equal to that of the D810, including simultaneous recording of off-camera uncompressed and compressed 1080p footage at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 fps. Manual control of ISO, shutter speed and aperture is supported during recording and Power Aperture control enables smooth exposure and depth-of-field transitions. Continuous-servo autofocus adjusts during recording. Flat Picture Control mode provides easier post processing and live view zebra patterning is available for easier exposure control.  Inputs for an external microphone and headphones are also provided. Smooth time-lapse sequencing up to 9,999 shots in-camera is also supported. Trumping the D810 slightly is the D750’s ability to utilize special effects mode while recording video.

A first for a full-frame Nikon is built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, which not only allows wireless transfer of selected images to your smartphone or tablet, but enables remote monitor and control. The D750 is also compatible with the WT-5A Wireless Transmitter + UT-1 Communication Unit for faster wireless transfers and sending files via FTP. Wi-Fi connectivity is a boon not only for those who want to share images on social media, but particularly for working photographers with deadlines to meet. In-camera, images can be stored to SD, SDHC, SDXC cards with the D750’s dual card slot.

Another first for a full-frame Nikon is its tilting LCD screen. The 3.2" 1,229k-dot vari-angle LCD has RGBW alignment and color-balance customization for color matching with an external monitor. The tilting capability allows for clearer low- and high-angle viewing, along with 100% frame coverage for greater compositional accuracy. And of course, the camera also features a stable, eye-level optical viewfinder, also with 100% frame coverage.

The body of the D750 utilizes a monocoque design, gaining strength from its exterior shell and for lighter-weight durability its front face is constructed from carbon-fiber reinforced plastics while the rear and top plate are magnesium alloy. The ergonomic large grip and control lay-out will be familiar to Nikon DSLR users and a hot shoe mount and built-in flash are supported. The optional AS-15 Sync Terminal Adapter is also available. Weather and dust sealing will allow users to worry less about bringing it out in the rain.

This full-frame camera is compatible with all F-mount FX-format lenses, and Nikon has created a kit with a 24-120mm lens. The Nikon D750 DSLR Camera with 24-120mm Lens bundles the D750 with AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens, which is a versatile wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture for consistent exposure and depth of field throughout its extensive zoom range. Nikon Vibration Reduction image stabilization enables handheld shooting at up to 3.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible. An internal focus design and Silent Wave Motor autofocus drive provide fast, smooth, and almost silent AF action without extending the lens barrel. Two ED and three aspherical lens elements minimize aberrations and coma for sharp color-accurate imaging and Nikon’s Nano Crystal and Super Integrated lens coatings suppress flare and ghosting. Paired with the D750, this is an ideally multifunctional lens for both the camera’s photo and video capabilities.

The MB-D16 Multi Power Battery Pack for D750 is the battery grip dedicated for the D750. It enables extended shooting time and a comfortable, secure grip when shooting in the vertical position. Additionally, an alternate shutter release button, multi-selector, AF start buttons and command dials are provided for easier handling. Internal AA and EN-EL15 battery holders are supplied with the grip for versatile powering options. Nikon has made the AN-DC14 Strap for Nikon D750 DSLR Camera available as a replacement neck strap for the D750, and an optional 2-Year Extended Service Coverage for D750 Camera protects your investment.

Beyond the D750 and its accessories, Nikon has announced the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED lens, which is a very fast ultra-wide-angle prime lens for FX and DX format DSLRs. The broad, inclusive perspective created by this lens is effective for landscape vistas, architecture, events, weddings, and creative shooting in many other applications. On DX format cameras its 35mm focal length equivalency is 30mm, making it an ideal standard wide-angle option. The f/1.8 maximum aperture enables the use of fast shutter speeds, enhanced low-light capabilities, shallow depth of field control, and a bright view for precise focusing. The minimum focus distance is 7.8" and it employs Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate, and quiet focusing.

With two aspherical and two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and Nano Crystal lens coating, sagittal flare and chromatic aberration are virtually eliminated, with result being sharp rendering across the entire frame in both still and video capture. The filter thread is 77mm and the HB-72 Lens Hood is included with the lens to block unwanted light and also offers a degree of protection for the lens.

Also new from Nikon is the 52mm Close-Up Lens, which screw-mounts on the front of lenses with a 52mm filter thread, and provides increased magnification and shortened minimum focus distance for standard-length lenses.

Lastly, the new SB-500 AF Speedlight is a compact, lightweight i-TTL flash unit with LED video for versatile on-camera or off-camera lighting for photos and video. Operating on just two AA batteries and with minimal control buttons, the SB-500 provides a guide number of 78.7' at ISO 100 with 24mm coverage in FX format and 16mm coverage in DX format. Its head rotates 180° left and right and tilts 90° upward, allowing you to bounce light for more flattering portraits. If your camera supports commander mode, the Speedlight can be used wirelessly off-camera. In addition to its still capabilities, it features an LED light for daylight-balanced illumination up to 100 lux. It can be used at three output levels—quarter, half, or full power—making it practical for low-light video shooting and close-up still photography. With the D810 or D750, the SB-500 AF Speedlight communicates LED and flash color information to the camera for optimal white balance.

For the SB-500, Nikon has introduced two accessories, the AS-23 Speedlight Stand for SB-500 AF Speedlight Flash to support the flash when it’s being used off-camera, and the SS-DC2 Soft Case for SB-500 AF Speedlight Flash, to protect the light during storage and transport.
