Olympus Announces the New Stylus 1 Digital Camera with Constant f/2.8 Zoom Lens

With a form factor that incorporates the best of the legendary OM series cameras, the just-announced Olympus Stylus 1 Digital Camera is a slim, stylish compact digital camera with a 12MP sensor and a 10.7x optical zoom lens. The 1/1.7” BSI CMOS sensor offers clear, color-accurate imaging and low-light capability. The ISO sensitivity of the Stylus 1 ranges from 100-12800 and includes an auto mode. Fast autofocus speeds and a 7 fps continuous shooting rate, up to a maximum of 70 full-resolution jpeg exposures and 25 RAW exposures, speak to the performance capability of the TruePic VI image processor on this, Olympus’s new top-of-the-line point-and shoot camera.

The optical zoom lens provides the 35mm focal-length equivalent of 28-300mm for a zoom range from true wide angle to super telephoto. It can magnify distant subjects, compress space and open up to shoot expansive landscapes and tight interiors. Most impressive is that it features a constant f/2.8 aperture for effective low-light shooting and shallow-depth-of-field focus control. In-camera image stabilization also adds to its ability to capture clear, blur-free images in low light and when shooting at the lens’s longer focal lengths.

For clear, stable, eye-level image composition, the Stylus 1 supports a high-definition electronic viewfinder with 1.44-million-dot resolution and 1.15x magnification. The live view image in the EVF shows adjustments made to exposure, white balance, and even when art filters are applied and camera settings and modes are visible within the finder’s image. An eye sensor registers when the camera is brought to your eye and automatically switches the live view from the rear LCD monitor to the EVF. The LCD monitor is 3.0” with 1.04 million dots. It supports touchscreen control of camera settings, autofocus, and shutter release. Swipe gestures in playback let you rapidly see the images in memory. With tilt capability upward to 80º and downward to 50º, the LCD will adjust for high- and low-angle composition and to minimize reflections in strong light. Brightness, tone, and color saturation are all adjustable via touch control.

The LCD monitor also provides live view and playback for the camera’s HD 1080p video mode. Full HD video can be captured at 30 fps and slow-motion video is supported in lower resolutions. A built-in stereo microphone with a Wind Noise Reduction feature enables quality sound recording; a micro HDMI output connects directly to an HDTV for direct screening.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity lets you sync the Stylus 1 to your smartphone or tablet and immediately share images and post them to social media sites. In addition, when using the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) application, the remote function lets you see the camera’s live view and control aperture, ISO, autofocus, shutter release, and more from your iOS or Android device. Geotagging is supported and filter effects and customized signature stamps can also be added to your transferred images and videos.

The form factor of the Stylus 1 is reminiscent of the OM series of Olympus cameras and is not only handsome but very practical. Well-placed dials and buttons and a textured grip complement its style and make for intuitive navigation and comfortable handling. A zoom lever at the base of the lens is placed right where your finger rests, and an impressive hybrid control ring around the lens is customizable to control functions like zoom and manual focus and even exposure, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity. Two function buttons also provide fast access to your most important settings and in combination with the control ring and sub dial, you can control nearly all camera functions without taking your eye off your subject. An integrated automatic lens cap opens and closes when the camera is powered on and off. The thin plastic shield eliminates the persistent worries associated with lens caps such as: where did I put it, or when will I lose it?

A built-in TTL flash with numerous flash modes is available when light is scarce or when adding fill flash to eliminate shadows. In addition, the built-in flash can wirelessly control up to 4 groups of off-camera flash. A hot-shoe mount enables the use of external flash units and is able to hold other accessories such as microphones and monitors when shooting video.

As mentioned, the Stylus 1 offers RAW capture, fast continuous shooting, and P/A/S/M modes for exacting exposure and color control as well as fast performance, but as a point-and-shoot that is designed for any level of shooter there are also comprehensive auto and assistive features. Scene Select AE automatically makes the optimal camera settings when shooting specific scene types such as Fireworks, Night, or Sports. Face Priority AF recognizes faces within a scene and Eye Detect places focus directly on your subject’s eye when shooting portraits. Eleven in-camera art filters, such as Grainy Film and Pop Art allow you to add effects to your images, and Photo Story creates a mini photo essay by combining multiple shots into one.

With a form factor that leans toward a slim, lightweight version of the Olympus OM-D series and includes an impressive Electronic Viewfinder as well as a versatile 28-300mm equivalent zoom lens with constant f/2.8 aperture, the new Stylus 1 is an advanced point-and-shoot camera that should impress shooters of all levels.
