AMD FX Series Processors Bulldozing Their Way to Eight Cores

Share

Remember when desktop computers used to have single-core processors, which would take an eternity just to open a Word document? Me neither.

That’s because dual-core and even quad-core central processing units (CPUs) have become the standard for desktop computers. With the emphasis now on performance and multitasking, CPUs need to be quick, efficient and powerful. AMD released its FX series of Bulldozer CPUs last October to keep up with this growing demand for faster and more reliable processors.

The AMD FX series of Bulldozer processors comes in quad-core, six-core and first-ever eight-core variants. All AMD FX series Bulldozer processors use 32-nanometer, Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology, which helps reduce leakage for improved efficiency, increased clock rate headroom and better thermals. They also only fit into motherboards with an AMD3+ socket. With simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing abilities, you’ll be able to experience smooth and seamless multitasking when multiple applications are run simultaneously.

All AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs have an integrated DDR3 memory controller with HyperTransport technology. HyperTransport technology allows all AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs to have a bandwidth of up to 21GB/s using dual-channel memory and a total processor-to-system bandwidth of up to 37GB/s. The AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs take full advantage of all your RAM modules, even new low-voltage memories of 1.35V and 1.2V, so you can multitask smoothly and seamlessly.

AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs also have AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) technology with an Input/Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU). These silicon feature-set enhancements are designed to improve the performance, reliability and security of existing and future virtualization environments by allowing virtualized applications with direct and rapid access to their allocated memory. IOMMU is an extension to AMD64 architecture to support address translation and access protection on Direct Memory Access (DMA) transfers. It does this by applying a level of security for a User Level application and Virtual Machine guest operating system. Some features include device isolation, device assignment in virtualized systems, trusted boot support and unified interrupt management.

Running eight-core processors can be taxing, especially on the power supply, but the AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs have AMD PowerNow! technology (also known as Cool’n’Quiet technology) for enhanced power management. The AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs automatically and instantaneously adjust performance states and features based on processor performance requirements to save power. C6 power state is enabled for cache flush and voltage down individual cores. CC6 power state is enabled in order to allow all cores in C6 to power even lower for quieter operation and reduced energy consumption. With a separate memory controller power control and an IO-based C-state interface, you won’t need drivers or BIOS because it works automatically. Power can be switched on and off within a single clock cycle, saving energy with no impact on performance.

While these AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs sound impressive, their true value and performance can’t be measured by themselves. Below is a list of desktop computers that show how versatile the AMD FX series Bulldozer processors can be, whether for affordable performance, multimedia editing or high-end PC gaming.

The Acer Aspire M3 AM3450-UR30P Desktop Computer is a reliable desktop computer at an affordable price. It houses an AMD FX-4100 Bulldozer processor. The FX-4100 can reach 3.6 GHz with its quad cores. It can also be overclocked up to 3.8 GHz, thanks to AMD TurboCore technology. With a total L2 cache of 4MB and a L3 cache of 8MB as well as 6GB of DDR3 RAM, this Acer desktop computer runs multiple applications with ease. The FX-4100 has a thermal design power of 95 watts, so remember to optimize your cooling fans. Enjoy smooth and seamless performance at an affordable price, which includes an AMD Radeon HD 4250 graphics card, 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive, a SuperMulti DVD burner, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi support, a USB keyboard and mouse.

If you’re looking for more of a multimedia PC, the HP Pavilion HPE h9-1130 Phoenix Desktop Computer is a better choice. It has one of the first ever eight-core AMD FX-8120 Bulldozer processor. Its stock speed of 3.1 GHz can be overclocked up to 4.0 GHz with AMD TurboCore technology.  With an 8MB total L2 cache, an 8MB L3 cache and 8GB of DDR3 RAM, this HP desktop computer ensures that running or editing high-definition videos is smooth and seamless. The Blu-ray player on this HP desktop computer allows you to play all your favorite Blu-ray movies right on your computer. It also has an AMD Radeon HD 7670 graphics card with 1GB of dedicated memory, a 2TB hard drive, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, a USB keyboard and mouse.

PC gamers looking for high-quality performance without breaking the bank should consider the CyperpowerPC Gamer Ultra GUA290 Desktop Gaming Computer. It houses the most powerful version of the AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs, the eight-core AMD FX-8150 processor, in a Xion AXP 970 Predator mid-tower case. It has a stock speed of 3.6 GHz, but can be easily overclocked up to 4.2 GHz using AMD TurboCore technology. With an 8MB total L2 cache, an 8MB L3 cache and 16GB of DDR3 RAM, this desktop gaming computer takes full advantage of all the cores to provide smooth, uninterrupted performance. Add an AMD Radeon HD 6870 graphics card with 1GB of dedicated memory and you’ll be able to put your favorite games into max settings with Microsoft DirectX 11 without having to worry about lag, jagged images or screen tearing. This CyperpowerPC desktop gaming computer also has a 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive, a Blu-ray player with DVD burning capabilities, Gigabit Ethernet, an Xtreme Gear USB keyboard and mouse.

The AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs raise multitasking and pure core performance to another level by introducing the industry’s first 32nm 8-core desktop processor. And you can push the already impressive stock speeds to new heights with AMD Turbo Core technology for added performance. The best thing about these AMD FX series Bulldozer CPUs is that their impressive performance comes at an affordable price.
