Fill Your Laptop Niche with a Lenovo Notebook Computer

Looking for a new laptop? Everyone wants to know what’s hot and what’s not in the laptop world—whole websites are dedicated to it—but the laptop you choose is dependent on what you use it for. We’ve said it time and again: what do you currently do with your laptop? What do you want to do with your laptop? How much do you want to spend?

Manufacturers like Lenovo not only do a great job helping you find your laptop niche, they offer you a variety of options so you can pick and choose wisely. Gone are the days where we were forced to choose a laptop from a meager lineup—now, there are laptops specialized for your profession.

Or your hobby.

The Lenovo Y50 59441555

Take, for instance, the Lenovo Y50 59441555 15.6" Notebook Computer. This traditional laptop not only uses a powerful and updated quad core 4th-generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor, with a 6MB cache and a clock speed that can reach 3.6 GHz, but it also features a rarity among laptops—a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M graphics controller with 2GB of onboard RAM. Gaming, anyone? Because gaming is the racetrack for which this horse was built. The dedicated graphics controller ensures that games with high resource hogging like Borderlands 2 or Batman: Arkham Origins can be displayed at 1920 x 1080 resolution with an appreciable frame rate. Add in extras like an AccuType backlit full-sized keyboard, HDMI and USB 3.0 connectivity, and JBL-designed stereo speakers with an integrated subwoofer for the most immersive audio you can find and, like something out of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this laptop screams, “Play Me!”

All that power is great, but what about the visuals?

The display is a backlit LED Full HD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. This means that along with an aspect ratio of 16:9, this laptop can play back full 1080p content without upscaling or letterboxing. All that is great when using the laptop for multimedia entertainment, but it adds real shine when playing games. This device is also capable of WiDi, Intel’s wireless display protocol, which lets you transmit what’s on the screen to a WiDi-enabled display—wirelessly.

Other amenities include the fastest Wi-Fi protocol right now (802.11 ac), Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 dedicated ports, HDMI, and an external SuperMulti DVD burner optical drive. Storage consists of a 1TB hard drive with an 8GB SSD cache to speed up your most-accessed programs, like your OS. Additionally, there’s an SD card slot for adding up to 128GB of extra storage.

Gamers, go on with your bad selves, and go into that great big gaming universe with confidence.

The Lenovo Flex 2 Notebooks

If hardcore gaming is second on your list, but you still need the processing power of a high-end laptop (along with a hybrid look and feel), then the Lenovo Flex 2 series should be the way to go. The big move last year to force laptops into a more tablet-like experience produced a lot of tablets that convert their style and design so they can be used in either laptop or tablet configurations. The Lenovo Flex 2 series meets you halfway—they can be used in traditional clam-shell mode, or you can flip the screen back into stand mode. The stand mode does not allow you to rest the screen on the keyboard, but it does give you a nice presentation base for the display.

Under the hood, the Flex 2 comes in two configurations. The Flex 2 59418275 Convertible 14" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer is available in silver, and houses a 4th-generation 2.0 GHz Intel Core i7-4510U processor with a 4MB cache. This dual-core processor can be ramped to 3.1 GHz with Turbo Boost, and is supported with 8GB of DDR3L RAM.

The graphics are presented on a 14" LED-backlit IPS touchscreen display with Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution for excellent visuals. Although not equipped with a dedicated graphics card, the integrated Intel HD 4400 GPU is capable of handling some games on moderate settings. This laptop is also capable of WiDi streaming with other compatible devices. Share your movies, music, and photos with others without the cord clutter.

Storage comprises a 256GB solid-state drive for the fastest, quietest, and least heat-inducing operation. There’s even an SD card slot for adding more storage. Networking is configured with powerful 802.11ac and Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps). There’s also Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting all your Bluetooth devices.

Throw in a 720p video webcam, integrated mic, and stereo speakers featuring Dolby Advanced Audio v2 technology, along with USB 3.0 and HDMI connectivity, and you have a powerful laptop with a fun form factor that can help you with presentations or multimedia viewing.

Additionally available is the Lenovo Flex 2 59418264 Convertible 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer, in black. This laptop mirrors the 14" version in every way, with a few notable differences. The same processor is housed, the same cache, and the same RAM load-out. The screen is the same capacitive 10-point multi-touch as its little brother and even sports the same Full HD resolution—1920 x 1080. You can also position the screen in Stand Mode or leave it as a traditional clamshell.

But the 15" version does step back on wireless connectivity, only reaching as high as 802.11 b/g/n, with a 100/1000 Mbps Ethernet jack, but it still includes Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, along with a USB 3.0 and HDMI port. The hard drive is not the super-speedy solid-state drive, but instead a traditional 1TB spindle hard drive—the trade-off is more space for higher heat production and a little more weight. It does have another item that is becoming somewhat of an anomaly these days—an integrated SuperMulti DVD burner—which will also add to the weight. It still carries an SD card slot for additional storage.

Both are configured with Windows 8.1, which will bring the best out of the multi-touch screens, and help to organize your files. Easy access to the Microsoft Windows for the latest apps, games, and productivity software is also one of the pluses of Windows 8.1.

The Lenovo G50

Another entry into the Lenovo 15.6" laptop lineup includes the Lenovo G50 80E3005NUS Notebook Computer. Featuring a 2.0 GHz quad core A8-6410 AMD processor, this budget laptop is perfect for web browsing, word processing, or general tasks that may not require an extra special graphics option or high-end processing. It does include a healthy 6GB of DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM load-out, with a maximum of 8GB allowed for those who want to add more.

With an HD 16:9 aspect ratio, 1366 x 768 resolution, a 15.6" LED backlit display, and integrated AMD Radeon R5 graphics, this model isn’t pushing graphics to the limit, and if you have aspirations of great gaming sessions, you should probably stow those for a while. Instead, you have perfectly adequate graphics for almost anything else, including watching movies, browsing the web, or reading e-books.

With two USB 3.0, one HDMI, one VGA, and one USB 2.0 port, adding peripherals should be no problem. One of those won’t be an external DVD burner—this laptop includes an integrated SuperMulti DVD Burner optical drive for your entertainment needs. It also sports an SD card for optional storage solutions.

The networking is standard. It includes 802.11 b/g/n wireless capabilities and a hardwired RJ-45 jack that puts out 10/100 Mbps speed. It does have Bluetooth 4.0, a built-in 0.3 MP webcam microphone, and speakers. This is also configured with Windows 8.1.

Lenovo always provides consumers with a range of computers that fit almost every need. Even with this small sampling, you can see that the company offers high-end gaming laptops, professional models, and fun, easy-to-use devices for every lifestyle. Pick your Lenovo and go wherever you want.
