Fujitsu LIFEBOOK is Serious Computing

Share

Buying a laptop isn’t always about its entertainment features. A large number of laptop sales are for consumers who are looking for productivity, not prima donnas, in their mobile setup. Although you should always look for solid fundamentals in a laptop—processor speed, RAM size, screen clarity, and resolution—customers looking for a workstation replacement aren’t going to care so much about the little things like a high-res video camera or backlit keyboard. There are a few manufacturers who take the business end of laptop usage seriously. Fujitsu is definitely one of them.

The Fujitsu LIFEBOOK E series, featuring the 14" E544 and the 15.6" E554 notebooks, are serious laptops. They both feature identical specs (with the exception of screen size, of course), starting with a powerful dual-core 4th-Generation 2.6 GHz Intel® Core™ i5-4210M processor supporting Intel Turbo Boost Technology. This is a Haswell processor, so it takes on the double duty of extending battery life while keeping the heat down inside the chassis. The processor sports a 3MB cache, can be over-clocked to 3.2 GHz, and is supported by 4GB of DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM, which is placed in a single slot. The extra slot is open for RAM expansion of up to 16GB maximum.

There is no dedicated graphics card, but this isn’t a gamers’ laptop, so business-oriented users will find the integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics more than suitable. You’ll be viewing the graphics on either 14" or 15.6" widescreen HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1366 x 768. Not a graphic superstar, but again, for most web browsing, accounting and word processing, this is all the resolution you need.

Wrapping all of that up is a 500GB hybrid hard drive with an 8GB SSD cache. Hybrid hard drives are becoming more and more popular – you get the capacity of a traditional spindle hard drive and the ease and speed of an SSD. The 8GB cache should be perfect for starting up and flying through critical applications, like your operating system.

Other extras that are standards on other laptops are slightly enhanced here. There are three USB ports, with one functioning as a USB Anytime Charge port. This port allows you to charge an external device through the port even if the laptop is turned off (note: this feature is turned off when the laptop ships, and needs to be enabled through an installed program). There’s also an integrated SmartCard reader; SCRs allows you to store passwords and other confidential information on a small plastic card and are widely used in employee badges in large corporations and government institutions such as the Department of Defense. They can also be used with the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and the biometric fingerprint sensor, for enhanced security. Other ports include VGA, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, stereo headphone and stereo microphone inputs, and a docking connector. For even more storage, each unit comes with an integrated Dual-Layer Super Multi-Format DVD Writer and an SD card slot.

For connectivity, the unit includes an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 card that supports 802.11AC and Bluetooth 4.0. The higher-end Wi-Fi adds some serious chops to this business-model laptop. It also includes a built-in 720p HD web camera with dual microphones integrated into the screen’s top bezel, perfect for teleconferencing when your team is scattered to the four winds. Another nice touch is the full-size, spill-resistant keyboard with a 10-key touchpad.

The laptop comes with a host of other security features, further cementing the fact that this is not a gadget on which to play Angry Birds. Besides the aforementioned TPM 1.2 authentication (which disables unauthorized access to the laptop in your network), the biometric fingerprint sensor and integrated Computrace BIOS tracking software help monitor usage and recover the laptop in case of theft. You can also use your administration rights to enable two-level BIOS and HDD password protection.

The battery life is as serious as the configuration. The 6-cell 63W lithium-ion battery is rated up to 9 hours and 40 minutes (your individual consumption may vary based on a great number of factors). There’s also an optional high-capacity battery that will give you 11 hours and 30 minutes of run time—again, your experience may vary.

Speaking of options, the one option you may want to consider is the port replicator. Sold separately from the main unit, the port replicator allows up to three displays for your laptop, ideal for that big conference-room presentation.

The LIFEBOOK E series laptops are configured with the Windows 7 Professional 64-bit operating system, still one of the most popular Windows operating systems. If you’re thinking of overhauling your OS, however, they also include a Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit Recovery media in the box. Other software includes a mix of business and personal productivity suites, including a Microsoft Office 2013 trial, McAfee trial, Adobe Reader, a list of Fujitsu specific add-on utilities, and more.

When looking for a desktop replacement, you’ll be guided by need, and if you need processing power, stable graphics, and reliable data security options, then the LIFEBOOK E544/LIFEBOOK E554 can lock all of that down for you. When it’s time to get serious, this is the laptop that gets serious work done.
