Review of the Western Digital 2TB My Passport Portable Hard Drive

The Western Digital 2TB My Passport is a compact and portable hard drive that features USB 3.0 connectivity for fast data transfer and bus powering, which means that it doesn’t require a separate power cable in order to operate. It’s compatible with Mac and PC computers (reformatting is required for use with a Mac), and its USB 3.0 jack is backward compatible with any USB 2.0 port. The 2TB My Passport only weighs half a pound (0.23 kg), and it’s built durably to withstand the knocks and bumps of daily life. In essence, it’s a very small device that offers a vast amount of storage space and one of the fastest data transfer ports available. If you need extra storage to handle your digital photos, music, videos and any other personal or business related documents and data, this unassuming little hard drive is a really compelling option.

If you take a look at other portable 2TB hard drives on the market, you won’t find anything as small and lightweight as the Western Digital 2TB My Passport. External storage devices have become commonplace in today’s world, but if you take a moment to consider what the 2TB My Passport is, it’s really quite amazing. Not only can you leave the house with your entire music collection in your pocket, you can travel with your entire media library and document archive. It offers 2000 gigabytes of mobile storage space, which translates into 400,000 3.5MB photo files, 150 hours of digital video footage or a half million 128 kbps MP3 files. Not bad for a drive that’s around the size and weight of a tin of breath mints.

Security and backup software are included with the Western Digital 2TB My Passport drive. PC users are provided with three software applications: WD Drive Utilities, WD Security and SmartWare. Mac users are provided with WD Drive Utilities and WD Security (SmartWare isn’t supported on Mac with this drive). If you choose to use any of these applications, they must be installed on your computer. You may also choose to ignore the included software altogether, and just use the My Passport drive any way you please. The included SmartWare backup software continuously makes copies of your files automatically, the WD Security software features password protection and data encryption, and WD Drive Utilities enables you to run diagnostic tests on your drive.

A USB cable is included with the purchase of a 2TB My Passport drive, and the cable is compatible with both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

I spent $100 for my passport and within 6 months it stopped working. It made funny repeating sounds and it did not register at all on my pc. I then found the same problem reported online for this external hard drive.

I think You have some HEAD troubles. I had the same problem after 5 years of heavy use on my 1TB MyPassport. It coast me around 1000USd to recover all the data.

for buisness....

The Nomad case is not compatible with the 2TB drive.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have removed the Nomad case from the article. We look forward to your continued participation on InDepth.

When connecting to disk by USB 3.0 cable to Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop, the files is not showing when open & in properties option showing saved data of around 500 GB. Please give the solution.
