Which ASUS Monitor is Right for You?

Share

So, you’ve finally bought or built the desktop computer tower you’ve wanted. It’s got the processor with the speed you need, the graphics card that cost you a pretty penny, a large amount of RAM and hard drive storage space as well all the ports you need. Unfortunately, you’re not done yet. Aside from the general peripherals you’ll need, such as a keyboard and mouse, possibly some speakers, you’re going to have to purchase one other important item: the monitor.

Picking the right monitor is all about knowing your needs. Screen size, panel type, viewing angles, maximum resolution, refresh rates, color reproduction, interface ports and type of screen coating (glossy/matte) all come into play. A professional photographer or photo editor may opt for a large 27” widescreen IPS monitor with a matte finish and sRGB color support. A gamer may go a different route and opt for a 24” monitor with a high refresh rate. Someone who is tight on space may require an ultrathin monitor with a small desk footprint. Luckily for you, ASUS has a variety of monitors geared toward different consumers, so read on to find out if one of them is right for you.

ProArt Series

The ASUS ProArt Series monitors were designed for professionals who require wide viewing angles, high resolutions, wider color gamuts and true-to-life color accuracy. The ProArt Series features QuickFit Virtual Scale. QuickFit Virtual Scale allows you to preview photos and documents on-screen, in their actual size, prior to printing. QuickFit Virtual Scale is activated via a monitor hot key and serves as a useful guide to accurately view and edit photos in their native size. All monitors of the ProArt Series come with a Zero Bright Dot Warranty, which is an additional service on top of ASUS’s standard 3-year monitor warranty. If your select display has even one single bright dot or a dead pixel, ASUS may repair or replace the unit.

The ASUS PB238Q 23” IPS monitor features an in-plane ASUS PB238Q 23” IPS Monitorswitching (IPS) panel to achieve 178°/178° wide viewing angles, which reduces color shift on your screen. The 23” screen supports up to 16.7 million colors, has a 6 ms response time and a brightness of 250 nits. With a 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution, the PB238Q can achieve an 80,000,000:1 ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio (dynamic) for vibrant color and deep black levels. For connectivity, you can either use the traditional DVI-D port or opt for the multimedia-friendly HDMI port. There’s a DisplayPort for Mac users as well as a VGA port if you prefer an analog video signal. There are also four USB ports, so you’ll be able to use them as extra ports to connect the PB238Q to peripherals such as USB flash drives, keyboards, mice, digital cameras and more. There are also hidden stereo speakers built into the monitor to provide audio.

ASUS PA248Q 24” IPS MonitorThe ASUS PA248Q 24.1” IPS monitor features the same in-plane switching (IPS) panel as the PB238Q withthe 178°/178° viewing angles. It also supports 16.7 million colors, has a 6 ms response time and a brightness of 300 nits. However, the PA248Q has a larger 1920 x 1200 maximum resolution and a 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio, thanks to its 24.1” screen. The extra 120 vertical pixels may benefit photo editors and photographers who need an extra toolbar or want just a little more screen real estate. All the ports on the PA238Q are also available on the PA248Q, except that the four USB ports are all the faster 3.0. The key difference between an ASUS PA series and the ASUS PB series is that all ASUS PA monitors are factory-calibrated for color accuracy, to ensure precise color input and accurate color fidelity.

The ASUS PA246Q 24.1” P-IPS monitor may seem similar to the PA248Q,ASUS PA246Q 24.1” P-IPS Monitor but they’re actually quite different (and we’re not talking about the extra 0.1” of screen size.) The PA246Q features a P-IPS panel with 178°/178° viewing angles, 6 ms response time, a 1920 x 1200 maximum resolution, and a brightness of 400 nits. The P-IPS panel of PA246Q has 10-bit color depth, which is a 1.07 billion color palette, as opposed to the 8-bit color depth with a 16.7 million color palette of the PA248Q. The 1.07 billion color palette provides 98% of Adobe RGB coverage, and there’s even a 12-bit look-up table for a greater depth for each RGB color, resulting in smooth gradation and accurate color reproduction. The PA246Q is for professionals looking for a wider color gamut.

Lastly, the ASUS PB278Q 27” IPS monitor is the largest of the group with a 27" screASUS PB278Q 27” IPS Monitor en. The display features a plane-line switching (PLS) panel that provides 178°/178° wide viewing angles, a 5 ms response time and a brightness of 300 nits. The screen has a Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) display, which results in 77% more screen real estate than a Full HD 1080p monitor. That’s because the PB278Q has a 2560 x 1440 maximum resolution. The larger screen and higher resolution allow for more windows to be open on the PB278Q than other smaller monitors. This allows you to multitask and stay productive while also allowing you to enjoy high-resolution gaming and multimedia. The PB278Q also has two hidden 3W speakers that produce stereo sound.

Ultra-Slim Designo MX Series

The ASUS Designo MX Series features monitors with ultra-slim profiles and edge-to-edge glass. Visually stunning in both appearance and performance, the ASUS Designo MX Series provide an ergonomic design, a stylish look and high resolutions.

The ASUS MX239H Designo MX Series 23” monitor is just 14.5mm (0.57") at its thinnest point. This allows you to place the MX239H on your desk without taking up too much space. Also, the MX239H features an edge-to-edge frameless screen for modern style as well as ideal multi-display setups. While the bezel located on the bottom of the monitor houses the tactile buttons, the side and top bezels have a thickness of just 0.8mm. Don’t let the ultra-slim design fool you, the MX239H still remembers that it’s a monitor. Housing an IPS panel on a 23” screen, the MX239H has 178°/178° wide viewing angles for minimal color shift when viewing the display from an angle. The screen also has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD 1080p resolution, which allows you to view 1080p HD content without having to upscale the quality. With an 80,000,000:1 ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio (dynamic), 5 ms response time and a brightness of 250 nits, the MX239H augments display contrast and sharpness by adjusting backlighting luminance to achieve the deep black levels and bright whites.

If you require a larger screen, the ASUS MX279H 27” Designo MX Series 27” monitor may be for you. Since a 27” monitor is quite large and you may sit relatively the same distance from a 27” screen as a 23” screen, it’s important that it has an IPS panel for 178°/178° wide viewing angles. This ensures that the edges of the screen don’t shift color, and that color doesn't look washed out, as some Twisted Nematic (TN) monitors may. The MX279H also has a 16:9 aspect ratio, Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 5 ms response time and brightness of 250 nits. The MX279H also has an 80,000,000:1 ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio (dynamic) and a 5 ms response time.

Both the MX239H and the MX279H monitors feature Splendid Video technology, which provides a variety of viewing modes, such as sRGB, Scenery, Theater, Standard, Night View and Game modes. Along with preset modes, the MX279H also includes three skin-tone modes and four color temperature modes for even more customization options to suit your needs. Both monitors also have the QuickFit Virtual Scale feature, which allows you to preview photos and documents on-screen in their actual size prior to printing, which serves as a useful guide to accurately viewing and editing photos in their native size. Both MX239H and MX279H feature the Bang & Olufsen ICEpower audio amplifier chip, 3-watt stereo speakers and ASUS SonicMaster technology that ensures authentic sound reproduction, thanks to fine tuning by the ASUS Golden Ear team. For ports, both the MX239H and MX279H have dual HDMI ports and a D-Sub (VGA) port. DVI-D is also supported via an HDMI-to-DVI cable. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack. The MX Series is designed for people looking for a stylish display without sacrificing performance.

VG Gaming Series

The ASUS VG Gaming Series focuses on high refresh rates and response times to keep up with the fast-paced action of PC games. PC gamers will also be able to utilize the 3D mode of newer games as well, to get the fully immersive experience.

The ASUS VG278H 27” 3D-Ready monitor features a Full HD 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The 27” screen also has an impressive 2 ms response time as well as a fast 120 Hz refresh rate, which shines during high-paced, GPU-intensive PC games, such as first-person shooters. The display features a DVI-D port, an HDMI port and a VGA port so you can have your pick of which connector you would like to use. There are also built-in stereo speakers for when you want to take a break from your gaming headset. The VG278H is also 3D ready, letting you use the included nVIDIA 3D Vision Kit 2 to take part in a true Full HD 3D PC gaming experience. Please note that in order to experience 3D, you will need a system that contains a graphics card capable of playing 3D content.

The ASUS VG278HE 27” 3D-Ready monitor is similar to the VG278H with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and a 2 ms response time. However, the VG278HE has a 144 Hz rapid refresh rate for smooth motion scenes and minimal ghosting. The VG278HE is also 3D ready, although you will have to purchase the nVIDIA 3D Vision Kit separately if you want to take advantage of it. Also, please note that although the VG278HE has a 144 Hz rapid refresh rate for normal 2D gaming, it can only achieve 120 Hz (60 Hz per eye) in 3D mode.

Both the VG278H and the VG278HE have nVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology, which bumps the brightness up twice that of conventional 3D technology in 3D mode with no increase to total energy consumption. This allows for uniform black levels and color accuracy. Please note that the VG278HE supports nVIDIA 3D Vision 2 through the connection of a Dual-link DVI.

A 27” monitor is great for gamers who want an immersive gaming experience or need extra real estate for onscreen buttons, such as those found in MMORPGs. However, a A 27” monitor might actually be too large for other types of games, such as first-person shooters (FPS). FPS gamers, who require the entire screen in their point of view, may prefer a smaller monitor . They would have to turn their heads to see the edges of the screen on a 27” monitor. A 24" monitor is arguably the best size for a player of first-person shooters.

Luckily, ASUS offers one in the form of the ASUS VG248QE 24” LED-Backlit monitor. The VG248QE features Full HD 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio and a brightness of 350 nits. It also has an impressive 1 ms response time and a 144 Hz refresh rate to keep up with the action-packed frames per second of first-person shooters. The high refresh rate and low response time minimizes ghosting so you can focus on the game itself without getting distracted. The VG248QE forgoes 3D technology in favor of rapid refresh rates and slow response times. Similar to the VG278HE, the VG248QE is also 3D ready, but you will have to purchase the NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit separately if you want to take advantage of this feature.

All three models have nVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology, which bumps the brightness up to twice that of conventional 3D monitors. The bump in brightness doesn't require an increase of total energy consumption. This allows for uniform black levels and color accuracy. Please note that the VG278HE and VG248QE support nVIDIA 3D Vision 2 through the connection of a Dual-link DVI cable. The VG278H has a built-in IR receiver and a free pair of  nVIDIA 3D Vision 2 glasses.

Glossy or Matte???
Photo/Video editors need to know this info, yet is woefully missing on most B&H product pages and reviews. Please take more time to include this information on your monitor (and laptop) product pages. It's critical information to your professional customers!

Understood that you have to initially rely on manufacturer provided information until they arrive into store stock. However, this is why I purchase products from B&H because they often list product specifications above and beyond what I can find from the manufacturers. B&H has the benefit of having actual products in house where a monitor/laptop screen's finish can be examined and reported to the website. That's what I'm hoping to see more of, just like a B&H employee would do if I stopped into the NYC store.
Thanks!

Greetings,
Does any of the Ultra-Slim Designo MX Series display 100 percent of the AdobeRGB 1998 spec.
Or if not, how high is the percentage?

Can't find this information anywhere on the net.

***** again.
Another weird question:

I have problem finding out important specs since trying to decide which of the ASUS monitors to buy.

1. The ASUS PA238Q shows 100 % sRGB according to your webpage. (even though tests have shown it to be 94%)
What is the percentage of the Asus MX239H in regards to sRGB? Is it also a wide gamut panel ? if not, what is the percentage?

Question 2.

In regards to grayscale accuracy and tracking, What is the Delta-E value for the Asus MX239H ?

I find out the specs for some of your competitiors while checking out the 27 inch screen of the same model but would really like to have the 23" if it is good enough. My ASUS laptop has an IPS screen and I would like the ASUS MX since there is new IPS technology on the MX239H and I would like these to make a smart choicein deciding if it is better or worse than the PA model.
Thanks

It's funny that Asus boasts the 27" 2560X1440 monitor as 109 lines (pixels)/inch, whereas none is offered for the 24.1 inch 1920X1200. Is it not just as good? Why not give us the comparative Lpi?

I am confused about Asus VX & MX Series, which is better ? VX Series is new and has Vivid Pixel Technology but people are suggesting to go for MX because of better Panel Quality, is it True ? Which one is better ?

Both are going to give you very similar image quality.  The VX is slightly lighter and has a different layout for the buttons.

I purchased an ASUS PV248Q monitor to hook up to my Sony video camera, an HXR-NX5P, which I output on 1080.

However, when I connect and turn it on, I can only get the message 'VGA No signal'. I cannot access any other buttons, nothing else works. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Ian-

I can find no reference for the ASUS PV248Q you have listed.  Disconnect the camera and try to manually set the monitor's resolution for 1080 or the highest setting available.  Also check your HDMI cable.

Please contact ASUS for troubleshooting your monitor as well:
