Flash memory camcorders are the way to go these days. Flash memory is fast, rugged, portable and affordable. Canon just announced the VIXIA HF M32 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder. This little HD beauty features 64GB of internal flash memory and an SD card slot lets you expand on that.

The VIXIA HF M32 features a 15x zoom lens and 3.89-megapixel full-HD CMOS image sensor. It captures HD video at 1920 x 1080 resolution and records at 24Mbps, which is the highest bit rate available in the AVCHD format. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, the camera can also offers 24p and 30p frame modes. To complement the HD video, the camera can record 5.1-channel Surround Sound, but you’ll need Canon’s optional SM-V1 5.1-Channel Surround Sound Microphone in order to do so.

The VIXIA HF M32’s 64GB of internal memory is enough to store up to 24 hours of high-definition video. When the internal memory is full, the camera automatically switches recording to whatever’s in the SD memory-card slot. The camera is compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.

Flash memory has many advantages. One is that it allows a very fast response time, as the camera doesn't have to waste time waiting for a hard drive or tape to position itself. Flash memory also consumes very little power, so the camcorder’s battery will last longer. Flash memory is also more resistant to bumps and jolts than hard drives.

To help capture smooth, jitter-free video, the VIXIA HF M32 features Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range. That, combined with Powered IS, eliminates the shake associated with hand movement at the telephoto end of the zoom range.

The VIXIA HF M32 features an Instant AF focusing system that uses an external sensor to help speed up focusing, even in low-light conditions. A Focus Assist function shows you a 2x magnification of your subject while focusing, and automatically cancels the magnification when you start recording.

A 2.7-inch touch panel LCD reveals plenty of detail with its 211,000-dot resolution, and touch control lets the user interact with the camera in many convenient ways. A feature called Touch & Track maintains sharp focus and precise exposure for any subject that you touch on the screen, even if the subject moves during the shot. Touch Focus lets you pinpoint a specific area to focus on, even if the camera doesn’t want lock onto that spot on its own. Touch Exposure lets you lock or compensate the exposure for any area that you touch. Face Detection technology allows up to 35 faces to be tracked automatically, maintaining proper focus and exposure.

In addition to video, the VIXIA HF M32 can capture 3.3-megapixel still images, and you can capture stills even while shooting video. The camera can capture up to five still images per second. You can even capture stills from previously recorded video. All you have to do is play the video in the camcorder and press the photo button to capture any scene you like at 1920 x 1080 resolution. You can capture up to 30 still images from just one second of video. Advanced photographers will appreciate the VIXIA HF M32’s histogram display, which lets you to see the brightness information of still images.

You need not worry about shooting in low-light conditions. The VIXIA HF M32 features a built-in flash and a built-in video light. If you want to burn DVDs of your video, you can do so easily with Canon's DW-100 DVD Burner, sold separately. A single cable connects the camera to the DVD burner, and the click of a few buttons creates an AVCHD disc that will play in compatible DVD players.

The VIXIA HF M32 isn’t shipping until September. But if you click the little “Notify When In Stock” button on the product page, B&H will let you know when it’s in stock.
