Unveiled: Fujifilm Expands the X-Series with the X-A1 and XC 50-230mm Telephoto Zoom Lens

Fujifilm has just announced a new and especially unique member of its line of X-series mirrorless digital cameras: the X-A1. This camera stands out among the X-M1, X-E1, and X-Pro1 as the first to feature a traditional Bayer filter arrangement CMOS sensor, versus their proprietary X-Trans CMOS sensor, and also features an intuitive handling and control interface that is complemented by built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. Fujifilm has also announced a new telephoto zoom lens, the second in their XC lens line-up: the XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS lens.

Fujifilm X-A1 Mirrorless Digital Camera

The X-A1 is a compact, lightweight digital camera that features a 16.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and EXR Processor II to produce high-resolution, well-detailed imagery with notable extended sensitivity to ISO 25600. This sensor strays from past interchangeable-lens X-series cameras in that it uses a traditional Bayer filter array, opposed to the X-Trans CMOS sensor that has been adopted by Fujifilm since the X-Pro1. While the difference in imaging results may be minute, the Bayer array affords a broader range of RAW image-processing opportunities than their proprietary design. The combination of this sensor and the EXR Processor II also affords support for recording full HD 1080p video at 30 fps with stereo sound, as well as quickened performance throughout the camera system, including a start-up time of 0.5 seconds, shutter-lag time of 0.05 seconds, shooting-interval time of 0.7 seconds, and a maximum continuous shooting rate of 5.6 fps for up to 30 consecutive frames.

The imaging benefits of the X-A1 are housed within a distinctly styled, textured body that is available in either black or indigo blue. The small form factor of the camera, however, does not limit its interface design that incorporates a range of physical controls and dials for selecting different shooting modes and camera settings. A mode dial gives direct access to switching between manual and automated shooting modes and the Q Menu (Quick Menu) shortcut button provides instant access for adjusting some of the most oft-used camera and exposure settings. A hot shoe is incorporated into the camera's design to support the use of external flashes or other shoe-mounted accessories and a built-in pop-up flash with a guide number of 23' at ISO 200 can also be employed in low-light situations. Facilitating viewing from both high and low angles, a large, tilting 3.0-inch 920k-dot LCD monitor is available for live-view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation.

Expediting the sharing of photos and videos, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows the X-A1 to be paired with iOS or Android mobile devices using the free Fujifilm Camera app for instant transferring of imagery. The app provides an intuitive means for browsing the contents of the camera from the mobile device and selecting up to 30 images at a time or HD 720p videos to be sent to the smartphone or tablet for sharing online.

For creatively enhancing the look and feel of imagery in-camera, a range of Film Simulation modes and Advanced Filters are available to adjust the appearance of both photos and videos. Film Simulation modes are based on Fujifilm's rich history of traditional film-based photography and serve to alter the color, tonality, and contrast characteristics of imagery to emulate their Provia, Velvia, and Astia film types. Eight Advanced Filters are also available, ranging from High-Key and Low-Key settings to Soft Focus and Toy Camera looks. For automatically optimizing the appearance of imagery, the Advanced SR Auto function works to intelligently recognize the scene being photographed and adjust exposure settings to clearly depict the specific shooting situation.

To suit the all-around performance of the X-A1, the XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS lens is included with the camera and provides a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-76mm. This standard zoom lens covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives and incorporates optical image stabilization and a high-precision stepping AF motor. Three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element are integrated into the optical design in order to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to high overall image sharpness. A Super EBC (Electron Beam Coating) has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Fujifilm XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS Lens

Complementing the included 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens with the XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS Lens, available in black or silver, is an expansive telephoto zoom lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 76-350mm. This lens's extensive reach covers portrait-length to telephoto perspectives and is especially well suited to working with distant subjects. At such long focal lengths, optical image stabilization helps to produce sharper imagery by countering the effects of camera shake, and a high-speed precision stepping AF motor provides sound focusing capabilities that pair well with moving subjects and video applications. One aspherical element and one extra-low dispersion element are incorporated in the lens's design to minimize aberrations and distortions and a Super EBC coating has also been applied to the glass elements to enhance image contrast and clarity.
