My Book External Drive Caters to Mac Users

Mac users pride themselves on style. After all, Mac notebooks and desktops are the most stylish-looking computers in the universe. Western Digital’s new My Book Studio LX is designed to complement the appearance of Mac computers and it offers many innovative features. Of course, it’s also compatible with PCs.

Western Digital’s My Book Studio LX is a desktop hard drive with an all-metal enclosure that looks great when placed next to any aluminum Mac computer. The drive is preformatted with the HFS+ file system, so it’s plug-and-play ready for Mac users. The drive is compatible with Apple Time Machine so it makes a perfect external backup drive for Mac computers. Mac users will appreciate the two high-performance FireWire-800 interfaces, and the drive also includes a USB 2.0 interface for universal compatibility with other computers. After reformatting, the drive is compatible with Windows.

The My Book Studio LX features a unique LCD screen that can be customized with a personalized drive label so you, and others, will always know what's stored on the drive. Western Digital’s SmartWare software lets you customize the label to display critical information about the drive, such as the contents, security status and remaining capacity. The display is visible even when the drive is not plugged in, making the My Book Studio LX an ideal medium for archiving critical data.

The SmartWare software suite includes an automatic backup application that uses a visual interface to indicate the progress of the data being backed up. You can customize backups to select specific files and directories or back up entire systems with ease. If you feel it’s necessary, you can protect the data from unauthorized access or theft with password protection and 256-bit hardware-based encryption.

The My Book Studio LX measures 1.9 x 6.8 x 5.3 inches and it weighs 2.6 pounds. A 1TB version costs $159.00, but an even better deal gets you a 2TB version for only $199.00. That’s double the capacity for only $40 more. What a bargain!

LaCie now also caters to Mac users.

I have bought LaCie rugged external drives for years. As a PC user I was very upset that the last LaCie drive I bought was not only formatted for Mac, but took over 24 hours to reformat for a PC.

So if you are a PC user make sure to read the box closely before you buy your next external drive.

This is what I've been waiting for!! I'll make sure I get one to go along with my other My Book External drive. It's getting low on space.

I bought a Studio LX 2 TB HD about three months ago, began using it, and 3 weeks in, it would no longer mount on any computer.  I tried Mac and PC, nothing.  I took it the the Geek Squad at Best Buy and they hooked it up to a Data Mule, and they couldn't access my data.  In the end, I found a guy who was able to access the drive on a Linux OS, and I was able to get back most of what was on there, but not all.  It cost me $130 to restore my data, and as soon as I had it, I returned Western Digital and bought a Seagate.
