ikan VideoForge 4K SDI/HDMI Video Test Pattern Generator

Share

ikan introduces the VideoForge 4K test pattern generator, aimed at professionals who need 4K test patterns to calibrate their 4K display equipment. The generator features an HDMI output and four mini BNC connectors that provide Single, Dual, and Quad HD output. It generates and outputs test signals in SD, HD, 2K, and Quad HD. The HDMI output supports SD and HD up to 1080p 60 at 30 to 36 bits per pixel.

As we enter the age of 4K origination and distribution, having accurate tools to calibrate displays becomes increasingly important. With today’s cameras able to capture 12 and 13 stops of dynamic range, an inaccurate or poorly calibrated monitor can cause problems both on the set and later, in post production.  These problems can be further compounded by the variation in available monitors' colorimetry, bit depth, and whether they are set up incorrectly. A true 4K signal generator can help calibrate monitors so that everyone in production knows just what they are capturing on set.

The Videoforge 4K doesn't just playback pre-made images and files. It generates its own test signals, rendering RGB triplet patterns, so you have precise and clean test patterns for evaluating and calibrating your monitors, and not using a jpeg. This makes modifying your test patterns a much simpler process, and has the advantage of avoiding generation or re-encoding loss when you modify the pattern. The VideoForge 4K also supports 3D Color Cube Calibration, which is an improvement on the traditional Color Management Systems in that the 3 Dimensional Color Cube Calibration represents Hue and Saturation values as well as Luminance values, which traditional 1 Dimensional Color Calibration systems do not. Additionally, the 3D Color Cube Calibration supports offer far more data points than 1D systems, allowing you to more accurately calibrate your monitors.

The VideoForge 4K is ready to use, out of the box. It runs on 12 volts DC, so you can take it on location and power it with a battery if necessary. It features 16 different user-adjustable parameters that can generate thousands of different test-pattern signals. The built-in USB ports allow the generator to display a .png or JPEG graphic directly from a USB flash drive. Control of the unit is currently by IP address over Ethernet, using a web-based interface. However, planned firmware updates will enable RS-232 control via the built-in RS-232 control port, and Wi-Fi connectivity and control. It is also compatible with and can be controlled by optional CalMAN calibration software. The unit comes with a USB wireless adapter that plugs into the front left USB port, in anticipation of the firmware update.

Beyond checking and calibrating your monitors’ function, the test signals can be used to test your entire signal path, from production through post and even distribution. Take the test signals throughout your planned processes—compress/decompress, edit, color correct, compress for distribution, and A/B the finished signal to the live signal from the VideoForge. It's a great way to check the integrity of your facility or your post and distribution process. It's portable, so you can bring it to different facilities and not have to worry about setting it up in a rack to use. Plus, it outputs almost any format and frame rate you may need, from SD-NTSC and PAL, 1080p including 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94. 60, and 2K and 4K at 23.98, 24, 25. All these capabilities are packed into a unit that measures 9.5 x 7.75 x 3 inches and weighs only 6.5 pounds, which make this a powerful tool that you can easily pack into a shoulder bag or medium-sized case, and take with you on your next production.

I don't see it listed, but will this do 4K@60?
