ASUS Announces Sharp-Shooting Smartphone: The ZenFone Zoom

ASUS has unveiled its latest iteration of the ZenFone, the aptly named ZenFone Zoom. Billed as the world’s thinnest smartphone with 3x optical zoom, the Zoom features an innovative periscopic mechanism that makes its 3x optical zoom capability and ultra-slim 12mm design possible.

Driving the Zoom’s impressive camera array is a 10-element HOYA lens arrangement. This combination of aspherical, prismatic, and extra-low-dispersion glass lenses was configured within the Zoom’s dual-periscope arrangement to maximize incoming light and make the 3x optical zoom possible. The lens arrangement also allows for up to 12x total magnification. Optical image stabilization, dual-LED flash, and a 0.03-second laser focus are all on board to ensure enhanced image clarity and quality.

Body design for the Zoom is a big plus and one of the primary reasons it’s such an impressive device. With a 5mm ultra-thin edge, the Zoom’s metallic unibody chassis completely belies the camera power it contains. This, again, is made possible by the Zoom’s innovative periscope lens mechanism. In addition to this breakthrough design, dedicated shutter and recording buttons and distinct zoom keys are built in to answer the demands of even the most serious of photographers. A leather rear cover protects the back of the device, providing added grip and a touch of luxury.

Despite its impressive camera specs, the Zoom promises to be more than just a DSLR-esque smartphone. Housing a 5.5" IPS capacitive display with 1920 x 1080 native resolution, the Zoom enables you to enjoy your optically enhanced shots (and other content) as they were meant to be seen—in Full HD. Beneath the Zoom’s hood is a flagship-worthy 2.3GHz Intel® Atom™ quad-core processor that’s backed by 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an ultra-fast 60 ms touch-response time.

Building upon the Android Lollipop operating system, ASUS equipped the ZenFone Zoom with its upgraded user interface, ZenUI. ZenUI features a number of camera-centric enhancements and applications to help you make the most of the Zoom’s photo-taking capabilities. In addition to its photo-friendly features, ZenUI also features more than 1,000 additions to the standard Android interface, including SnapView, Motion Gesture, and enhanced privacy modes.

Like earlier models of the ZenFone, the Zoom is equipped with a 3000mAh battery backed by ASUS’s BoostMaster Technology, which enables charging speeds of up to 60% in 39 minutes. Additional features include SonicMaster 2.0 technology for enhanced sound quality, a microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB for  additional storage options, GSM 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth, NFC, and much more. The ZenFone Zoom is available now/coming soon.
